Besides their notable historical and cultural significance, heritage buildings crucially contribute to the economy of those countries that rely heavily on the tourism industry. Investigation and monitoring of the origins of deterioration and damage are therefore key to the preservation of architectural heritage. Diagnosis of Heritage Buildings by Non-Destructive Techniques offers an up-to-date overview of state-of-the-art knowledge by collating specialized studies written by an international group of experts in the field, while also examining the value of these non-intrusive methods through a number of real-life case studies which prove NDT techniques’ global relevance. The volume is an invaluable reference resource for students, researchers, and practitioners alike.
This book provides the reader with an understanding of the impact that different morphologies, construction materials and green coverage solutions have on the urban microclimate, thus affecting the comfort conditions of urban inhabitants and the energy needs of buildings in urban areas. The book covers the latest approaches to energy and outdoor comfort measurement and modelling on an urban scale, and describes possible measures and strategies to mitigate the effects of the mutual interaction between urban settlements and local microclimate.Despite its relevance, only limited literature is currently devoted to appraising-from an engineering perspective-the intertwining relationships between urban geometry and fabrics, energy fluxes between buildings and their surroundings, outdoor microclimate conditions and building energy demands in urban areas. This book fills this gap by first discussing the physical processes that govern heat and mass transfer at an urban scale, while emphasizing the role played by different spatial arrangements, manmade materials and green infrastructures on the outdoor microclimate. The first chapters also address the implications of these factors on the outdoor comfort conditions experienced by pedestrians, and on the buildings' energy demand for space heating and cooling. Then, based upon cutting-edge experimental activities and simulation work, this book demonstrates current and forthcoming adaptation and mitigation strategies to improve the urban microclimate and its impact on the built environment, such as cool materials, thermochromic and retroreflective finishing materials, and green infrastructures applied either at a building scale or at the urban scale. The effect of these solutions is demonstrated for different cities worldwide under a range of climate conditions. Finally, the book opens a wider perspective by introducing the basic elements that allow fuel poverty, raw materials consumption, and the principles of circular economy in the definition of a resilient urban settlement.

Now, he shares his secrets with this book that provides the most accessible, streamlined, and effective methods for learning to draw. Taking the reader through the entire process, beginning with the most basic skills to more advanced such as volumetric drawing, shading, and figure sketching, this book contains numerous projects and guidance on what and how to practice. It also features instructional images and diagrams as well as finished drawings that showcase Matthewt's creative work. With this book and a dedication to practice, anyone can learn to draw!
The book deepens understanding of biomass sources and technologies used for cooking worldwide. It contributes directly to the creation of policies aimed at the mitigation of climate change.Historically, wood is considered humanity's first source of energy. Even after decades of use and industrialization processes, it is still considered the most important single source of renewable energy. About a third of the world's population is energetically dependent on wood for cooking and/or heating. Recently, the Covid-19 pandemic made it impossible to purchase fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), forcing families in financial difficulties to opt for cheaper and more accessible sources of energy, such as wood and vegetable coal. This has been the picture of many families around the world and negatively impacts the environment and energy security. Considering that there are still many wood residues that are wasted and that tropical forests need to be conserved, knowledge aboutthe energy use of wood residues is also essential. This is even more relevant when considering the significant volume of biomass coming from the sustainable management of the largest tropical forest in the world, the Amazon Forest. The book considers which wood variables should be taken into account when thinking about energy generation, how do food cooking technologies contribute to potentiating pollutants emissions, and how can these harmful effects be mitigated. It describes the chemical composition of biomass and the chemical compounds released during its burning, as well as their impacts on the environment and human health. It also presents the influence that technologies used in food cooking have on pollutant emissions and which alternatives can be used, such as the use of solar energy.
The book presents the remarkable history of the emergence in the past two decades of the dramatically new design of multi-tower and multi-functional tall building clusters. Based upon a decade of architectural research, the book provides a definition of the new typology, here termed The Tower Cluster, and its major concepts, design characteristics, and the typological knowledge required to design creative sub-variants. It provides the detailed analysis of a large series of recent case studies of the typology. In addition, the book categorizes various types of sky amenities such as sky pools, sky plazas, outlook decks, and other functions that have been, in this new typology, distributed through the vertical order of the tower cluster in order to create a new form of Vertical Campus which contains a designed selection of social, cultural, commercial, and entertainment facilities. The various types of groupings of advanced amenities in multi-story residential buildings, hotel buildings, office buildings, and high-tech headquarters/research buildings are presented and discussed in detail. The design knowledge and architectural knowledge of tower clusters and their vertical amenity structures are defined, and the definition and general application of typological knowledge in design provides to the reader a valuable knowledge base for the future designs of creative sub-variants tower clusters, as well as for their urban and landscape development. Thereby, the highly articulated knowledge component contained in the book becomes a valuable contribution to the future design of tower clusters as well as to the creation of a model of how to define architectural knowledge. It constitutes a brilliant working guide for the design of new skyscrapers. This work is part of a broad historical quest for an architectural medium - a typology of design - that might be capable of transferring certain urban social places to new locations above their traditional ground-based urban locations. That is, this provides a new medium To Socialize the Sky!Robert Oxman is a Professor and Dean Emeritus of the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning, The Technion, Israel Institute of Technology. At the Technion he is a Professor of Architectural Design History and Theory. He is a Registered Architect in Massachusetts, and The State of Israel.

A stylish and fascinating insight into the diverse architecture of Britain's built heritage, covering the 20th century and beyond.
This edited book brings together insights from scholars and practitioners from many different fields to uncover the role of the construction and real estate sectors and how they align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It follows a lifecycle-based approach to the topic, addressing the design, construction, management, investment, and regulatory dimensions of projects in the area. It expands the reader¿s understanding of the built environment beyond the design and construction phases, which enables the collection to explore the links and transitions between different project phases and uncover new methodologies that aim to tackle systemic sustainable development challenges. The chapters¿ comprehensive coverage allows the collection to capitalize on the strengths and weaknesses of the building industry, highlight emerging trends, and uncover some critical gaps that need to be addressed to attain the 2030 vision. This puts into perspective the interconnected nature of the SDGs and highlights the importance of multi-stakeholder collaborations in achieving them.

To ensure that future generations will still find a pleasant living space, climate-friendly construction is crucial. The design and choice of materials help to considerably reduce the environmental impact of climate change caused by buildings. This present description of vernacular building techniques from all climate zones provides architects with solutions from non-European and earlier societies for the planning of their building concepts. The low-tech approaches, illustrated in schematic drawings and explained in text, are a source of inspiration for the design of sustainable and energy-autonomous building structures. Architecture Follows Climate provides the first in-depth and comprehensive overview of passive building techniques that have been tried and tested for centuries.
