A prolific writer, photographer, portraitist, and documentarian, Lucia Moholy defies categorization. She was as active in avant-garde circles as she was in the field of information science, advancing an expansive understanding of visual reproduction. While previous publications on Moholy have limited her accomplishments to the five years she spent at the Bauhaus, Lucia Moholy: Exposures presents the full breadth of her writings and photographs for the first time. Extensive essays drawing on new archival discoveries offer insights into her early life in turn-of-the-century Prague, her involvement in the radical social movements of the 1920s in Weimar Germany, her emigration to London, where colleagues and friends included members of the Bloomsbury Group as well as her wartime involvement with microfilm and scientific documentation and her work in the Middle East on behalf of UNESCO. Acknowledging her reception by contemporary artists such as Jan Tichý, the publication demonstrates how Moholy's interdisciplinary approach to photography anticipated the medium's post-analogue present.LUCIA MOHOLYs (1894-1989) photographs in the aesthetics of the New Objectivity continue to shape the international reception of the Bauhaus to this day. After studying art history and philosophy in her native Prague, she worked as an editor before arriving at the Bauhaus with her husband László Moholy-Nagy in 1923. Her bestselling book A Hundred Years of Photography 1839-1939 was highly influential for the recognition of the medium as an art form. In 1959 she settled in Switzerland, where she continued to work as an art critic.

It is hard to define what an art scene actually is. With a sense of irony and plenty of self-confidence, Gregor Guski (*1981 in Olsztyn, Poland) has titled his book "Die Szene" (The Scene), as if there were only one. He is in fact referring to the Düsseldorf art scene, or more precisely, to those artists whose works are currently setting trends and whose personalities have a decisive influence on events in the city. Aside from the big names, graduates of the Düsseldorf Art Academy, and up-and-coming newcomers, Guski presents the Düsseldorf fringe scene in all its variety. His photographs are not documentary, but radically experimental. In close communication with the artists, Guski's photo shoots take place in the protagonists' studios or in environments that shape their art. The photographs become works of art in their own right - flamboyantly decorated theatrical stages in which the sitters are the performers."Die Szene" is an attempt to portray the current artists and trends of the Düsseldorf art scene. Almost 100 artists from all artistic genres are presented.

