A thrilling exploration of the world's most innovatively designed hotels with a special focus on food. This influential reference work-revered by architects, designers, restaurateurs, hoteliers and creatives around the world-contains exquisite images from leading photographers and expert commentary from the world's greatest food writers and culinary innovators. Their stories take the reader beyond the dish, the kitchen and the dining room to explore the holistic connectivity between food and locality; its provenance and production; the people, landscape and architecture. From regional terroir, through the kitchen, to the community, the stories gathered from the experts that created them detail their methods of production; work practices; and visionary hospitality. It poses questions such as, how can we travel more responsibly? How can hotels reduce their impact on the environment? How can travelers give back more than they take? Journeying from the ancient island of Crete; through traditions in Swiss and Japanese mountains; to cutting-edge culinary practices in the Caribbean-every hotel featured in this annual compendium is uniquely exquisite.
Finn Juhl (1912-1989) was first and foremost famous for his furniture. In the 1940s, he broke with the established furniture tradition and designed a number of creations that regenerated Danish furniture design. At the Milan Triennials in the 1950s, he was awarded no fewer than five gold medals and won international acclaim for his furniture. But Finn Juhl was not only an excellent furniture designer: he worked with all aspects of the architect's profession. He gained international recognition as an interior designer for his work on the Trusteeship Council Chamber at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. As an exhibition architect, he was the man behind the major showings of Danish applied art abroad which created the concept “Danish design" and paved the way for the Danish furniture industry's export triumphs in the 1960s. This book presents a full-length portrait of Finn Juhl as an artist designer, architect and cultural figure.
Oversigt over hele spektret af dansk klassicistisk møbelkunst i perioden ca. 1790-1850.
BUREAU, with offices in Geneva and Lisbon, is directed by architects Daniel Zamarbide and Carine Pimenta, and visual artist, designer, and art educator Galliane Zamarbide. The practice operates at the intersection of architecture, scenography, design, landscape design, and education. Founded in 2012, the firm focuses on building new and converting existing structures, interior design and furniture, exhibition design, inhabitable sculptures, and temporary pavilions. Their buildings and interventions feature spatial experiments, unusual shapes and perspectives, and play with the time factor as well. BUREAU thus navigates across the traditional boundaries of architecture, design, visual art, architectural teaching, and cultural education. Short Stories is the first survey of the firm's work to date. Brief texts-some narrative, some descriptive and categorizing-are contributed by architects and researchers Fabrizio Gallanti, André Tavares, and Marina Otero Verzier; curators and critics Julia Albani and Tirdad Zolghadr; designer and curator Alexandra Midal; and by Daniel Zamarbide. Some 360 images, as well as concise information on the depicted buildings and projects by BUREAU, round off this beautiful book.

The first monograph on the work of the designer of the iconic 40/4 chair The American industrial designer and inventor David Rowland is best known for his signature 40/4 chair. Released in 1964, it is so named because it is possible to stack forty chairs in just four feet - an unprecedented achievement that established an entirely new category of versatile seating. Rowland's wife Erwin and writer Laura Schenone reveal the inspiring story of how he brought his ground-breaking design to market. Initially, it was rejected by all the major furniture brands, including Herman Miller and Knoll, but Rowland persevered, and ultimately, the 40/4 chair became one of the most successful chairs ever produced, winning numerous accolades and selling over 8 million by the early 21st century. Today it is found in the permanent collections of museums worldwide, and gracing public and private spaces of every type - from cathedrals to cultural centres, corporate and municipal buildings, to places of worship, schools, healthcare, hospitality and homes. This fascinating biography of David Rowland and his 40/4 chair, featuring more than 250 photographs and documents (many never seen before), tells the compelling story of his design practice and a singular chair, whose design, through the determination of its designer, became the commercially successful and influential classic that it is. The first monograph on American designer, David Rowland: 40/4 Chair , is published to mark the 60th anniversary of this timeless design and includes the wide range of Rowland's work before and after the development of his masterpiece. |The first monograph on the work of the designer of the iconic 40/4 chair| Erwin Rowland is a crafts designer and was married to David Rowland from 1971 until his death in 2010. Laura Schenone is a writer, editor, journalist, and James Beard Award winner. David Rowland was a pioneering Mid-Century designer. The first book, accompanying a traveling exhibition, dedicated to Cuban mid-century design anchored by an under-acknowledged collection of graphic design, prototypes, and furniture, much of which has never been exhibited outside the island or published.Primarily focused on the post-revolutionary era of Cuba from the late 1950s through the 1970s, this volume brings together a prolific cohort of artists, designers, and architects that materialized the ideology of their time, and ultimately narrate the country’s arc from revolutionary promise to authoritarian retrenchment. Design and architecture played an important role in shaping the country's identity and cultural expression during this time period. Consisting of nearly 100 works, including approximately 50 pieces of furniture, the exhibition and accompanying catalogue features seminal objects of functional design, architectural renderings, speculative prototypes for a “design for all” ethos, and key examples of art and graphic design that contributed to the zeitgeist of the era. The book also includes several examples by contemporary Cuban artists and designers who explore how this post-revolutionary aesthetic survives today.
