Anmerkung der Komponistin:"Dieses Stück wurde 2006 (für Violoncello und Klavier) für eine Ausstellung geschrieben, die Künstlern gewidmet war, die an Schizophrenie leiden. Grundlage des Stücks ist eine Abfolge von vier Akkorden, sehr schlicht und minimalistisch. Ein Mensch mit Schizophrenie hört Stimmen, die sehr störend sein können; es gibt eine Sehnsucht nach Stille. Geburtstag von Ursula Mamlok (1923 ¿ 2016) gibt Boosey & Hawkes Bote & Bock in Zusammenarbeit mit der Dwight und Ursula Mamlok Stiftung eine Reihe zu Lebzeiten der Komponistin nicht publizierter Werke aus dem Nachlass heraus. Alariana aus dem Jahr 1985 ist in vielerlei Hinsicht ein ¿typischer Mamlok¿: Die aus Bläsern und Streichern in entfernten Registern gemischte Besetzung sorgt für einen transparenten Klang, der Satz ist luftig polyphon, und die fünf aphoristisch kurzen, zusammen circa sieben Minuten dauernden Sätze folgen klassischen Satztypen in kontrastreichem Wechsel der Charaktere.
