A lavish publication dedicated to Studio Arthur Casas, an acclaimed architecture and interior design practice based in São Paulo and New York.Arthur Casas has been one of the most prolific and innovative architects in Brazil since the late 1980s. His projects, the work of studios in both São Paulo and New York, can be seen in many of the world’s capitals, including Paris, Tokyo, London, and Lisbon.Studio Arthur Casas has completed more than 500 projects in different areas, including residential and commercial architecture, public competitions, and interior and product design, in both Brazil and abroad. The firm has gained recognition over the years and received numerous national and international honors such as a World Architecture Festival Award 2015 for the Brazilian Pavilion at the Milan Expo.Born and raised in São Paulo, Casas is strongly influenced by the city’s cosmopolitan spirit, something that inspires him to stay connected with the design community around the world. This ethos marks all of Casas’s work, which is defined by a very eclectic and ever-changing creativity. Casas strongly believes that architecture and interior design are inextricably related: he visualizes and embraces the spaces he designs on the condition of including the furniture that was created or chosen for them. Being a craftsman himself, he aims to create simple designs freed from all unnecessary details, imbued with artisanal qualities. The book features works by internationally acclaimed photographers Filippo Bamberghi, Fernando Guerra, winner of the Architectural Photographer of the Year 2015, and artist Mauro Restiffe.
The true soul of Martha's Vineyard, captured through the eyes of the talented artists and artisans who live thereVineyard Folk leads us on an intimate journey into the lives and inspirational places of some of the many talented artists who have always made up the larger community of Martha's Vineyard. The island, located just seven miles off the coast of Cape Cod, has a long history as geographic muse: Lillian Hellman and William Styron wrote overlooking the Vineyard Haven harbor, and Thomas Hart Benton-whose influence is still felt in island painters today-depicted the stone walls and winding roads of what is known as "up-island" more than a hundred years ago. Now, a new generation continues to build on these creative legacies, inspired by the island's ever-changing light, endless beaches, historic towns, and rolling fields. Vineyard Folk features painters, potters, poets, musicians, and actors, among many others, and the unique ways they work, live, and play. Above all, Vineyard Folk is a love letter to a remarkable island community. With personal interviews and candid photography, it is a collage of creativity, resilience, and hope. We celebrate these artists captured at this golden moment of time that may not last forever.

This book examines diverse ways of questioning, critiquing, and communicating site in the creative process of architecture, interior design, urban planning, and historical and cultural studies. The authors use the term site to connote a series of complex, established, or pre-existing conditions - a setting, an atmosphere, an area - to read, to interpret, to relate to, and to engage with, to redefine, or to create in relation to a design prompt. By acknowledging, accommodating, and empowering the physical, intellectual, and cultural characteristics of a site, students question its history, boundaries, posture, and situational aspects. Such inquiries promote a deeper appreciation of a site and thus help students to acknowledge its capacity to influence design throughout the iterative creative process.Understanding Site in Design Pedagogy adds to the body of literature on design studio pedagogy by presenting a collection of essays that challenge normative assumptions about what defines a site and its distinctive qualities. It poses a series of pedagogical questions for how sites might be diversely interpreted and introduced to design students. This study offers chapters that speak to site, memory, and lived experience; multi-scalar thinking about site; connecting to site through sensory phenomenon in interior design; alternate ways of engaging site for learning sustainable principles; and introducing unorthodox forms of site as the impetus to creative endeavours. It offers innovative approaches to scholarship of teaching and learning with respect to diverse readings of site within design education.

Paper and cardboard as sustainable building materials are currently the subject of research and testing. They can be produced inexpensively, are made from renewable raw materials and are completely recyclable. The focus of their application is on temporary uses, such as for transitional schools, emergency shelters or "microhomes". Properly protected from moisture and fire, the material proves to be durable. Design and aesthetic qualities are by no means neglected, as case studies by Pritzker Prize winner Shigeru Ban demonstrate: the Chengdu Elementary School, the Paper Concert Hall in Aquila or the Cardboard Cathedral in Christchurch all provided a sign of hope after devastating earthquakes. This introduction explains the technology of building with cardboard and paper and shows a wide range of examples.
