Henry Flitcroft was first employed by the leading aristocratic architect of the time, Richard Boyle, Lord Burlington, who helped him to establish his long career. Flitcroft had about 50 clients over 40 years, working for many dynasties, including the royal family, the Bedfords, the Yorke/Hardwickes and the Malton/Rockinghams. Remarkably, he was employed regularly by the Duke of Montagu and his family from 1725 to 1765, and the Hoare family from 1728 to his death in 1769, and was responsible for some of the great country houses of the period including Wimpole, Woburn Abbey and Wentworth Woodhouse. This is the first book which details his life and examines his complete body of work. It sets Flitcroft within his social context, providing insights into those for whom he worked as well as his fellow architects. Flitcroft waged fierce battles to maintain his professional positions at Westminster Abbey and St Paul's and the documents are revealed here for the first time. The book dissects the dramatic story of Flitcroft's insane son and the legal cases that ensued which link Flitcroft and G.E. Street, who inherited Flitcroft's own house in Hampstead. In addition, Flitcroft's furniture designs are assessed and his notable churches and London buildings including Chatham House, Benjamin Franklin House and Pushkin House. Finally, his last great project at Stourhead is re-examined.
Classicism is ubiquitous, from the facade of Selfridges to the letterhead of The Times, to the pedimented porches of neo-Georgian housing estates. This book invites readers to discover in their surroundings a rich language of form which is there to be revealed. It discusses the pleasures and problems of post-medieval architectural classicism, both its rigour and flexibility, its perfections and incompleteness, its continuities and innovations, and its expressiveness - from the camp to the sublime, and from originality to plagiarism. Abandoning conventional chronological, biographical or stylistic arrangements, the book makes connections between familiar art historical periods, focusing on looking closely at the buildings and their details, from which useful generalisations emerge. The book discusses how Renaissance architects, when faced with the bewildering variety of classical antiquity, produced canonical versions of the orders and thus a systematic method of designing in the antique manner. It asks how the highly regulated language of classicism can sustain the originality of a Michelangelo, a Soane or a John Simpson and looks at the human body in relation to classical architecture. It examines the various treatments of the wall and of lettering on classical buildings, before concluding with a chapter on architectural backgrounds in Quattrocento art, revealing how this can lead to a different kind of looking at painting and sculpture.

A photographic exploration of one of Ohio's most remarkable landmarks Nearly 100 years after its construction, the Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center in Columbus, Ohio, is finally receiving the artistic recognition it deserves in this richly illustrated book. In the early 1920s, when plans for the Ohio Judicial Center building were initially conceived, American culture and politics were in a period of transition and turbulence. The country emerged from World War I, moved through the Roaring Twenties, and then sank into the Great Depression. To counter the effects of this economic crisis, public art was often commissioned for government buildings, including the Ohio Judicial Center, which was completed in 1933 and showcases work from 12 artists. Featuring more than 100 photographs taken by Richard W. Burry, Art and History in the Ohio Judicial Center is the first book to celebrate the building's impressive architectural detail and highlight its 200 Art Deco- and Beaux Arts-style murals, reliefs, and mosaics. Burry tells the story of the public art in the Ohio Judicial Center and provides illuminating historical context, helping the present-day reader to understand the building's art not only from a contemporary perspective but also through the eyes of those living almost a century ago.

"Prishtina in 53 Buildings" draws a multifaceted portrait of Kosovo's capital city by using architecture as a prism to understand political, cultural and economic processes. Essays on fifty-three built structures, written by different authors with different geographical background and different professional perspective, add up to multilayered account of the city's history and present. The texts include architectural analyses, political reflections, ethnographic observations and personal memories. Taken together, however, they allow for an understanding of the ambiguous and conflicting processes that are propelling urban development not only in Prishtina. The texts are supplemented by pictures and a visual essay by Italian photographer Filippo Romano."Prishtina in 53 Buildings" is more than a guide book for visitors or residents of the city. Buildings are not only the materialization of design principles or architectonic ideas, but the outcome of socio-economic processes. The built environment is constantly re-appropriated, re-interpreted and re-valuated as architects do not have the final say as to the meaning and the function of an edifice. By conceptualizing architecture as materialization of societal processes, "Prishtina in 53 Buildings" pushes beyond notions that assume an intrinsic and coherent 'logic' of cities. The editors Donika Luzhnica and Jonas König show that a polyphonic approach is more apposite to depict the often-contradictory trajectories of urban development. What holds true for cities in general, is in particular applicable for post-conflict cities like Prishtina. EditorsDonika Luzhnica is an architect based in Zurich and Prishtina, where she co-founded Ars Atelie. Her award-winning research on the reactivation of Gërmia, a former department store in Prishtina, was featured at Architecture Biennale 2021 in Venice. She was a guest editor of a special feature of the German architecture magazine Bauwelt on Prishtina's urban development and architecture. She currently works with CH Architekten in Zurich. Jonas König is a researcher at the Institute of Urban and Regional Planning at Technical University Berlin. He was a guest editor of two special features of the architecture magazine Bauwelt on architecture in Albania (2019) and Prishtina (2022) and has published in journals such as City, Kajet, Monu, and dérive on urban development issues in Southeast Europe.PhotographerFilippo Romano is a documentary and architecture photographer.

