Ernst Ludwig Kirchner og Emil Nolde er hovedskikkelser i den tyske ekspressionistiske bevægelse. De vendte sig bort fra det europæiske samfund og de etablerede normer i tidens borgerlige kultur og søgte i stedet inspiration i mennesker, livsformer og genstande fra andre dele af verden, især Afrika og Oceanien. I denne bog undersøges Noldes og Kirchners kunst på baggrund af deres historiske og ideologiske kontekst. Her afdækkes forbindelser mellem værkerne og den racetænkning og undertrykkelse, som også er en del af europæisk historie. Roulette Russe udgiver nu tredje bog i rækken Malene Landgreen 2011-2022 – WORKS / IN SITU / ABOUT. Bogen indledes af et manifest, skrevet af Malene Landgreen. Gennem efterfølgende tekstbidrag af digter Naja Marie Aidt, direktør ved Kunsthal Aarhus Diana Baldon, arkitekt og forfatter Cort Ross Dinesen samt kunsthistoriker Ditte Vilstrup Holm, bringes læseren ind i Malene Landgreens facetterede og undersøgende univers. Et oeuvre der dækker over en bred vifte af udstillinger og udsmykninger. I en årrække har Landgreen skabt en række udsmykninger in situ for både offentlige institutioner og private virksomheder. Bogen indeholder blandt andet et katalog over udsmykningsopgaverne på Det Nye Rigshospital, Nyborg Gymnasium, Kunstmuseet Brandts og Københavns Hovedbibliotek o.m.a. Om kunstneren Billedkunstner Malene Landgreen er født i Danmark i 1962 og arbejder mellem København og Berlin. Hun er uddannet fra Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi i 1984-1991 og Academy of Fine Arts i Budapest, Ungarn i 1987-1988. Landgreen udforsker i sin praksis farvers og rums potentiale for værdisættelse. Hun går efter sit eget udsagn på opdagelse og i dialog med alt, hun møder på sin vej. Dette afspejler sig i særdeleshed også på lærredet, når Landgreen blander, sammensætter og kontraststiller farver. For Landgreen er farverne og formerne lærredets vokabular, der i kombination med hinanden er som bogstaver på papir. Det bliver til et sprog, der kan læses og sanses af beskueren.

At skabe med sin hobby giver et FRIRUM og livsenergi. Mit håb er at kreativiteten vil blomstre.

Charlie Prodger works across moving image, writing, sculpture, drawing and printmaking. Through the prism of queer subjectivity, her work explores intertwined relations between the body, landscape, language, technology and time. To accompany her exhibition and the presentation of the complete film trilogy-Stoneymollan Trail, BRIDGIT, and SaF05-a book with a substantial essay by Sarah Hayden is released in Secession's publication series. The London-based author and professor of literature and visual culture analyzes the significance of voice and voiceover in Prodger's video works. For the book, the artist has created a series of image pairings of production photos and video stills from the final part of the trilogy, SaF05.

The Anahuacalli Museum in Mexico City, a pyramid-shaped structure of volcanic stone, was intended to be the final mansion of Diego Rivera and his wife, Frida Kahlo. Today, it houses Rivera's vast collection of pre-Columbian art. Unlike typical museums, the building's galleries resemble religious or ceremonial chambers, and the corridors are dramatic and cavernous.In 2022, artist Robert Janitz (b. 1962 in Alsfeld, Germany), who had recently moved to Mexico City from New York, was invited to exhibit his work at Anahuacalli. This catalog documents this extraordinary dialogue between pre-Hispanic and contemporary aesthetics. As an outsider, Janitz was free to respond to what he found compelling at Anahuacalli: the colors, the textures, the visionary architecture. Throughout the museum's three floors, Janitz installed large-scale paintings on the walls, even the ceiling and floor, to amplify and distort Rivera's almost ubiquitous decorative program. His paintings of tubular structures, halfway between hieroglyphs and shapes, were spotlit against the heavy, dark stone walls, giving them a jewel-like luminosity and creating an almost metaphysical and spiritual experience. Conceptually and chromatically, Anahuacalli seemed the perfect home for Janitz's extravagantly colored silhouettes.

Again and again, the artist finds impressive images representing time - both its progress as well as its relative nature. For Kunsthalle Nürnberg, Alex Müller has developed an exhibition that combines biographical allusions, cultural and art historical references. In eight chapters, the exhibition takes us on a journey through the artist's universe.Numerous everyday objects become charged with a specific meaning in Alex Müller's oeuvre. Any material can become an artistic material in her work. The artist underlines the open narratives of her art by cleverly playing with the boundaries of painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, film, sound, and performance.Stories are hinted at, but never fully told. Koestler, Roy Sieber, Dennis William Stevenson, Mark T. Wypyski, and Peter J. Zanzucchi. The text begins with a thorough exploration of the ethnological and art historical evidence for the Serpent masquerade among the Baga of Guinea, bearing an immense wooden serpent figure on top of the head representing a python. Never witnessed or photographed by an outsider, it disappeared in the 1950s along with most ritual performance after an Islamic jihad instated strict prohibitions against indigenous religions. The ritual context is followed by an in-depth analysis of the Serpent masquerade figures now extant in collections in Europe, the Americas, and Africa, as well as other representations of the python in the ritual art of the region. The final sections present the arguments, as a debate, between interested persons in the arts, including art historians, dealers, appraisers, collectors, and curators, and the scientific examinations by specialists in botany, chemistry, physics, entomology, and conservation concerning one particular Serpent figure in question.

