Ian is Paul's first book of photos of just one man. It is also remarkable as it was photographed on just two summer days, a year apart, in between Covid lockdowns in Australia. The first shoot is centered around the 1976 Bedford Van that Ian travelled and lived in, which he had largely re-built himself, and depicts his beachside lifestyle, while the second shoot on location in the outback focuses on Ian's job as a mechanic and some of his hobbies. The idea for a book of rock music style portraits came about during the first Covid lockdown in 2020. Paul was friends with the lead singer of a local Sydney band and he had been keen for Paul to shoot his band during rehearsal, including some nudes, for some controversial publicity photos. He told Paul he and his fellow band members often rehearsed naked. ( And in various states of creative inebriation.) As it turned out their plans were stymied firstly by their rehearsal space getting flooded and then by the band being forced to abandon their space due to lockdowns. But the seed had been planted for some kind of rock music book and, despite restrictions, Paul was still able to shoot in indoor locations with one or two people. He knew some men that fit the theme perfectly, either with a music background, or having that rock or roadie look or experience. The idea became to create a homage to those rock industry performers and workers notorious for their on-stage and off-stage lewd and larrikin antics, drawing on the provocative posturing and dance movement of male rockers in action, but take it that step further into fantasy by shooting them in rehearsal, performance and behind the scenes even more blase and risque about their various states of nudity. From well-known portraits of Monaco's "beautiful people" to rarely seen landscapes, this collection of images documents two decades of Helmut Newton's love affair with a sun-kissed world. Helmut Newton was in his 60s and a well-established photographer when he and his wife moved to the Riviera. At an age when many people would consider beginning retirement, Newton instead plunged headfirst into one of the most prolific and liberating stages of his career. The city of Monaco was the perfect backdrop for his fashion photography, and it also provided him with a wealth of subjects for his famous portraits, including the stars of the Ballet de Monte-Carlo and the Princely Family. And it was in Monaco that Newton finally tried his hand at landscapes. While this volume focuses primarily on the years of 1981-2004, it also looks at Newton's historic links with the Côte d'Azur and the area around Bordighera, Italy. There are essays by a range of experts in the field of photography, film, and art and three interviews, including one with Paloma Picasso. In these remarkable photographs readers will discover the Riviera through Newton's fascinated, slightly ironic lens: a way of life characterized by ease and elegance, a world dominated by appearance and superficiality, and a veritable living theatre in which he was both actor and privileged member of the audience.

This series developed out of my wanting to expand the possibilities of still photography through a new approach to the nude in nature. I had long felt that a beautiful body is a work of art by itself, so I didn't need to document that. Instead, I created and perfected my own method of in-camera multiple exposures and I sought out subjects not for their outward appearance, but for their ability to turn feelings into movement.I scouted locations in nature where participants would feel safe to delve into their vulnerability, and to physically express their emotions. I asked my subjects to choose a spot, meditate on their surroundings, and spontaneously move as if they were alone. I didn't direct beyond initial encouragement, and I assured them that they could do nothing wrong. I trusted their intuition to bring out the human condition and make a connection with the Earth. We experimented, trying minimal costuming, then partial nudity, then full nudity. I reacted instinctively and reflexively. As they went into motion, I made many exposures onto each frame of film.These overlaid images frequently created a sort of costume for my subjects. Rather than a literal representation of nudes in nature, these photographs conveyed the sensation of a body in motion, with a roundness, a dynamic, and a dimension that moved beyond a moment in time. A few individuals even metamorphosed into unrecognizable beings. No matter how different my subjects were from each other, they all displayed a plethora of emotions, and communicated them through the universal language of the body.Intricate meshing with nature, complex depths of expression, intriguing effects and juxtapositions...all spontaneously appearing in the camera... after every session, editing was both difficult and a pleasure.One reviewer called my method "risky photography," because there was no way to predict the outcome. The final images formed inside the camera-as multiple exposures layered onto single frames- and I utilized only basic dodging and burning for the final prints. Hans channels the energy into images drenched in both intensity and urgency. Born in Germany, Hans worked throughout Europe prior to immigrating to the United States in 1979. Although his European influences are evident within his vision, the glamour and energy embedded in his images are erotically rooted in his passion for his home in New York City's West Village. And like Hans, so many of the men who journey to his studio are foreign born as well. Yet through his skill and creativity, in front of Hans' lens, they embody and channel the electricity and creativity of the both the artist, and the city. In in his last book, The Naked Truth, Hans unveiled an extensive collection of breathtaking images of a multitude of men that Hans has photographed throughout his career. Each image, and each page, revealed models completely bare, with nothing to hide behind, nothing to mask or conceal their own raw truths. Why then, would Hans follow-up The Naked Truth with The Cover-Up? Why physically expose his models only to then cover them up? The art of reveal is one of Hans greatest skills as an artist. Although many of the models in The Cover-Up are partially covered, the bits of fashion are used to highlight and accentuate the body and specific body parts. Viewers will enjoy the voyeuristic tease Hans creates with the creative uncovering of models. with a variation of textile and transparent materials. But the viewer is rewarded with what is revealed and then, what is left to the imagination. Underwear, jock-straps and jeans are worn to cover and protect, they cling directly to our bodies like a second layer of skin. The uncovering of garments highlights and illuminates the male form exposing it in exciting and unique ways. Like the frame of a painting, Hans uses The Cover-Up to focus our eye and to spotlight a piece of the painting, or a part of the body, creating an erotic transparency that would not be possible if the model was completely nude.