"In the interstices between film and photography, ad stereotypes and clichés of a Californian paradise, Jack Pierson (born 1960) produces pictures that are deliberately sensual and sentimental. Through a subtle hybridization of genres they raise the central question of autobiographical sincerity as the work's theme and site. By arresting intimate moments, they compose a familiar, private world, happy and nostalgic. By disclosing (or pretending to disclose) something of the artist, they acquire a natural quality that turns them into secret confessions. We are simultaneously in the artist's studio and in the middle of his life, and, I'd be tempted to add, in the idealizing and loving grace of his gaze." --Henry-Claude Cousseau
Cabaret has historically existed on the fringes, populated by those who find themselves, voluntarily or involuntarily, falling outside of conventional society. It pushes the boundaries of gender, politics, identity, power, and social norms. It's live and unpredictable, bringing together a variety of performances to create a unique, and often never-repeated, entertainment experience. A cabaret show consists of a selection of short performances in a variety of styles and genres, including drag, burlesque, boylesque, circus and sideshow. Shows happen anywhere and everywhere - bar, club, theatre, library, carpark; cabaret's adaptability and ephemeral nature are what set it apart from the formality and precision of traditional theater.Life as a Cabaret celebrates the vibrancy and diversity of the underground cabaret scene, uplifting and representing those who are typically overlooked. With a focus on Drag Kings, Queens and In-Betweens, Burlesque, Boylesque and Queerlesque, this book showcases this incredibly dynamic and fascinating world for what it really is - glamorous, polished and professional at times, but also intoxicatingly punk, inescapably queer and gloriously messy. It's a space for experimentation, for pushing and challenging boundaries, for seeking a voice and a platform that's unavailable in mainstream society, creating a different kind of society, even if it's just for one night. Life as a Cabaret is not only a cross-section of the drag world, but also a love letter to it. The photographs showcase each performer's individuality as works of art in and of themselves, immortalizing the beauty and power of these individuals who are determined to stand out from the crowd, embracing the hustle, oddness, contradictions, differences, and most of all, the unstoppable creativity.
Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love were notorious for representing the opposite of “Family Values.” To reframe their notoriety, they consented to a rare photoshoot for Spin magazine with their newborn, Frances Bean. Only 5 images were originally published; the rest of the photoshoot is seen here for the first time."Now the entire family was in bed together, and Hansen remembers how beautiful it was to see everyone in sync. “They just were loving Frances. It was really so apparent,” she said. “It was really about her. They were oblivious to us in a lot of cases, anytime they had the baby.”' -- Guzman Interview in CNN "Three decades later, Hansen and Peacock are revisiting this fabled shoot for the first time in their new book, Family Values (powerHouse Books), an intimate chronicle of a young couple driven by passion and love that eschewed the trappings of fame and celebrity for truth and art. Through Guzman’s portraits, we see the last of a fading breed: the true rock star who spoke for outsiders, misfits and radicals who wanted nothing more than to live by their own rules." -- AnOtherWith an ineffable ability to connect with people through his music, Kurt Cobain was charismatic and full of pathos, something of a lost boy poet struggling against his personal demons while holding the world in thrall. And yet in the midst of his struggles with success, fame, fortune, drugs, and the wounds of a traumatic childhood, he managed in his brief adulthood to get married to Courtney Love—who of course had her own accomplishments as an electrifying and unrestrained lead singer and lyricist. The couple had already emerged as a cultural touchstone when their baby, Frances Bean, was born in 1992. Photographers Guzman captured, amidst toys and pajamas, the sweetness, humor, irony and the simple happiness of a new mom and dad at home with their baby girl. Family Values is a photography book presenting approximately 90 images featuring Kurt, Courtney, and their baby Frances, one morning in their modest Hollywood home selected from a photoshoot that Guzman did for Spin magazine in 1992. Only five photographs from the shoot were published in the magazine at the time, including the cover. Another appeared in Rolling Stone at the time of Kurt Cobain’s death. In Spin, the photos originally accompanied an interview by Jonathan Poneman, which Guzman plans to license to reprint in the book. The book will also include a memoir of the photo shoot written by Guzman and an introduction by curator and music journalist Michael Azerrad. Family Values is a photographic assignment that revealed two famous rock stars who during one brief moment transcended the magnifying glass of fame and were revealed, amidst all the chaos, as being just a mom and dad
A visual celebration of natural Black hair that highlights the powerful connection between mothers and their children during their wash day rituals. “A beautiful love letter to natural hair and the rituals Black women have created.”—Roxane GayIn this stunning book, documentary photographer Tomesha Faxio explores the power of “wash day,” a day that Black women dedicate to washing, detangling, conditioning, and styling their natural hair. The significance of wash day goes far beyond hair care—it’s an opportunity for Black women to pour love into their curly, coily locks and, when they have children, pass on this sacred ritual to the next generation. Wash Day celebrates the unique bonds between Black mothers and their children through intimate photographs of their hair-care routines and insightful stories that detail their natural hair journeys. Faxio brings you into the homes of twenty-six different families, illustrating the many ways that these mothers have used wash day to instill love, acceptance, and confidence in their children about wearing their natural hair. Through hours spent with their children, typically at the kitchen sink, each of these mothers is resisting generations of hair discrimination by creating a space for empowerment, all while finding their own sense of self-acceptance along the way. Capturing the inherent beauty and diversity of natural hair, Wash Day is a visual homage to Black culture, Black rituals, and the generational bonds that strengthen the Black community.

In ihrer Serie "Roller Coaster.
Ernst Scheidegger (1923-2016) ranks among Switzerland's most distinguished 20th-century photographers. His portraits of artists made his name internationally. Scheidegger's photographs of Alberto Giacometti at his Paris studio or in his native Val Bregaglia in Switzerland continue to shape the public image of this celebrated artist today. Marking the centenary of Ernst Scheidegger, who was also the founder of our publishing house, this book offers a fresh and contemporary look at his multi-faceted body of work. It is based on an extensive reappraisal of his estate and features a concise selection of iconic and lesser-known images that demonstrated Scheidegger's prowess as a portraitist. More importantly, however, the volume enables an encounter with Scheidegger's hitherto little-published early work and thus undertakes a reassessment of his entire oeuvre. Essays by Tobia Bezzola, art historian and director of the MASI Lugano, Alessa Widmer, curator and artistic director of Photo Basel art fair, Kunsthaus Zürich conservator Philippe Büttner, and Helen Grob, Scheidegger's long-time companion, trace his career and self-concept as a photographer and round off this beautifully designed photo book.
"Character Arc", the documentary photo series by Pascal Haas (b. 1976), features a collection of portraits of Berlin-based actors. The photos, taken between 2021 and 2023, depict the actors personally, in the park or on the street-outside of their roles, away from the stage and the set. The serene black-and-white analogue portraits show the artists as approachable, free from any artifice. In this way, the images reveal both their strength and their vulnerability, reflecting the uncertainties of the modern age. The rhythm of the series is based on the seasons, as can be discerned from the light, the clothes they are wearing, and the natural surroundings.Actors: Leonie Benesch, Pit Bukowski, Marie Burchard, Marlene Burow, Luka Dimic, Maren Eggert, Mala Emde, Michelangelo Fortuzzi, Luisa-Céline Gaffron, Franz Hartwig, Jacob Matschenz, Wanja Mues, Johannes Nussbaum, Rick Okon, Valerie Pachner, Anneke Kim Sarnau, Daniel Sträßer, Sabin Tambrea, Mina Tander, Lena Urzendowsky, Sebastian Urzendowsky, Luise Wolfram