Nachvollzogen werden nicht nur Produktionstechniken, Materialpräferenzen und Rezeptionsästhetiken des Hoch- und Spätmittelalters. Im Fokus stehen auch die Frage, wie Material, Form und Technik interagieren und auf künstlerische Prozesse einwirken, sowie das Fazit, dass sie nicht getrennt voneinander verstanden werden können.

Swiss artist Rochus Lussi, born in 1965, examines the individual's existence in the mass. Issues of vulnerability, sensitivity, and defensibility are also key topics of his art, for which he mainly employs the mediums of sculpture and installation, but also drawings and performance. This first monograph on Lussi offers a broad survey of his work from thirty years, featuring small and multi-part installations, wood sculptures, works on paper, and photographs of his performance actions. Vor dem Hintergrund seiner doppelten ­kame- runisch-französischen Staatsbürgerschaft nimmt er eine explizit anti-eurozentrische ­Haltung ein. Seine Aufmerksamkeit richtet sich auf die Ursachen ökologischer Verwerfungen und deren gesellschaftliche Konsequenzen. "Under Different Moons: African Art in Conversation shares--for the first time in print--the UBC Museum of Anthropology's extensive collection of brilliant objects from dozens of African cultures, gathered over nearly a century. These include masks from the Baule peoples of ôCte d'Ivoire, the Bijogos people of Guinea Bissau, and the Dogon peoples from Mali; three Bamana / Bozo puppet sets from Mali and Burkina Faso, with floats, cloth awnings and related animal masks; and Benin panels and castings, Makonde sculpture, and Yoruba thorn carvings that will make their public debut in the exhibition that this book accompanies. Throughout the book are beautiful photos of over 100 objects from the collection, as well as a dozen photos of contemporary artworks by Nigerian and Nigerian-Canadian artists. The first part of this book, by Anthony Alan Shelton, draws on an expansive ethnographic literature to contextualize MOA's collection within seven themes that reoccur in a wide number of societies across the African continent as well as in areas of Brazil and the Caribbean. In the second part, Titilope Salami focuses on contemporary Nigerian and diasporic artists to show the continued relevance of ritual practices in Nigerian artworks. "Where the Power Is: Indigenous Perspectives on Northwest Coast Art brings together contemporary Indigenous knowledge holders with extraordinary works of historical Northwest Coast art that transcend the category of "art" or "artifact" and embody distinct ways of knowing and being in the world. Dozens of Indigenous artists and community members visited the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia to engage with these objects and learn from the hands of their ancestors. The Würzburg sculptor and woodcarver Tilman Riemenschneider (c.1460-1531) worked within established formal traditions, yet succeeded in creating works of a kind that had never been seen before. Against common practice, he left many of his sculptures unpainted. This turned them from life-like images of saints into works of art far removed from the everyday world of the beholder. To see the intricate, supremely carved details of Riemenschneider's sculptures, the play of light and shade on their glazed wooden surfaces, and the moving expressions of the figures' faces and gestures, is as fascinating today as it must have been when they were created. With the help of 217 black and white and 55 colour illustrations, both of complete works and of details, this book gives a representative survey of the ouevre. Unique in the book market, the catalogue part of the book includes all works unanimously attributed to Riemenschneider or his workshop.

Historien om Teodor Bòks flugt under den kolde krig fra Polen og hans udvikling som kunstner i Danmark.Helle & Michael Moesgaard Andersen har gennem en længere årrække interesseret sig for kunst og opbygget egne kunstsamlinger. De kom allerede i 1990’erne i Teodor Bòks atelier og havde samtaler om kunst med ham. De blev straks fascineret af hans niveau og egenart. Endvidere blev de bekendt med hans dramatiske flugt fra Polen. Deres interesse og viden kulminerer efter kildestudier og kunstnerisk gennemgang nu i en bog. Bogen påkalder sig på den ene side interesse med udgangspunkt i forfølgelser, storpolitik, flugt og efterfølgende dansk statsborgerskab. På anden side går bogen i dybden med det kunstneriske virke, Teodor Bòk får i Danmark med en produktion af værker, der ligger langt over det gennemsnitlige. Helle Moesgaard Andersen er cand.mag. og har mangeårig erfaring inden for formidling. Endvidere har Helle tidligere skrevet om kunstnere som Vibeke Tøjner, Kirstine Roepstorff og Astrid Svangren. Michael Moesgaard Andersen er cand.scient.pol. og adj. professor på CBS. Ved siden af erhvervsaktiviteter er Michael tillige aktiv inden for kunstverdenen på en række forskellige felter.
