Proto-Habitat is a transcript of conversations, visits, essays, photographs, paintings objects, and architectures exploring different cultures of dwelling as well as the associated imageries and means of production. Proto-Habitat is both a theoretical and a practical (built) experiment to explore ways of dwelling that are closer to contemporary lifestyles. The idea is to broaden collective representation to include environmentally responsible modes of existence and prioritizing conditions of habitability over questions of production. The book builds on research initially carried out at the French Academy in Rome - Villa Medici, the exhibition at arc en rêve, Collection Lambert, and Grand Hornu, and the construction of Proto-Habitat (Bordeaux, Chamonix, Clermont Ferrand), protoCAMPO (Rome), and SOLARproto (Almere). Flavien Menu is an architect whose practice combines research, building, and sustainable develop-ment.
In 2023, the new Maison de la Chine was opened as part of the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris (CIUP), the French capital's famous campus of student residencies founded in 1925. Designed by Beijing-based Atelier Feichang Jianzhu (Atelier FCJZ) and realized in collaboration with the French architecture firm Coldefy, the building continues the tradition of national pavilions within the CIUP. The Maison de la Chine's design bears the DNA of traditional Chinese architecture, yet Atelier FCJZ also clearly acknowledges its inspiration from Le Corbusier. This book documents the building and its design process in rich detail through sketches, drawings, plans, and photographs. Architectural historian and curator Martino Stierli places the Maison de la Chine in the context of the evolution of contemporary Chinese architecture. Yung Ho Chang and Yishi Cheng, respectively the founding partner of and project architect at Atelier FCJZ, discuss conceptual and technical aspects of the design. The volume is completed by American critic Ariel Genadt, whose essay relates the building to the site's extraordinary history and the culture within which it was created.
In its early decades, the Ethiopian capital, founded in 1886, witnessed a very specific form of architecture. At the beginning of the East African country's first urbanisation process, a mixture of vernacular knowledge and a new cosmopolitan mindset led to an architectural type that local professionals refer to as the 'Addis Ababa Style': Pavilion-like buildings of different sizes, made of stone, earth, and wood, characterised by expressive pinched roofs, generous verandas with curtain walls, and a high degree of detailing. Today, those graceful, appropriate, and nature-based buildings are under threat of being swallowed up due to shortsighted economic interests. In cooperation with the Institute for Architecture in Addis Ababa (EiABC), architects of Berlin's Technical University studied this typology with regard to its embeddedness in local resources, climatic conditions, and craftsmanship. As such, they employed the 'Addis Ababa House' as a case study to discuss the possibility of a non-industrial building type that reflects the desire for a cosmopolitan urban life.
The lavish five-volume set of Food for Architects is dedicated to the buildings and cooking of the renowned Zurich-based firm Steib Gmür Geschwentner Kyburz Partners. As enthusiastic housing designers, they have been searching for both the perfect floor plan and the perfect spaghetti for three decades. Volume 1 of this first comprehensive monograph on the firm's work brings together brief personal texts on the various types of rooms in a house or apartment as well as other aspects of living. Volume 2 offers insights into the evolution and design methods of Steib Gmür Geschwentner Kyburz Partners, documenting as well 65 key buildings and projects from their portfolio. Volume 3 features floor plans of a total of 168 furnished apartments with concise comments, interspersed with recipes for 12 spaghetti dishes. In a photo essay, volume 4 introduces the inhabitants of 11 apartments from various realized buildings, who also speak about their homes in brief interviews. The dessert of this five-course menu is the concluding volume 5, featuring a conversation with the firm's four partners-Jakob Steib, Patrick Gmür, Michael Geschwentner, and Matthias Kyburz-as they discuss topics that are key to their architectural work.

With volume one winning first place the Listowel Writer's Week Nilsson Local Heritage Award, this is the second of a three-volume series on Dublin Castle and the archaeological excavations carried out there between 1961 and 1987. Volume 2 focuses on the Viking-age archaeology that pre-dates the foundation of the Anglo-Norman castle. Significant evidence for Viking-age habitation, including post-and-wattle houses, was uncovered as part of the first archaeological excavation to be carried out in Dublin, at the Cross Block in 1961-2. Further evidence of habitation was excavated at the areas of the Cork Tower and Powder Tower in 1985-7, with elements of the eastern defenses of the Viking-age town recorded within the footprint of the latter tower. The extensive collection of artifacts discovered during the excavations and the analysis of environmental samples, faunal and human remains and metalworking debris throw much light on everyday living conditions and craft activity within the Viking town. Placing the findings of these excavations within their national and international context, specialist contributions by many experts ensure that this publication contributes significantly to an understanding of early Dublin.

Synopsis: This literature proposes new ideas and innovations that consider the ultimate Beescape for Meliponaries, with bee comfort at the top of the list of considerations. Thermal comfort is a term of grave concern regarding conservation in Meliponiculture. Often enough, enthusiastic beekeepers are not overly worried about heat dissipation, especially during the summers on the fringes of the tropics. Heat waves in the tropics may leave beekeepers anxious about the stability of the colony's health and population growth. The existing colonies may see the population dwindling rather than growing. We also look at earth tremors, if not earthquakes, in the "ring of fire" zone in The Malay Archipelago and Wallacea regions. Flooding threats in Southeast Asia and Typhoons in the Oceanic Philippines are troubling. Recent reports on landslides leave affected beekeepers very distressed.Addressing these disastrous events and the potential threats is one of the aims of this book. We have scoured the region and examined how different cultures attempt to mitigate their respective regions' drastic and extreme weather. Out of these examples and data collection, we provide a gallery of designs on relevant bee housing that may impact such mitigation that may apply to the relevant type of disaster frequently faced in each region. The reader is afforded a choice of constructive possibilities depending on the availability of materials, site topography, and geography of their Meliponary location.

Research on multifamily housing and its impact on the daily lives of ordinary people, from a leading Canadian architectural firmThese four slipcased volumes build on 5468796 Architecture's housing manifesto "Add via Edit: A Decade in Housing", the symposium "platform.MIDDLE: Architecture for Housing the 99%" hosted at Illinois Institute of Technology and examples by practice-related offices. The work and research of the Winnipeg-based firm 5468796 Architecture (described as "one of the most talented young design firms worldwide") has focused on "missing middle" and midrise housing in its many forms and ownership models, from refugee and social housing to market-rate condominiums. With the condominium boom taking hold across North America, the number of residential units passing across architects' desks is unprecedented. As a result of the typology's inherent repetition and potentially banal program--as well as the private sector's pursuit of profit, often at the expense of quality and livability--the margin in which architecture can operate is very narrow. Architects must respond to the challenges of this typology with the rigor it deserves.
