The acclaimed architectural geniuses of the Portuguese world, AIRES MATEUS, have been invited to participate in the Venice Architecture Biennale five times since 2010. This publication introduces the five breathtakingly poetic installations that they have contributed to the world's most renowned architectural event. The Venice Architecture Biennale, one of the most acclaimed events in the world of architecture, is undoubtedly the most prominent of about twenty biennales and triennials devoted to the field worldwide. The international affair brings together leading practitioners from around the world to share knowledge and developments on questions of contemporary relevance. It is a particular distinguishment for the architectural practice AIRES MATEUS to have been invited to participate in this biennale five times. Founded in the 1980s and led by the two brothers Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus, the practice has gained international recognition for its poetic reinterpretation of architectural traditions in Portugal. Their impact on the current architectural scene in the Portuguese world is unparalleled. This publication, which introduces the five architectural installations contributed to the Venice Biennale by AIRES MATEUS over the past decade, consists of five individual parts. Each of the five books is dedicated to one installation in Venice. They are held together by a vertical slipcase, discretely and beautifully embossed. The breathtaking projects presented in this volume set an outstanding example of how architectural installations reflect space in a sensitive, poetic, and even mathematical way. Every installation is introduced by a short essay, specially written for this publication by philosophers, architects, and an art critic. Contributors include Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateus, Ricardo Carvalho, Nuno Crespo, Sofia Pinto Basto, Paulo Pires do Vale, and Delfim Sardo.
Roberto Zancan und Javier Fernandez Contreras, Abteilung Innenarchitektur, HEAD Genève.--The analysis of sanitary spaces and places dedicated to personal care, as in a privacy observatory, helps with the in-depth assessment of social changes, allowing us to determine how the lives of users can be improved, how conflicts of use in public places can be resolved between populations of different sexes and ages, and how the quality of public and private health can be enhanced. Observing these issues pushes us to explore the forms and meanings of bathrooms and private spaces in relation to their different functions, including those of transgressive and informal meeting places and spaces of inevitable and forced social coexistence. This book constitutes a new step in this field of research, presenting a series of scientific and artistic interventions that proves the diverse range of uses to which "wet rooms" can be put in social life, the evolution of the use of furniture, and the new meanings of details and objects in domestic bathrooms and public toilets. Roberto Zancan, Javier Fernández Contreras, Department of Interior Architecture, HEAD - Genève.

In the center of Copenhagen, on the sixth floor of the Royal Hotel, Room 606 preserves the definitive masterwork of the Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen, in microcosm. Room 606 is the only surviving interior of the SAS House: the combined luxury hotel and satellite air terminal that Jacobsen designed for the Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) and finished in 1960.The SAS House was the most complete commission of Jacobsen’s career, in which he exercised the full range of his talents as a designer of furniture, lamps, textiles, gardens, lettering and tableware. As the fragment that encapsulates the whole building, Room 606 serves as a lens for reconstructing Jacobsen’s vanished masterwork in words and images.Richly illustrated with nearly 500 photographs and drawings, this book guides the reader on a virtual tour through the Royal Hotel and SAS Air Terminal as they were in 1960 – and traces the origins of the SAS House to a series of earlier buildings and objects. As a result, the study of Jacobsen’s work that begins in Room 606 ultimately provides a general introduction to his entire career.New York-based architect Michael Sheridan is an internationally recognized scholar of modern Danish architecture and design. His books on these subjects include Landmarks: The Modern House in Denmark (2014) and Louisiana: Architecture and Landscape (2017).
Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-78) is one of the most significant artists of 18th-century Rome, whose works brought him fame even during his own lifetime. He trained as an architect, but is most famous for the graphic prints that have fascinated people for centuries. This book, published to accompany SMK’s exhibition Piranesi – Vision and Veracity, explores the power of his art to fascinate viewers. Thanks to his supreme mastery of graphic techniques, Piranesi was able to create detailed and impressive visual universes in which it is impossible not to lose oneself. The ruins of antiquity are a favoured motif in his mission to show the Rome of the past as the zenith of civilisation, creativity and innovation.Piranesi’s goal was not, however, solely to depict reality as he saw it. He infused his images with impressive, dramatic elements, radically manipulating their perspectives. The resulting works convince as both visions and veracity.
Guide to Danish Architecture is a two-volume series that covers the period from around the year 1000 to 1995. The second volume begins in around 1960, when the industrialization of building took hold in earnest, and in a few years changed the conditions for the creation of architecture.Guide 2 is arranged around individual categories of building divided into time segments of about a decade. This approach was chosen because during the period covered by this volume, these categories determined the appearance of architecture and especially the layout of plans. One category of this kind is school construction, which produced specific types of buildings to meet functional needs. The guide is introduced by a review of changing architectural ideals in the post-war period and of dramatic changes in conditions for architecture that have proved of great importance for the appearance of architecture in our time.Together, the two guides, with their 1,800 illustrations, provide a concentrated history of architecture in Denmark - the largest of its kind ever published.
