Hey there! Did you know that some people think "fart" is a gross or even impolite word? Well, I've given "fart" a lot of thought and I'm here to help! I've come up with some other choices so that when you are out and about and someone let's it out, you do NOT say "fa--!" Phew! I almost said it again.Do you have a favorite word that you use instead of "f---?"

This volume explores how Jansenism was transmitted into Central European literatures and how it shaped the concept of literature in the region. It investigates how and through which translators, publishers and patrons Jansenist ideas, texts and readings arrived in this area; how, to what extent, in what form and with what transfers these ideas impacted literature. The authors connect research methodologies that have traditionally been used separately from each other. Another objective is to systematize and critically evaluate earlier results while also revealing new sources. The volume puts moralist and anthropological discourses of Jansenist influence into a new perspective, with an emphasis on their links to literary and cultural history, aesthetics and the history of ideas.

This book introduces the origin, development and current state of American nature writing. It organizes many representative authors and works of American nature writing into such categories as the influence of transcendentalism, the wilderness complex, the English cultural heritage, female writers, land ethics, and refuge of the heart. As a multi-disciplinary field combining language, literature, philosophy, ecology, botany, and ethics, American nature writing seeks to tell intimate personal experiences of places and explore the connection between human spirituality and nature in a particular place, blending natural history with the history of human development. These are the focus of this book. It analyzes key representative writers of American nature writing such as Thoreau, Emerson, Burroughs, Muir, Abbey, Leopold and Williams, and their works and respective personal relationships with nature, offering the reader a fascinating insight into American nature writing.

Have you ever wondered whether we are alone in the universe, or if life forms on other planets might exist? If they do exist, how might their languages have evolved? Could we ever understand them, and indeed learn to communicate with them? This highly original, thought-provoking book takes us on a fascinating journey over billions of years, from the formation of galaxies and solar systems, to the appearance of planets in the habitable zones of their parent stars, and then to how biology and, ultimately, human life arose on our own planet. It delves into how our brains and our language developed, in order to explore the likelihood of communication beyond Earth and whether it would evolve along similar lines. In the process, fascinating insights from the fields of astronomy, evolutionary biology, palaeoanthropology, neuroscience and linguistics are uncovered, shedding new light on life as we know it on Earth, and beyond.

The book offers a new perspective on the emergence and spread of Indo-Aryan in North India. Based on the analysis of more than 200 Indo-Aryan languages and dialects, it proves that there was more than just one immigration of Indo-Aryan speakers to North India. This left clear marks on the modern Indo-Aryan languages. When the Vedic-speaking Indo-Aryans arrived in northern India, there were already speakers of other Indo-Aryan dialects that were slightly more archaic than Vedic. Traces of these somewhat more archaic dialects are mainly found in peripheral Indo-Aryan languages between the Himalayas and the Hindu Kush. They are therefore called outer languages, while the descendants of Vedic and Classical Sanskrit (e.g. Pali and Hindi) are called inner languages. Outer and inner languages differ not only in terms of archaicity, but they have also developed differently, especially in phonology. The book also addresses the question of the linguistic situation in North India before the arrival of the first Indo-Aryans. Again, it is these peripheral languages, albeit along with many small Tibeto-Burmese Himalayan languages, that have preserved the richest linguistic data showing that prehistoric North India was dominated by Austro-Asiatic languages before the arrival of the Indo-Aryans.

