The renowned lighting designer Ulrike Brandi explains this attitude with the words, "It's better to make the most of natural light from the start, rather than compensating with artificial light afterwards". The guideline Light Nature Architecture proves how essential, but also simple, it is to integrate natural light into architectural planning and thus into the design of healthy and pleasant living and working environments. This richly illustrated handbook is structured based on natural light phenomena and combines Ulrike Brandi's wealth of experience, theoretical principles, and design methods to create a reference work and source of inspiration. A compelling account of the luxury and splendor of Newport's nineteenth-century summer "cottages." In his latest contribution to America's architectural record, Michael C. Kathrens gives house enthusiasts a superbly visual and informative book on Newport's early resort architecture. The nineteenth century was an incredibly vibrant period in Newport, Rhode Island's, rich architectural history. Opulent private houses--or summer "cottages" as they were known--populated the seaside resort half a century before the rise of the European Revival behemoths of the late 1880s and 1890s. The luxury and splendor of many of these earlier homes often rivaled the sumptuousness of the later "Gilded Age" mansions. In the decades since 1835, when the first private house was built exclusively for seasonal use, scores of magnificent homes were commissioned by a burgeoning summer colony whose members were among America's wealthiest and most prominent families, including the Schermerhorns, Lorillards, Goelets, and Joneses. They built their summer residences in neighborhoods known today as Kay-Catherine-Old Beach Road, Bellevue Avenue, Ochre Point, and Ocean Drive, commissioning local talents such as George Champlin Mason Sr., Seth C. Bradford, and Dudley Newton as well as nationally renowned architects such as Richard Morris Hunt, McKim, Mead & White, and Peabody & Stearns. These exceptional houses showcased new architectural expressions and displayed the mastery of those who designed them. The scope of this volume--the prequel to Newport Villas: The Revival Styles, 1885-1935, Kathrens's first book on Newport residential architecture--extends beyond 1890, providing ownership histories of each of the thirty-six houses profiled, including Cannon Hill, Chateau-sur-Mer, Elm Court, Beaulieu, Land's End, the original Breakers, Ochre Point, and Chastellux as well as visual documentation of later renovations. Rare late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century interior images reflect a shift in fashion from the exuberant Victorian to a cleaner, more classical style that led to the Edwardian elegance of many of the later renovations by architects such as Horace Trumbauer, Ogden Codman Jr., and Francis L. V. Hoppin.Stunning archival and newly commissioned photography, architectural renderings, and floor plans aid in fully conveying the remarkable legacy of Newport's majestic cottages built before 1890, presented comprehensively for the first time.

A rich introduction to interior design in the 1980s and '90sPublished to accompany 80s Fashion, Design, & Graphic Design in France, an exhibition at the MAD in Paris, from October 2022 to April 2023Designers include: Ron Arad, ARC, Avant-Scène, François Bauchet, Andrea Branzi, David Gill, Michele De Lucchi, Tom Dixon, André Dubreuil, Sylvain Dubuisson, En Attendant les Barbares, Dan Friedman, Olivier Gagnère, Garouste & Bonetti, Michael Graves, Charles Jencks, Shiro Kuramata, Les Lalanne, Christian Liaigre, Ugo Marano, Javier Mariscal, Memphis, Alessandro Mendini, Juan Pablo Molyneux, Jasper Morrison, Patrick Elie Naggar, Néotù, Marc Newson, Gaetano Pesce, Andrée Putman, Pucci de Rossi, Eric Schmitt, Ettore Sottsass, Philippe Starck, Martin Szekely, Oscar Tusquets Blanca, Robert WilsonIn line with the works on decorators of the 1940s, '50s, '60s, and '70s, this book plunges us into the world of '80s and '90s. These have witnessed unprecedented experiments in the world of design and architecture. Composed of a rich introduction which gives a synoptic vision and 38 monographs that describe its many faces, this book makes an exceptionally creative period, and reveals through an abundant iconography, often unpublished, its formidable aesthetic richness.A new generation of designers stands out, among them Shiro Kuramata, Philippe Starck, Ron Arad, Bob Wilson, Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti. All regenerate creation by refusing the elitism of their predecessors and by favoring the use of new materials. Some turn to recovery, such as the Creative Salvage group, and offer inventive and provocative furniture thanks to welding and assembly. Others, gathered in Italy around Ettore Sottsass and Memphis, combine unexpected colors and patterns to the playful use of plastic laminate. Sliding until the end of the '90s, the achievements presented in this book mark the desire for a dialog between artistic references with a new relationship to the industrial aspect, at the dawn of the 21st century and its technological innovations.Text in English and French.

This publication comprehensively documents Heike Hanada's internationally acclaimed first work by means of drawings and photographs. The transformations during the construction process are excellently reflected in Andrew Albert's photographs. While the monumental cube positions itself precisely between the city and the landscape as an abstract, minimalist sculpture, it opens up unexpected vistas into the museum's topography on the inside via cascading staircases and voids. The relevance of all building materials conveys a consistent reminiscence of spacious industrial halls. They meet the most complex museum requirements remarkably well and thus simultaneously cite the workshop character of the founding of the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1919.

An inspiring collection of idiosyncratic interiors assembled around eclectic collections of objects with life and history The once rarified and exclusive world of antiques is bursting open thanks to a new generation of collectors. The New Antiquarians captures 17 of the spaces of these young connoisseurs, spirited interiors formed from unorthodox approaches to collecting and living with objects with history. Flouting conventions of good taste and revealing irreverent modes of decorating with antiques that echo the way we consume visual material today, they brazenly blend the historical and the contemporary, embrace anachronism and pastiche, employ serious knowledge with wit, and consider historical objects through the lens of present-day values. The New Antiquarians, featuring residences on both sides of the Atlantic, is an exuberant and accessible entry point into the once staid world of antiques with featured collectors of all stripes, with varied interests and resources. Collectors whose homes are featured include: Jared Austin; Emily Adams Bode Aujla & Aaron Aujla; Pablo Bronstein; Collier Calandruccio; Adam Charlap Hyman; Emily Eerdmans; Jared Frank; Andrew LaMar Hopkins; Kyle Marshall; Sean McNanney & Sinan Tuncay; Avril Nolan & Quy Nguyen; Camille Okhio; Jeremy K. This book aims to establish a community with attention to land use to achieve sustainable development and meet the needs of today's society. Urban planning depends on engineering, architectural, social and political pillars. It pursues this by proposing solutions, regulating environmental pollution and non-sustainable use of available resources. It showcases and even triggers further debate about connections between sustainable development, urban planning and technology in hopes of achieving sustainable development models that sustain urban expansion and shape cities that improve the overall quality of life. It views urban planning and development as vital fields that ensure the application of revolutionary approaches with new materials and processes incorporated in the most efficient manner.
