The world-renowned architect Arne Jacobsen created a wealth of world-class buildings and functional designs. Late in his career, he revealed that if he had to choose just one of his designs, it would be St Catherine’s College, affectionately known as Catz, in Oxford. This is the story of Catz in the past, present, and future. The book describes the genesis of the project, the architecture, and the surrounding park and introduces some of the students who live here and are being shaped by this unique place. The college is viewed through the lens of film, literature, poetry, satire, music, critique and recollections and illuminated with new photographs, student interviews, forgotten or overlooked stories and drawings from England and Denmark – and much more. The author, architect René Kural, PhD, has written several books on significant works of architecture. Architecture photographer Rasmus Hjortshøj took all the new photographs for the book.

Abgerundet wird das Buch durch vertiefende Beiträge, zwei fotografische Essays, ausgewählte Studentenarbeiten und Archivaufnahmen.Diese Publikation erscheint als Sonderausgabe der Reihe Laboratorium. The publication Two Lakes is the result of a comparative study of two cultural regions - Lake Lucerne in Switzerland and Lake Biwa in Japan. Based on the results of a five-year cooperation entitled The Culture of Water (2018-2023) between the Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture and the Kyoto Institute of Technology, it engages with the architecture of the future. Addressing the core themes of danger, beauty, commons and eternity - and their according relationships to water - it develops hypotheses on both regions with respect to the interdependence between people and the architecture they produce. The book is rounded off by in-depth articles, two photographic essays and archive documents.
The book explores the advanced façade systems according to the productive and constructive contents, in a cognitive and operative form, as a manual text to provide guidelines for researchers, technicians and professionals. It provides operational guidance for the technological design, production planning and site executive coordination for the realization of façade systems. The analysis deals with the main building elements and technical interfaces. The study of the façade systems, after explaining the anchoring structures and their connections to the load-bearing elements, investigates the criteria for the assembly between the framings. In particular, the book examines the technical interfaces of the main advanced envelope systems with respect to the functional, constructive and applicative coordination procedures of the mullions and transoms framing, of the structural sealant glazing façade system, of the unit façade system, of the suspended façade system and of the double skin façade system. The technical and manual character of the book is also expressed through the analysis of the functional and application procedures of the gaskets with respect to the façade systems in order to prevent the transmission of air and water loads: the analysis focuses on the connections between the framing and the enclosure elements of the envelope, in accordance with the compensation of height differences in order to guarantee impermeability, airtightness and insulation. Then, the book describes the assembly and interface conditions between elements of different composition and production within the façade systems: the examination of the technical interfaces involves the development and application of sealants, based on the loads exerted on the jointing devices, in order to fulfill the requirements of sealing and tightness with respect to mechanical, thermal and hygrometric, water, air and wind stresses. Moreover, the study of the envelope systems examines the methodologies directed toward fulfilling the requirements with respect to the actions caused by fire loads, considering the contents related to both components and connections and fixing surfaces.

This book explores membrane materials as a means of translating natural and renewable resources into a more flexible, dynamic, and reactive architectural skin. It represents the first time that energy-saving design has been addressed systematically in relation to lightweight building systems and tensile membranes. Understanding of the energetic behavior of membranes and foils used as a building envelope is a fundamental theme, as it is the integration of flexible photovoltaics in membranes, as well as the exploitation of water and wind resources. A theoretical, methodological framework for consciously designing the membrane life cycle is presented. The authors cross-cut and combine exploration of climate-based design methodology and life cycle thinking strategies. Both active and passive systems are investigated, referring to alternative productive resources like sun, wind, and water. Case studies are brought forward in the book's second half, highlighting energy lightness for an increasingly dematerialized architecture and addressing inherent issues. Four main research and development paths are presented, the first two focusing on advancements in facade materials and Photovoltaic systems applicable to membrane architecture, the third referring to fog and dew harvesting and the fourth dealing with the future frontier of flexible transparency and designs for well-being through a passive solar system.

