"The Wetland Project is a beautiful, quietly amazing work of micro-post-geographical art that allows us to be wherever we are and somewhere wonderfully natural and real, simultaneously. It’s an experience I wish everyone could have, and I wish there were more experiences like it."—William GibsonThe Wetland Project book is the print component of a multidisciplinary and multimedia project centred on the sounds emanating from the ṮEḴTEḴSEN marsh, in unceded W̱SÁNEĆ territory (Saturna Island, British Columbia). The book is edited by artists Brady Marks and Mark Timmings, who have been inspired by the sonic phenomena produced by this small patch of Earth to create a 24-hour Slow Radio Broadcast, based on field recordings from the marsh, that radio stations across North America and Europe have aired on Earth Day since 2017; a musical arrangement titled Wetland Senario, co-composed with Stephen Morris and performed by vocal ensemble musica intima; and a new media installation that algorithmically transforms sound frequencies from the marsh recordings into pure colour fields in flux.Contributors to the book include novelist William Gibson, MP and former Green Party leader Elizabeth May, poet and spoken-word performer Susan McMaster, musicologist Stephen Morris, writer Alex Muir, poet and W̱SÁNEĆ First Nation member Philip Kevin Paul, Stó:lō artist, curator, and scholar Dylan Robinson, sound artist and World Soundscape Project member Hildegaard Westerkamp, and curator, writer, and PhD student Laurie White. The algorithmic flow of colour fields throughout the publication combined with photos of the project and an audio interface accessed using smartphones and tablet devices will give the book a colourful, music box-like quality.Awarded first prize in the pictorial category at the 2022 Alcuin Awards for Excellence in Book Design.

Feminist visual poetry that rewrites avant garde poetic history.OO: Typewriter Poems is a book of vispo (visual poetry) glosas (a Spanish poetic form that pays tribute to another poet by incorporating their lines) designed to begin to dismantle the masculinist legacy of avant-garde visual poetics. Avant-garde visual poetics has long been interested in a vanguardism designed to push the genre further using technological advances, and hidden in this vanguardism is a deeply communal, deeply feminist poetics of derivation, homage, and love.OO takes up this communal poetics. The visual poems in this collection merge analog technology (the typewriter) with digital alteration designed to look back, not forward. At once paying homage to the long history of visual poetics and critiquing the progressivist and masculinist ideals that continue to inform the genre, the poems in OO quote uncited lines from visual and concrete poems by some of the major figures of visual poetics (bpNichol, John Riddell, Bob Cobbing) as well as several under-read and understudied female visual poets (Cia Rinne, Mirella Bentivoglio, Paula Claire)."This book is a real gift to vispo, its fans and present and future practitioners."--Helen Hajnoczky, A Teacozy Is a Sometimes"Dani Spinosa's OO pushes buttons, turns keys, and swipes, steals and homages all over poetry... Extravagant, interruptive, declarative and a real kick in the eyeballs."--derek beaulieu

The subject of this collection covers the work of the artist yann beauvais in roughly the last quarter of the 20th century. The years correspond both to his use of the physical medium of photochemical film and his role in the larger history of experimental film in Paris. In the new century yann beauvais moved on both geographically from Paris and artistically into electronic media. But the importance of his activity when he was based in Paris both as an artist in Super 8 and 16mm film and as a champion of other filmmakers through his work as a critic, curator, distributor, and exhibitor, deserves specific attention. He recalled this period with characteristic modesty: There have always been musicians' musicians so I thought maybe I was a filmmakers' filmmaker. I might never have public recognition but other filmmakers might recognize me and realize that, had I not been there, something would have been lacking. The book has two parts: Making Films (1976 - 1997) is a transcription of yann beauvais's spontaneous spoken commentary recorded in 2017 while viewing his film work. It was transcribed and then edited for coherence with his approval.Articles on Film (1979 - 1998) is a translation of the complete text of Poussières d'image published in 1998 by Paris Expèrimental. Certain chapters were originally published separately in English and, in those cases, the original translator is credited. All of the others have been translated for the first time by this book's editor.
In 1982, two superbly talented and driven men—director Sydney Pollack and actor Dustin Hoffman—collaborated to create what became an enduring classic: a movie about a serious, out-of-work actor who takes on the challenge of playing a woman in a TV soap opera and becomes a better man for it.Hoffman had already dedicated four years to the comedy. Pollack was hot off of Absence of Malice when he chose the project, which had lost two earlier directors, had no final guiding script at the start of production, and was the butt of many Hollywood bad jokes. As the only journalist Pollack and Columbia Pictures permitted on the set and in the editing room, Susan Dworkin, a playwright, award-winning documentary writer, and Ms. magazine contributing editor, conducted in-depth interviews not only with its director and star but also with the costume designer, the film editors, costars Teri Garr, Bill Murray, and Dabney Coleman, and many others. In Making ‘Tootsie,’ Dworkin captures their voices while describing how the movie became an award-winning box office sensation and the classic motion picture that the American Film Institute rates as number two on its list of the 100 Funniest American Movies of All Time.
A compendium of creative texts examining our complex and slippery relationships with new technologiesWhat will the internet of the future make possible? Untethering the Web explores the technologies, strategies and anxieties that are coalescing in 2022 to shape a new digital paradigm. As naturalized citizens of today's always-online world and as survivors of a multiyear pandemic, the need to reform our digital tools and approaches is more pressing than ever before. Evolved models for virtual convening, collective organizing and digital ownership are making this possible, and a reckoning for the platformed web and its monolithic tech giants is beginning to feel imminent--but how will it all unfold, and what new pitfalls will emerge? In conjunction with Pioneer Works' seventh Software for Artists Day, in October 2022, creators, technologists and members of our community share their visions for a flourishing digital multiverse, and how they imagine it manifesting over time.
Future Bodies from a Recent Past brings to life a hitherto little-noticed phenomenon in art and sculpture in particular: the reciprocal interpenetration of bodies and technology. With 120 works by 59 artists-primarily from Europe, the USA and Japan-the exhibition is dedicated to the major technological changes since the post-war period and examines their influence on our notions of bodies. With contributions on topics such as the influence of changing production technologies, materialities, and concepts of the body, but also interdisciplinary considerations of body-technology relations, a multi-perspective history of contemporary sculpture will be outlined.
