Lon Davis was one lucky young film buff. Growing up in Southern California in the 1970s, he was able to spend quality time with some of the celebrated residents of the Motion Picture Country Home in Los Angeles. His great-uncle, a screenwriter and bit player since the movies' earliest days, looked forward to Lon's visits; so did silent film comedienne Babe London and original Stooge Larry Fine. Blessed with exceptional recall and the ability to bring those memories vividly to life, Lon shares anecdotes that are, by turns, comical, touching, and tragic. They are also true, right down to the smallest detail. As he matured, Lon became acquainted with other members of the silent film community (including the Oscar-winning historian Kevin Brownlow) and chronicles their stories as well. And finally, Lon reveals an intensely personal account of falling in love with his best friend while searching for the elusive grave of the legendary W.C. Fields. As movie producer Pancho Kohner writes in the foreword: "Stumbling into Film History is more than a book; it's an unforgettable adventure through the golden age of cinema, with the best guide you could ask for." Lon Davis is an author, editor, documentarian, and lecturer on film history. His first published book was Silent Lives:100 Biographies of the Silent Film Era (2008). He and his wife, Debra Davis (née LaCoe), co-authored King of the Movies: Francis X. Bushman (2009), and Ma and Pa Kettle on Film (2021). In addition to editing two hundred academic books on the performing arts, Lon and Debra released two volumes of essays: Stooges Among Us (2008) and CHASE! A Tribute to the Keystone Cops (2020). Debra also published a roman à clef entitled Flirtation Act: The Story of a Boy, a Girl, and Vaudeville (2016). Lon and Debra's documentary film This is Francis X. Bushman (2021) is available on Blu-ray from Flicker Alley. Lon's latest book, Stumbling Into Film History, is comprised of newly written and revised essays detailing his experiences with various denizens of early Hollywood. IT WAS A DIFFERENT TIME... I was seven when I sat enthralled in a dark theatre watching The Land That Time Forgot. Three years later I was on a car roof watching a double bill of The People That Time Forgot and At the Earth's Core, in our town's last drive-in. I watched Motel Hell in that same drive-in three years later and it kept me awake for weeks after. These were just some of the films of legendary director KEVIN CONNOR and there would be more. His work was the great stuff of late summer night HBO. Explore how these classics were made from Connor's own accounts and thrill to a time in filmmaking when things were fun, films were fun and we had a good time with dinosaurs, beautiful primitive women and fantastical creatures. An era that time forgot... B Harrison Smith is the filmmaker known for The Fields, Camp Dread, Death House, The Special and Where the Scary Things Are. He is the author of The Making of Leprechaun, Making the Last Dinosaur and the personal history of horror with This Time It's Personal.

"A guide to the horror movie genre for people too afraid to watch horror movies, including plot summaries and key scene descriptions for twenty-five influential films, as well as analysis of each film's role in the genre and in pop culture"--
Once dismissed as a fading genre with little to say to contemporary audiences, the giant monster movie roared back to life in the new millennium. In one of modern cinema's most surprising turnarounds, a wave of 21st-century kaiju films has delivered exciting and thought-provoking viewing to global audiences. In a variety of works that range from action-packed CGI spectacles to more personal, introspective productions commenting on real-world issues of the day, the new millennium has witnessed some of the most intriguing films in any genre, including movies from such acclaimed directors such as Guillermo del Toro, Bong Joon-ho and Peter Jackson. This book takes a sober, multidimensional look at the new class of giant monster movies. It examines the making of these films and their sometimes-obscure meanings. It also covers efforts to reinvent storied kaiju characters from the past, including Godzilla and King Kong, and to transform the genre with movies such as Cloverfield, The Mist, Colossal, and Pacific Rim that feature all-new creatures.
"The screenplay for the cult classic film by the legendary writer-director returns to print in time for its thirtieth anniversary. Pulp Fiction is arguably the most influential American film of the 1990s. Winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the 1994 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and later selected by the Library of Congress for preservation on the National Film Registry, Quentin Tarantino's second film was immediately hailed as a masterpiece ("a triumphant, cleverly disorienting journey through a demimonde that springs entirely from Mr. Tarantino's ripe imagination" -Janet Maslin, The New York Times). Now, on the heels of Tarantino's bestselling forays into both the novel and essay form, this iconic screenplay returns to print in a 30th anniversary edition"--
"A highly illustrated analysis of fictional sporting events from twenty-six popular movies, including imagined tickets to the competitions, play maps, and other ephemera"--
"Each of the trials detailed in this book dominated the world's news media and gripped public attention. After examining the evidence, if you had been a member of the jury, what would have been your verdict? Guilty? Or Not Guilty?"--Publisher provided description.
When Carole Lombard was tragically killed in a plane crash on January 16, 1942, she was 33 years old and had been a film actress for almost 20 years, yet her best work probably still lay ahead. She had reached a career high point, earning praise for her talents as a comedienne as well as a dramatic actress. As well liked as she was on screen, she was equally popular off screen, known for being witty, uninhibited and a great party-giver. Blonde and beautiful, she reigned as the queen of Hollywood when she married Clark Gable, its king. This book offers a thorough examination of her too-short life and provides information about her 78 films, including cast and credits, synopses, reviews and comments. Photographs from her life and films complete the work.

This book studies American science fiction films depicting invasions of the USA and Earth by extra- terrestrials within the context of imperialism from 1950-2020. It shows how such films imagine America and its allies as objects of colonial control. This trope enables filmmakers to explore the ethics of American interventionism abroad either by defending the status quo or by questioning interventionism. The study shows how these films comment on American domestic hegemonic practices regarding racial or gender hierarchies, as well as hegemonic practices abroad. Beginning with the Cold War consensus in the 1950s, the study shows how hegemony at home and abroad promotes division in the culture.

This book explores early new critical debates about intention, tracing how and why intention was dismissed across much humanities scholarship, and how it can be revisited and made relevant as a key formative, evaluative, and ethical concept. The author argues that the academic disinterest in intention occurred simultaneously as genre criticism and later the rhetorical interest in genre came into its own. Genre became a way to simultaneously elide and naturalize intention. The book elaborates on the pedagogical, ethical, and empirical consequences naturalizing intention through genre has had for rhetorical studies and it offers a new term, ¿curations¿ to identify discursive forms, actions, and intentions working simultaneously. Finally, he also examines the gap between the humanities and STEM fields and shows specific ways scientists and engineers have called for the humanities to become more invested in intention as both a critical and an operational concept. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of discourse studies and critical discourse analysis, rhetoric and professional communication, including those in fields such as medicine, engineering, STS and business studies.
Frank J. Wetta and Martin A. Novelli's Abraham Lincoln and Women in Film investigates how depictions of women in Hollywood motion pictures helped forge the myth of Lincoln. Exploring female characters' backstories, the political and cultural climate in which the films appeared, and the contest between the moviemakers' imaginations and the varieties of historical truth, Wetta and Novelli place the women in Lincoln's life at the center of the study, including his mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln; his stepmother, Sarah Bush Lincoln; his lost loves, Ann Rutledge and Mary Owens; and his wife and widow, Mary Todd Lincoln. Later, while inspecting Lincoln's legacy, they focus on the 1930s child actor Shirley Temple and the 1950s movie star Marilyn Monroe, who had a well-publicized fascination with the sixteenth president. Wetta and Novelli's work is the first to deal extensively with the women in Lincoln's life, both those who interacted with him personally and those appearing on screen. It is also among the first works to examine how scholarly and popular biography influenced depictions of Lincoln, especially in film.
