In 1890, the artist Joakim Skovgaard was asked to take on the colossal task of decorating the walls and ceilings of Viborg Cathedral. Twenty-six years later, the final result was ready: more than 2,500 square metres covered in frescoes and paintings in a style that merges history with modernity.Today, the scenes are as fresh and radiant as ever after a thorough restoration of the paintings undertaken by the National Museum of Denmark and the Viborg Diocese. To mark the occasion, the authors of this volume, in collaboration with the Skovgaard Museum, explored the many different facets of the frescoes and their creation, from their artistic and theological significance to their technical execution. Every single work of art in the cathedral is reproduced in this book, which offers new perspectives and paves the way for a renewed appreciation of this milestone feat in Danish art history.

Architectural artefacts are negotiated as epistemic objects, an autonomous and innovative form of knowledge capable of inaugurating and institutionalising architectural research. The backbone of this publication is a dialogue between the architect Matthias Ballestrem and the philosopher and architectural theorist Lidia Gasperoni. In a vibrant discussion, they consider the epistemic value of the architectural artefact, the role of research practices in making this knowledge explicit and accessible, and the criteria for qualifying as design-based research. Alex Arteaga, Fabrizia Berlingieri, Peter Bertram, Helga Blocksdorf, Andelka Bnin-Bninski, Marta Fernández Guardado, Joerg Fingerhut, Anke Haarmann, Rolf Hughes, Rachel Hurst, Daniel Norell, Tomas Ooms, Claus Peder Pedersen, Tim Simon-Meyer, and Philip Ursprung have added short comments and images to enrich the arguments with criticism, extensions, associations, and references. An afterword by Marcelo Stamm provides a theoretical reflection on a possible taxonomy of epistemic artefacts.
In his ongoing research into the effects of windows and how the different usages influence their design, the Japanese architect Yoshiharu Tsukamoto has travelled to Scandinavia and Finland. The result is this book, The Nordic Window – the first ever publication on the topic. Here, Tsukamoto and his students at the Tokyo Institute of Technology analyse a long list of canonical projects from the Nordic architectural tradition through beautiful photographs and elaborate drawings. His approach emphasises both the physical elements of the window, but also the more ephemeral aspects such as behaviour and atmosphere. This book is a study into how the design of windows is shaped by different cultures and social contexts. The fascination and tenderness shines through the text, while it presents a unique perspective on the architectural tradition that we are so familiar with. Through this exquisite example of Japanese craftsmanship, we are invited to see the Nordic architecture through the eyes of an acclaimed Japanese architect.Yoshiharu Tsukamoto is one of the founding member of the acclaimed Japanese architecture studio Atelier Bow-Wow and a lecturer at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Together with his studio, he has previous published the books Pet Architecture Guide Book and Made in Tokyo.

John Gaw Meem was one of New Mexico's most renowned architects and his legacy is in part his contribution to the preservation and renewal of historic American Southwestern architecture. Because of his interest in the preservation, restoration and revival of this architecture, one of his major contributions was the design of a group of Spanish Pueblo Style buildings at the University of New Mexico. Today, Meem's Zimmerman Library remains a centerpiece for his designs on the campus. The archives of the Meem Room in the library contain a wealth of drawings done by Meem and this book lauds Meem's substantial use of crafted ornamentation and details such as gates, doors, corbels, fireplaces, metal work and light fixtures, and shows his sensitivity to the cultural environment he in turn contributed so much to as an example for homeowners, builders, and designers everywhere.

A brilliant, ambitious follow–up to The Secret Lives of Buildings, in which Hollis turns his focus from the great architectural constructions of the past to the now–vanished chambers they once contained. The rooms we live in are always more than just four walls. As we decorate these spaces and fill them with objects and friends, they shape our lives and become the backdrop to our sense of self. one day, the structures will be gone, but even then, traces of the stories and the memories they contained will persist. In this dazzling work of imaginative reconstruction, edward Hollis takes us to the sites of great abodes now lost to history and piecing together the fragments that remain, re–creates their vanished chambers. From Rome's palatine to the old palace of Westminster and the petit Trianon at Versailles, from the sets of MGM studios in Hollywood to the pavilions of the Crystal palace and the author's own grandmother's sitting room, The Memory Palace is a glittering treasure trove of luminous forgotten places and the alluring people who lived in them.