«At long last, English-speaking readers now have access to the most comprehensive and insightful account of the vision that inspires the rapprochement and lived interreligious dialogue between Christians and Muslims inaugurated in the life and thought of the late Paolo Dall¿Oglio S.J., and the interreligious community of al-Khalil in the monastery of Mar Musa in Syria. This book is «must reading» for all of us engaged in the dialogue between Muslims and Christians in the spirit of Nostra Aetate and the life and legacy of Louis Massignon.»(Rev. Dr. Sidney H Griffith, Catholic University, Washington D. C.)In Love with Islam, Believing in Jesus is a translation of Fr. Paolo Dall¿Ogliös seminal book Amoureux de l¿Islam, croyant en Jésus, written in collaboration with Églantine Gabaix-Hialé.In the book Fr. Paolo, an Italian born Jesuit who made Syria and the Monastery of Deir Mar Musa his adopted home, explains his affection for Islam and his hope for the Church and Christians to engage in more fruitful dialogue with Muslims through the sharing of everyday life. The ecumenical community dedicated to dialogue welcomes thousands of visitors from all nationalities throughout the year. With his thirty years of experience and commitment, Fr. Paolo takes a position on the relationship between the Church and Islam. Questions addressed in this book include, how to live together and what is the point of living together? How can the mission of the Christian faith take place in a Muslim environment? And what is the theological value for Christians of Muhammad¿s prophecy? In his bold vision of Christian-Muslim dialogue, Fr Paolo explicitly renounces both the polemical approach and the excessively diplomatic approach, rather advocating for a «performative theology» based on radical Christian hospitality, guided by the Gospel as its source, and tending towards a final harmony inspired by the Holy Spirit and common eschatological anticipation.

What do 'bimbo,' 'glitch,' 'savvy,' and 'shtick' all have in common? They are all expressions used in informal American English that have been taken from other languages. This pioneering book provides a comprehensive description of borrowings in informal American English, based on a large database of citations from thousands of contemporary sources, including the press, film, and TV. It presents the United States as a linguistic 'melting pot,' with words from a diverse range of languages now frequently appearing in the lexicon. It examines these borrowings from various perspectives, including discussions of terms, donors, types, changes, functions, and themes. It also features an alphabetical glossary of 1,200 representative expressions, defined and illustrated by 5,500 usage examples, providing an insightful and practical resource for readers. Combining scholarship with readability, this book is a fascinating storehouse of information for students and researchers in linguistics as well as anyone interested in lexical variation in contemporary English.

This book includes 14 contributions to the study of structuralism as a historical current in the history of European ideas and more particularly in the study of language. The studies combine to contextualize structuralism in both its unity and its diversity, hence the title. In the first section, the reader is introduced to the broader canvas of disciplines and competing ideas surrounding structuralism, starting with Claude Lévi-Strauss’s anthropological structuralism. The second section views structural linguistics from without and investigates its legacy in relation to contemporary linguistics, analyzing its relationship to functionalism and its forerunners. The third section explores structuralism from within, with particular attention to a specific output: Louis Hjelmslev’s theory of glossematics. This constitutes the focus from where the immediate past within the Danish tradition is reanalyzed and its heritage for today’s semiotics and linguistics is discussed. Illustrated.

**An Observer Book of the Year**The new memoir from prize-winning writer and filmmaker Xiaolu Guo - playful, provocative and original, it's her deeply personal take on striving for a life of her own'When it comes to spinning light and shadow on the complexities of living, loving and language, Xiaolu Guo is one of the most valuable writers in the world' DEBORAH LEVYThe world can seem strange and lonely when you step away from your family and everything you have tried to call your own. Yet beauty may also appear. In the autumn of 2019 Xiaolu travelled to New York to take up her position as a visiting professor for a year, leaving her child and partner behind in London. The encounter with American culture and people threatens her sense of identity and throws her into a crisis - of meaning, desire, obligation and selfhood. This is a memoir about separation - by continents, by language, and from people. It's about being an outsider and the desperate longing to connect. Xiaolu uses her exploration of language (one of the meanings of the word 'radical' is the graphic component, or root, of Chinese characters), and her own life, to create this unique text. At once a memoir, a dictionary, and an ardent love letter, it is an expression of her fascination with Western culture and her nostalgia for Eastern landscapes, and an attempt to describe the space in between. An archive of an artist's search for creative freedom, it is above all else an intimate account of her efforts to carve out a life of her own.'Radical in angle of attack, smart and brave' IAIN SINCLAIR, author of The Gold Machine
