Throughout the 20th century, there were periods when there was urgent demand for housing to accommodate the rapidly increasing population (or rebuilt following wars). Driven primarily by the need to provide housing as cheaply and efficiently as possible, the ideas developed by the early Modernists have informed housing schemes worldwide. Today, in the context of a very different urban landscape, architects optimistic about high-density living are revisiting these seminal designs as they seek to develop their own solutions to our current housing crisis. Chronologically ordered, this book provides a unique survey of over 80 seminal housing projects from across Europe which were constructed during the 20th century. Together with concise contextual history and analysis, each housing study includes carefully redrawn context plan, plans and sections (some also include elevations) which are presented in a way that makes them readily comparable. Beginning with Parker & Unwin's Hampstead Garden Suburb (1907), case studies include housing by Aalto, Le Corbusier, Moretti, Markelius, Tá vora, Atelier 5, Utzon, Stirling & Gowan, Ungers, Brown, Rossi, Siza Vieira, Valle, Nouvel and MVRDV.

"After inheriting a seventeenth-century Tuscan villa, Ned Lambton and his wife, Marina, lovingly restored the estate as a retreat for family and friends. With newly commissioned photographs by Simon Upton, Lambton brings to life the rich history of the villa, its redecoration, its raucous history, and, above all else, the dream of owning and renovating a Tuscan villa. Located just outside Siena, Italy, Villa Cetinale stands amid vineyards, silver olive groves, and wooded hills that have remained largely untouched since the late seventeenth century, when Cardinal Flavio Chigi, a nephew of Pope Alexander VII, expanded what was a modest farmhouse into the villa we see today. Cetinale was acquired from the Chigi dynasty in 1978, by the charismatic Lord Antony Lambton, the author's father, who cultivated the villa's reputation as one of the most beautiful and glamourous homes in Italy, laying out new gardens and hosting fashionable figures from England (Princess Margaret, Prince Charles, Mick Jagger, Rupert Everett, Tony Blair, and Kate Moss). The villa has undergone major refurbishment--all without altering the original character of the house--with restoration work carried out by Bolko von Schweinichen, a Florentine architect known for his reverent handling of historic buildings, and interiors by London decorator Camilla Guinness, a lifelong friend of the family."--

"Prishtina in 53 Buildings" draws a multifaceted portrait of Kosovo's capital city by using architecture as a prism to understand political, cultural and economic processes. Essays on fifty-three built structures, written by different authors with different geographical background and different professional perspective, add up to multilayered account of the city's history and present. The texts include architectural analyses, political reflections, ethnographic observations and personal memories. Taken together, however, they allow for an understanding of the ambiguous and conflicting processes that are propelling urban development not only in Prishtina. The texts are supplemented by pictures and a visual essay by Italian photographer Filippo Romano."Prishtina in 53 Buildings" is more than a guide book for visitors or residents of the city. Buildings are not only the materialization of design principles or architectonic ideas, but the outcome of socio-economic processes. The built environment is constantly re-appropriated, re-interpreted and re-valuated as architects do not have the final say as to the meaning and the function of an edifice. By conceptualizing architecture as materialization of societal processes, "Prishtina in 53 Buildings" pushes beyond notions that assume an intrinsic and coherent 'logic' of cities. The editors Donika Luzhnica and Jonas König show that a polyphonic approach is more apposite to depict the often-contradictory trajectories of urban development. What holds true for cities in general, is in particular applicable for post-conflict cities like Prishtina. EditorsDonika Luzhnica is an architect based in Zurich and Prishtina, where she co-founded Ars Atelie. Her award-winning research on the reactivation of Gërmia, a former department store in Prishtina, was featured at Architecture Biennale 2021 in Venice. She was a guest editor of a special feature of the German architecture magazine Bauwelt on Prishtina's urban development and architecture. She currently works with CH Architekten in Zurich. Jonas König is a researcher at the Institute of Urban and Regional Planning at Technical University Berlin. He was a guest editor of two special features of the architecture magazine Bauwelt on architecture in Albania (2019) and Prishtina (2022) and has published in journals such as City, Kajet, Monu, and dérive on urban development issues in Southeast Europe.PhotographerFilippo Romano is a documentary and architecture photographer. The dream of owning a home in the countryside has led to cities expanding more and more, growing together and destroying unspoilt nature. In addition, however, the need for affordable and attractive living space in cities is also increasing. Proximity to work and good infrastructure are clear advantages of city life. The »Penthouses for all« concept focuses on people's individual living wishes. It shows that sophisticated architecture can be affordable for all and is also possible in cities in the course of densification. The new living space for all is developed by building on flat roofs, which are plentiful in urban areas. Unfortunately, in the past the possibilities of targeted development of roofs remained largely unrecognised, especially in the newly built districts. So far, flat roofs here have mostly only been planted or used for energy generation. Here and there they are also built on later, but as a rule they remain unused for residential purposes. The situation is very different in many southern countries. There, it is a matter of course to use flat roofs for living and to include them in the planning right from the start. The book gives an insight into the inexhaustible possibilities of living on roofs. Numerous examples show that the dream of a home in the countryside can also be realised in the city. Not only small, low-cost roof houses are possible. With special »construction kits«, larger units can also be put together; alternative forms of living can be thought of and realised as well; nothing remains utopian. Ultimately, the aim is to make living in cities more attractive again in order to prevent urban sprawl and destruction of nature, and to give people back a home and identity even in the city. However, new building laws and development plans must create the prerequisites for this. So far, subsequent building on roofs is often prevented by building laws or rejected for aesthetic reasons. Further construction on roof areas is paralysed by the requirement to adapt to the existing building. Thus, only roof superstructures are created that are hardly recognisable as such or that take up the given monotonous design elements in order to adapt to the existing buildings.