‘Panton – Environments, colours, systems, patterns’ is part of the new series Compact design classics.»A less successful experiment is preferable to a beautiful platitude.« Verner PantonVerner Panton is the enfant terrible of Danish design. While his Danish colleagues during the 1950s and 60s prioritised natural materials and manual craftsmanship, Panton went abroad and experimented with coloured plastic, fibre glass, steel and synthetic fabrics and tried out new industrial mass-production methodsThis book examines Panton’s almost scientific approach to environments, colours, systems and patterns unfolded in colourful total interiors and imaginative product designs. Panton’s oeuvre is presented as a truly pioneering effort that points towards modern design and the role of the visual experience in a globalised society.Ida Engholm, professor and PhD (The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation), and Anders Michelsen, professor and PhD (University of Copenhagen), has created a thought-provoking and multi-facetted portrait of one of Denmarks most influential designers.
- First book by master sculptor and craftsman Michael Coffey- Memoir that spans from the Great Depression, to the tumult of New York City in the 1960s and 1970s, to a long, dedicated career making some of the most high sought after pieces of wood furniture- A highly sophisticated reflection on the relationship between art and lifeMichael Coffey: Sculptor and Furniture Maker in Wood unsettles the conventional distinction between craftsman and artist, which is often assumed to be the difference between creating something new, as opposed to reproducing old forms. Inspired by but not beholden to artist-craftsmen such as George Nakashima, Wendell Castle, and Jack Rogers Hopkins, Coffey's handmade, one-of-a-kind works seamlessly combine the irregular forms of nature, an aesthetic built on the variable and unexpected, with a deep sense for the haptic and functional qualities of wood. This book includes not only a generous reproduction of Coffey's body of work, but also an in-depth autobiographical reflection on how his formative experience, from his rural and bohemian childhood to community organizing, and to the discovery of his passion for woodworking, molded him into the sculptor and artisan he is today. Coffey makes all his work in his western Massachusetts studio, deeply integrating his life and practice. This reflects the work itself, as this book makes clear, Coffey's pieces that are both uniquely sculptural but also highly functional, recognizing the complex relationship people have with the objects they choose for their space. His pieces are meant to be lived in.

This book explores the significant contribution to design culture made by Cassina, the first company to develop and industrialize timeless reeditions.Since 1973, when Cassina launched the iMaestri Collection, the company has authentically reissued some of the most iconic models by the greatest architects of the twentieth century. The brand began this process in 1965 with the first reeditions of furniture by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand, expanding over the years to create a specific collection with names such as Erik Gunnar Asplund, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and Gerrit Thomas Rietveld. These designs have been updated, finding new life, thanks to innovative technological development carried out by the company, always in respect of the original designs. The collection also tells of encounters between the company and renowned Italian architects, including Franco Albini, Gio Ponti, and Carlo Scarpa, and of how this combination of creative excellence and production quality has generated such extraordinary works. With the introduction of designs by Giacomo Balla, Marco Zanuso, Ico Parisi, and Vico Magistretti, the Cassina iMaestri Collection has become a symbol of timeless elegance representing the true essence of excellence Made in Italy. Thanks to its original graphic design, the book reflects the richness and variety of Cassina’s catalog in which icons naturally dialogue with contemporary pieces to fully emphasize the continuity between past, present, and future. The book, edited by Ivan Mietton, is organized into five thematic chapters that feature influential texts and new photographic material produced by international contributors.
