In the 1990s animation boom, The Ren & Stimpy Show stood supreme. Through draftsmanship, charismatic voices, irreverent sight gags, crass humor, and stellar character acting, animation's most talented and disturbed artists created an entity for the Nickelodeon cable network that pulled the art form out of a 25-year rut. The world has never been quite the same since - and we're eternally grateful! Now you too can join the rollercoaster ride that is the fascinating, insane real-life story of art, money, and ego that gave birth to Ren Höek and Stimpson J. Cat. History Eraser Buttons need not apply. No stone has been unturned, no magic nose goblin unpicked, in this extensively detailed history of the show that defined a generation and changed an entire medium. Fully revised and bursting with new information, interviews, and illustrations-it's everything you wanted to know about Ren & Stimpy - but were afraid to ask! ________________________________________ "A compelling cautionary tale of rags-to-riches success in Hollywood, Thad Komorowski's book documents the entire story behind Nickelodeon's first cartoon hit, The Ren & Stimpy Show, utilizing extensive interviews with the program's key players - including the cartoonists, network executives, and voice actors - justifying the show's important role in the recent history of animation. A great read." - Jerry Beck, Animation Historian and Co-Founder of Cartoon Brew
"The single most illuminating work on America and the movies" (The Kansas City Star): the story of how a shy boy from Chicago crashed Hollywood and created the world's first multimedia entertainment empire?one that shapes American popular culture to this day. When Walter Elias Disney moved to Hollywood in 1923, the twenty-one-year-old cartoonist seemed an unlikely businessman?and yet within less than two decades, he'd transformed his small animation studio into one of the most successful and beloved brands of the twentieth century. But behind Disney's boisterous entrepreneurial imagination and iconic characters lay regressive cultural attitudes that, as The Walt Disney Company's influence grew, began to not simply reflect the values of midcentury America but actually shape the country's character. Lauded as "one of the best studies ever done on American popular culture" (Stephen J. Whitfield, Professor of American Civilization at Brandeis University), Richard Schickel's The Disney Version explores Walt Disney's extraordinary entrepreneurial success, his fascinatingly complex character, and?decades after his death?his lasting legacy on America.

Coraline (Henry Selick, 2009) is stop-motion studio LAIKA's feature-length debut based on the popular children's novel by British author Neil Gaiman. Heralding a revival in global interest in stop-motion animation, the film is both an international cultural phenomenon and a breakthrough moment in the technological evolution of the craft. This open access collection brings together an international group of practitioners and scholars to examine Coraline's place in animation history and culture, dissect its politics, and unpack its role in the technological and aesthetic development of its medium. More broadly, it celebrates stop motion as a unique and enduring artform while embracing its capacity to evolve in response to cultural, political, and technological changes, as well as shifting critical and audience demands. Divided into three sections, this volume's chapters situate Coraline within an interconnected network of historical, industrial, discursive, theoretical, and cultural contexts. They place the film in conversation with the medium's aesthetic and technological history, broader global intellectual and political traditions, and questions of animation reception and spectatorship. In doing so, they invite recognition - and appreciation - of the fact that Coraline occupies many liminal spaces at once. It straddles the boundary between children's entertainment and traditional 'adult' genres, such as horror and thriller. It complicates a seemingly straight(forward) depiction of normative family life with gestures of queer resistance. Finally, it marks a pivotal point in stop-motion animation's digital turn. Following the film's recent tenth anniversary, the time is right to revisit its production history, evaluate its cultural and industry impact, and celebrate its legacy as contemporary stop-motion cinema's gifted child. As the first book-length academic study of this contemporary animation classic, this volume serves as an authoritative introduction and a primary reference on the film for scholars, students, practitioners, and animation fans. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com.
With the popularity of Pokemon still far from waning, Japanese animation, known as anime to its fans, has a firm hold on American pop culture. However, anime is much more than children's cartoons. It runs the gamut from historical epics to sci-fi sexual thrillers. Often dismissed as fanciful entertainment, anime is actually quite adept at portraying important social and cultural issues like alienation, gender inequality, and teenage angst. This book investigates the ways that anime presents these issues in an in-depth and sophisticated manner, uncovering the identity conflicts, fears over rapid technological advancement, and other key themes present in much of Japanese animation.
Lotte Reiniger (1899-1981) is a renowned animation pioneer and silhouette artist. The first to this date preserved feature-length animation film The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926), the construction of the first multi-plane camera and the collaboration with avant-garde artists have secured her place in animation history. Beyond Prince Achmed shows the richness there is still to be discovered about Reiniger and her art. It introduces discourses through which the established perception of this animation pioneer, her contribution to the history of animation and her persisting influence on new generations of animation artists and popular culture can be re-framed and expanded.Topics explored include Reiniger's public image and creation of a distinct brand; her interest in psychoanalysis and the role of the shadow for the interpretation of her silhouette animation films; the silhouette as a specific form in Reiniger's artistic work and writing; the development of her aesthetic language during the 1920s in the context of Orientalism; Reiniger's role in British film culture of the 1930s; and her influence on artists such as Bruno J. Böttge and contemporary animators from Asia. A wealth of artistic and written material by Reiniger from various archives enriches the collection.
