The product of artistic research, montage, and reproduction processes, Michaela Melián's works involve a complex, transmedia layering of image, sound, and text. Red Threads, which is published in conjunction with the identically titled survey exhibition on Melián at the KINDL - Centre for Contemporary Art in Berlin, focuses on Tamara Bunke and follows the trajectory of her life as it switches between the GDR and South America. Starting from the guerrillera who went under the nom de guerre Tania, a network of "red threads" unfolds, leitmotifs that cover a wide range of themes that include canonization, the Neues Wohnen movement, political theatre, gender norms, and a sense of home. Melián's drawings, stamps, overlays, sewn pieces, weavings, and musical compositions provide unexpected contextualization for themes that are politically and socially volatile. Michaela Melián, b. 1956, is an artist and musician living in Upper Bavaria and Hamburg. She co-founded the band F.S.K. and has taught at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg (HfbK) since 2010.

Hailing from the cultural realm of India, the mandala signifies in its original sense a sacred circle. It serves as a meditation aidand at the same time reflects an ancient symbolism of strictly geometric basic forms accompanied by an interpretation of itssacred content. As an expression of the awareness of higher affinities, the symmetrically arranged geometry can be found ina variety of pictorial works and the architecture of various epochs and cultural realms, for example in medieval book illumination, the floor plan of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, in Kazimir Malevich's Black Square, or in various objects of the indigenous peoples of Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas. Based on these and other masterpieces from renowned museums andprivate collections and illustrated in fascinating photographs of unique buildings and rituals, this publication offers an impressivefirst analysis of the phenomenon of sacred geometry in art and architecture and their underlying ideologies.
Distinctive hand lettering is an essential skill for artists and designers. Deftly executed letter froms are a nearly forgotten art in an age of endless free fonts. Graffiti is one of the last reservoirs of highly refined, well practiced penmanship. The most reviled and persecuted form of Graffiti, the Tag, is seldom appresiated for the raw beauty of its skeletal letter forms. Most tags are removed immediately, and the casual viewer seldom has a chance to descern the difference between entry level and advanced hand styles. Within the pages of Flip the Script, author Christian Acker systematically analyzes the best graffiti writers from around the United States. Acker presents the lettering samples in a clean organized format, giving the material a proper formal treatment evoking classic typography books.

Cutting and sticking is really easy, anyone can do it and, with a few basic supplies, like paper, scissors and a bit of glue, you've got yourself a great kit to start working. Collage, conceived by Picasso and Braque at the beginning of the 20th century, and which the dadaists would incorporate later as an alternative, renegade response to traditional art, is a bit more than just cutting and sticking: it is experimentation, investigation, learning, and, a great deal of fun. If you inject some purpose or personal content into your clippings, you'll succeed in creating a language of your own which will allow you to express your worries or experiences visually. Collage will broaden our vision of the world, transforming and recycling images that already exist to create new ones with different meanings and new aesthetics, apart from the therapeutic, rewarding experience of the practice itself. This inventive activity art book, now in paperback, combines fun and focus, entertainment, and mindfulness. It includes a brief history of collage and practical tips and ideas to cut and paste, draw and paint, and sew and stitch using paper and everyday objects. Each double page proposes to look at things afresh, with suggestion and jumping off points to unleash the capacity for creativity and, ultimately, widen the horizons for expression. It includes 25 pages of cutouts. A whole world to discover!