A beautifully illustrated exploration of the impact of Chinese and Japanese material culture on the historic houses and gardens of Britain and Ireland. The art and ornament of China and Japan have had a deep impact in the British Isles. From the seventeenth century onwards, the design and decoration of interiors and gardens in Britain and Ireland was profoundly influenced by the importation of Chinese and Japanese luxury goods, while domestic designers and artisans created their own fanciful interpretations of 'oriental' art. Those hybrid styles and tastes have traditionally been known as chinoiserie and japonisme, but they can also be seen as elements of the wider and still very relevant phenomenon of orientalism, or the way the West sees the East.Illustrated with a wealth of new photography and published in association with the National Trust, Borrowed Landscapes is an engaging survey of orientalism in the Trust's historic houses and gardens across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Drawing on new research, Emile de Bruijn demonstrates how elements of Chinese and Japanese culture were simultaneously desired and misunderstood, dismembered and treasured, idealised and caricatured.

Since antiquity, Italy has been the origin of key themes of Western architecture and culture, many of which have evolved in exemplary and universally valid ways. Many of these continue to provide an inspiring frame of reference even today. Emulating the tradition and itinerary of the classic Grand Tour followed by European aristocrats, this comprehensive and visually appealing book takes a nuanced look at Italy today. Using the aspect of housing as a hub, it offers new narratives and positions on current issues and developments that are also highly relevant outside Italy. In the format of a graphic and textual atlas, the volume explores Italy at various scales. Zooming in and out of themes, cities, and regions, it allows for associative and nonlinear comprehension and reflection. Housing is examined as a complex construct, acted upon by diverging interests and needs as well as historical legacies. The spatial aspect of living, with its huge impact on the limited resources of land and the landscape, is the starting point for the proposals and strategies the book offers. Its audience reaches beyond the professional architecture community, aiming at anyone with an interest in the much-debated topic of (affordable) housing or in 21st-century Italy.

Housing, the most omnipresent urban typology, both reflects social change and is the core of sustainable urban development. This is particularly true in times of war: to a significant extent, a healthy urban environment resists external dangers and destruction. Current day Ukrainian cities are an illustrative example of such resistance, but also of the opportunities for further building up resilience to damage in the residential built environments. This study examines the history and typologies of mass housing in Ukraine. It begins with the experimental buildings constructed in the early Soviet Ukraine, continues by looking at type projects from the Stalin era, as well as the serial type apartment blocks built during the reigns of Khrushchev and Brezhnev and in the late USSR. Finally, it showcases individually designed, yet also typical residential buildings from the turbo-capitalist period of the 1990s and 2000s.The authors construct a new narrative of housing in Ukraine, one that emancipates itself from the Russia-centric narrative of the Soviet past. They aim to write history of a specifically Ukrainian building tradition and contribute to embedding it in the context of all-European architectural history. This title is part of the "Histories of Ukrainian Architecture" programme initiated by DOM publishers in response to Russia's attack on Ukraine's sovereignty on 24 February 2022.
