Throughout her history, the ballerina has been perceived as the embodiment of beauty and perfection - she is the feminine ideal. But the reality is another story. Beginning with the earliest ballerinas, who often led double lives as concubines, Deirdre Kelly goes on to review the troubled lives of 19th-century ballerinas, who lived in poverty and worked under torturous and even life-threatening conditions. In the 20th century, George Balanchine created a contradictory ballet culture that simultaneously idealized and oppressed ballerinas, and many of his dancers suffered from anorexia and bulimia or underwent cosmetic surgery to achieve the ideal ethereal form. At the beginning of the 21st century, ballerinas are still underpaid, vulnerable to arbitrary discrimination and dismissal, and expected to bear pain stoically - but much of this is beginning to change. As Kelly examines the lives of some of the world's best ballerinas, she argues for a rethinking of the world's most graceful dance form - a rethinking that would position the ballerina at its heart, where she belongs. Highlighting the work of such great ballerinas such as Anna Pavlova, Isadora Duncan, Suzanne Farrell, Gelsey Kirkland, and Evelyn Hart Kelly illustrates how the world of ballet is slowly evolving.

Like many artists of his generation, George Barbier was fascinated by the work of the dancer Vaslav Nijinsky, and in this book Barbier pays homage to the great dancer in the form of twelve fantastical colour designs which convey the impression Nijinsky produced in his dancing. Among the works illustrated are Sheherazade, Narcisse, Petrushka, L'Après-midi d'un faune, Carnaval, Spectre de la rose, Cléopatre, and Le Pavillon d'Armide. The plates are preceded by a short text in French by Francis de Miomandre.First printed in 1913, the book has never before been reprinted.
This is a story of a young girl from a small town with a big dream that took her to Juilliard, Broadway, summer stock, the stage of the Metropolitan Opera and the Santa Fe Opera, and introduced her to her husband William Zeckendorf Jr. Her memoir overflows with the glamour of a life lived among the famous figures of mid-century New York society and the grit necessary to succeed in the professional world of dance. Fascinated by art and architecture, the vivacious ballerina Nancy Zeckendorf became a formidable development partner with her husband and a philanthropic leader in the performing arts-her fundraising ability is an art form unto itself. "I love hardware stores and tools," she said of her common-sense approach to construction projects. Indeed, Nancy was a guiding force in the expansion of the Santa Fe Opera, the Lensic Performing Arts Center, and the premier community of Los Miradores where she lives now in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The more knowledge the dancer - and the dancer's parents and teachers - has about the body as an instrument of artistic expression, the better the dancer. Inside Ballet Technique introduces the reader to the natural anatomical laws governing human movement and body mechanics, and relates them directly to the dancer's acquisition of technique in the daily ballet class. Easy to read, simply and clearly illustrated, Inside Ballet Technique provides a fresh perspective on the basic tenets of classical ballet, answering many questions that commonly persist in the minds of career-track students and dancers.
