Tratto da una storia vera, questo racconto storico descrive la grande manifattura artigianale della produzione pavimentale ad intarsio in sabbia e cemento (chiamate oggi volgarmente "cementine") tra la metà dell'ottocento fino a giungere ai giorni nostri. Il protagonista della storia (un giovane studente universitario che durante il racconto diverrà un architetto) viene coinvolto inizialmente nell'avvenimento come scopritore di questi antichi manufatti e dopo come artigiano produttore dello stesso. Difatti, con l'aiuto di due anziani maestri d'opera (discendenti da una delle grandi famiglie di produttori) conosciuti per caso ne descrive, oltre alla "magia" della creazione della mattonella in tutte le sue fasi produttive, anche tutta la nascita della stessa manifattura dal tempo della seconda rivoluzione industriale (1859) attraversando l'intero novecento. Il tutto condito da una ricca testimonianza fotografica (con un vasto archivio di materiale originale d'epoca avuto grazie alla conservazione amorevole dei due maestri d'arte) e con aneddoti e fatti realmente accaduti,che metteranno in luce una successione di emozioni tra tutti i protagonisti rimanendo "attaccati" fedelmente al contesto storico attraversato. La conclusione della storia, metterà a dura prova la passione intrapresa dal giovane architetto cresciuto all'interno di questa meravigliosa avventura.

John Gaw Meem was one of New Mexico's most renowned architects and his legacy is in part his contribution to the preservation and renewal of historic American Southwestern architecture. Because of his interest in the preservation, restoration and revival of this architecture, one of his major contributions was the design of a group of Spanish Pueblo Style buildings at the University of New Mexico. Today, Meem's Zimmerman Library remains a centerpiece for his designs on the campus. The archives of the Meem Room in the library contain a wealth of drawings done by Meem and this book lauds Meem's substantial use of crafted ornamentation and details such as gates, doors, corbels, fireplaces, metal work and light fixtures, and shows his sensitivity to the cultural environment he in turn contributed so much to as an example for homeowners, builders, and designers everywhere.