Construction Materials and Their Properties for Fire Resistance and Insulation covers the properties of novel types of concrete and other more conventional building materials in fire scenarios. The volume also stands out as an invaluable reference resource for its relevance to varied audiences both in academia and industry, spanning materials science, civil and structural engineering, and fire safety engineering. Ensuring buildings are fire safe starts at the very beginning of planning new builds or renovations. Hence, it's essential, in fact, that the right materials are chosen not only according to their load-bearing capabilities but also their susceptibility to decay and fire resistance.
Current planning and design modes of dwellings and neighbourhoods are facing challenges of both philosophy and form. Past approaches no longer sustain new demands and require innovative thinking. The need for a new outlook is propelled by fundamental changes that touch upon environmental, economic and social aspects. The depletion of non-renewable natural resources, elevated levels of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change are a few of the environmental challenges that force designers to reconsider conceptual approaches in favour of ones that promote a better suitability between communities and nature. Consideration of overall planning concepts that minimize the development's carbon footprint, district heating, passive solar gain, net-zero residences and preserving the site's natural assets are some of the contemporary strategies that architects, planners and builders are integrating into their thought process and residential design practice.Increasing costs of material, labour, land and infrastructure have posed economic challenges with affordability being paramount among them. The need to do with less brings about concepts that include denser places, adaptable and expandable dwellings, and smaller-sized yet quality designed housing. Also, the need to reduce utility costs gave rise to better insulation, which benefits both the environment and the occupant.Social challenges are also drawing the attention of designers, builders and homeowners. As the "e;baby-boom"e; generation plans for retirement, housing an elderly population will take priority. Walkable communities, ageing in place and multigenerational living are some of the concepts considered. In addition, live-work environments have become part of the economic reality for those who wish to work from home - which has become possible through digital advances. The need to think innovatively about neighbourhoods led to the idea to write this book. The intention is to offer information on contemporary community design concepts and illustrate them with outstanding international examples.

System. Helhed.
Countering the phenomenon of sprawl in the often anonymous or chaotic urban periphery, the Oassis neighborhood in Lausanne takes a unique approach based on urbanity and hybridization. Located on a former industrial wasteland in the west of the city, Oassis reflects the compositional principles of the traditional city, while also engaging in the dynamics of ecological transition and climate resilience. This 'urban fragment' is both an urban fabric, compatible with future developments in the neighborhood, and an architectural object characterized by urbanity. The contemporary challenges of regenerating suburban areas are addressed here through diverse development programs and a profusion of gardens. Skilful combination of economic, ecological and social factors with high-quality architecture With unpublished documents and specially commissioned photographs

What if urban planning and design were to prioritize rather than merely accommodate the unbuilt environment? Territorial Urbanism Now! calls for a paradigm shift in the conception of urban transformation. It urges us to favor sustainable systems in order to collectively tackle the challenges of climate change. Until now, urban planning and design professionals have integrated green and active mobility systems in the residual spaces available. In the reverse approach envisioned here, these systems become structuring elements of the territory, supported by a much more frugal built environment. The contributions by urbanists, artists, architects, and landscape architects in this publication come from research, practice, and teaching. Paola Viganò, Eric Luiten, Sandra Guinand-in conversation with Ali Madanipour, Chris Younès, Christian Schmid, Eric Wieërs, and Maarten Van Acker-Stefan Rettich, Tommaso Pietropolli, Elena Andonova, Julio de la Fuente, Natalia Gutiérrez, Ward Verbakel, Claudia Bode, Philipp Misselwitz, Davide Curatola Soprana, Beatrice Galimberti, Lilli Licka, Hannes Gröblacher, Johannes Bernsteiner, Stefan Devoldere, Anselm Wagner, Susanne Eliasson, Eva Pfannes, Jesse Honsa, and Stefan Bendiks not only introduce a much-needed paradigm shift, but also show us the premises for its realization.
In an age of glossy architectural visualizations and slick photography, today's media is saturated with images of projects mummified in their ideal, untouched, and unused state. Every design and technical publication on landscape architecture tries to teach us how to do things based on best practices. Rarely do we see a landscape project that has been in use for five or even ten years. To counterbalance this status quo, it is time to review and scrutinize the Sh*tscapes : typical mistakes in the design of our public realm. This publication is a compendium of a hundred failures made in the design, construction, or maintenance processes of urban landscapes. Looking at these unsuccessful examples, the authors propose simple and practical solutions aimed at preventing common mistakes, predicting future scenarios, and averting or accepting failures.