The dream of owning a home in the countryside has led to cities expanding more and more, growing together and destroying unspoilt nature. In addition, however, the need for affordable and attractive living space in cities is also increasing. Proximity to work and good infrastructure are clear advantages of city life. The »Penthouses for all« concept focuses on people's individual living wishes. It shows that sophisticated architecture can be affordable for all and is also possible in cities in the course of densification. The new living space for all is developed by building on flat roofs, which are plentiful in urban areas. Unfortunately, in the past the possibilities of targeted development of roofs remained largely unrecognised, especially in the newly built districts. So far, flat roofs here have mostly only been planted or used for energy generation. Here and there they are also built on later, but as a rule they remain unused for residential purposes. The situation is very different in many southern countries. There, it is a matter of course to use flat roofs for living and to include them in the planning right from the start. The book gives an insight into the inexhaustible possibilities of living on roofs. Numerous examples show that the dream of a home in the countryside can also be realised in the city. Not only small, low-cost roof houses are possible. With special »construction kits«, larger units can also be put together; alternative forms of living can be thought of and realised as well; nothing remains utopian. Ultimately, the aim is to make living in cities more attractive again in order to prevent urban sprawl and destruction of nature, and to give people back a home and identity even in the city. However, new building laws and development plans must create the prerequisites for this. So far, subsequent building on roofs is often prevented by building laws or rejected for aesthetic reasons. Further construction on roof areas is paralysed by the requirement to adapt to the existing building. Thus, only roof superstructures are created that are hardly recognisable as such or that take up the given monotonous design elements in order to adapt to the existing buildings.
Buildings provide tremendous insights into the character of imperialism, not least in the manner in which Western forms were spread across the globe. They reveal the projection of power and authority in colonised landscapes, as well the economic ambitions and social and cultural needs of colonial peoples in all types of colonies. They also represent a colonial order of social classes and racial divisions, together with the ways in which these were inflected through domestic living space, places of work and various aspects of cultural relations. They illuminate the desires of Europeans to indulge in cultural and religious proselytisation, encouraging indigenous peoples to adopt western norms. But the resistance of the supposedly subordinate people led to the invasion, adoption and adaptation of such buildings for a post-colonial world. The book will be vital reading for all students and scholars interested in the widest aspects of material culture.
Ordinary citizens fought City Hall to have a suicide barrier erected around North America's second most "popular" suicide magnet, the Bloor Viaduct over Toronto's Don Valley.
Opened in 1992, the Kunsthal in Rotterdam is a key design in the portfolio of Rem Koolhaas and OMA, the renowned firm Koolhaas cofounded in 1975. It is part of the Museumpark, a park also designed by OMA and the location of the Nederlands Architectuurinstituut NAi, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, and the Museum of Natural History. The Kunsthal's exhibition space is divided into three large exhibition halls and two smaller galleries. The building also houses an auditorium and a restaurant. This outstanding space for art is a prime destination for countless architecture fans every year, and is celebrated by Tibor Pataky, architect and architectural historian, in this inspiring book. He explains the history, the programmatic background, and the cultural references of the design, which has been adapted several times. He also places it in the context of OMA's work of the 1980s and the intellectual environment of Deconstructivism. Eight captivating series of illustrations-historic and new photographs, plans and documents from OMA's archive, and other images-focus on the structure's outstanding qualities and its embedding within the park. A set of new plans, newly drawn for this book, illustrate the highlights of OMA's design. The volume is a hugely attractive tribute to one of the most significant works of post-WWII architecture in Europe.
"Sites of International Memory interrogates the political and cultural legacies of the recent international past in conceptualizations of nationhood and identity today in the material and ideological sites of international memory. It maps an international past that was often simultaneously imperial and national, cosmopolitan and global, and that is now is sometimes self-consciously remembered, or more often actively forgotten"--
