Robert Hansen was dubbed the "Butcher Baker" by the media after he kidnapped, raped and killed at least seventeen women with possibly more victims that have yet to be identified. The murders took place in and around his hometown of Anchorage, Alaska as Hansen would hunt down his victims in the woods with a variety of weapons. It would take over twelve years before authorities would finally capture and convict Hansen in 1983. His case would remain out of the limelight until a movie called "Frozen Ground" would be released, detailing his exploits with John Cusack starring as Hansen.

Elizabeth Roxanne Haysom (*1964) is the protagonist of one of the most spectacular crimes of the last decades. In March 1985, she had her parents murdered by her lover Jens Soering, the then 18-year-old son of a German diplomat. To this day, there is speculation as to whether Haysom herself was at the crime scene. - The gruesome massacre was preceded by a fierce love affair between the highly gifted students. Letters that Haysom and Soering sent to each other before the crime, as well as a joint diary they kept during the escape, are characterized by high literary quality and intellectual brilliance - and this primarily applies to Elizabeth Haysom's writings. The two perpetrators, each sentenced to 90 years, were released on parole in November 2019 after more than 33 years in prison. Elizabeth Haysom has remained silent since her conviction. Only a column that she wrote between 2003 and 2008 for a regional newspaper, the ¿Fluvanna Review¿, gives insight into her feelings and once again shows her great writing talent. These numerous essays are collected in this book, as well as a more recent statement from the year 2019.

[ta'bü] an unwritten law that forbids doing certain things because of beliefs within a society. This illustrated book crosses borders intentionally, goes where there are otherwise only dark shadows and explores hidden facets of human lust, culture and nature. The renowned photo artist Vince Voltage, who is internationally celebrated for his extraordinary events and his «Raw Love» photo book presents himself here quite simply in black and white and lets the moment speak, the intimate moment when the taboo is broken. What he captures with his camera - looking beyond the taboo - are people who experience and share something together. The shock always remains chic, the images inviting and haunting, and so Vince Voltage balances on the razor's edge between ruckus and enchanting intimacy, which takes the taboo as an occasion, but never evaluates it and thus gives people space and dignity.

Love and hate were once the main purveyors of the gallows. The tragic fates of three women executed by hanging in the days of New France and the United-Canada bear witness to this. Reconstructing the events from historical articles and, above all, from the Ottawa Criminal Archives, the author recounts these little-known stories that animated the lives of former Canadians:¿The crime and hanging of a young Montreal slave, Marie-Joseph Angélique, who, out of hatred, set fire to half the city of Montreal in 1734.¿the murders perpetrated by the legendary Marie-Josephte Corriveau, and her execution in 1763, on the very spot where Quebec's National Assembly now stands.¿the crimes committed by Marie-Anne Crispin, the murder of her husband and that of her lover's wife, as well as her problematic death on the gallows with her accomplice in 1858, which provoked an extremely violent riot in the streets of Montreal. This plunge into the heart of the crimes, trials and executions gives us an unusual opportunity to relive a part of Quebec's judicial History.

The sequel to bestseller Tokyo Vice, now a major HBO drama, with a second season coming in 2024.It's been a while since Jake Adelstein was the only gaijin crime reporter for the Yomiuri Shimbun. The global economy is in shambles, Jake is off the police beat but still chain-smoking clove cigarettes, and Tadamasa Goto, the most powerful boss in the Japanese organised-crime world, has been banished from the yakuza, giving Adelstein one less enemy to worry about - for the time being.Adelstein has a new gig these days: due-diligence work, or using his investigative skills to dig up information on entities whose bosses would prefer that some things stay hidden. Underneath layers of paperwork, corporations are thinly veiled fronts for the yakuza. Pachinko parlors are a hidden battleground between disenfranchised Japanese Koreans and North Korean extortion plots. TEPCO, the electric power corporation keeping the lights on for all of Tokyo, scrambles to hide its willful oversights that ultimately led to the 2011 Fukushima meltdown. And the Japanese government shows levels of corruption that make gangsters look like philanthropists. In this riveting memoir, Jake Adelstein once again reveals Japan's dark underworld, as he battles to keep himself in the light.

The instant New York Times bestseller • A Washington Post Notable Book • A TIME Must Read Book of the Year • A Kirkus Best of the Year Book“It literally changed my outlook on the world…incredible.” —Shonda Rhimes"The Barn is serious history and skillful journalism, but with the nuance and wallop of a finely wrought novel… The Barn describes not just the poison of silence and lies, but also the dignity of courage and truth.” — The Washington Post“The most brutal, layered, and absolutely beautiful book about Mississippi, and really how the world conspired with the best and worst parts of Mississippi, I will ever read…Reporting and reckoning can get no better, or more important, than this.” —Kiese Laymon“An incredible history of a crime that changed America.” —John Grisham"With integrity, and soul, Thompson unearths the terrible how and why, carrying us back and forth through time, deep in Mississippi—baring, sweat, soil, and heart all the way through.” —Imani PerryA shocking and revelatory account of the murder of Emmett Till that lays bare how forces from around the world converged on the Mississippi Delta in the long lead-up to the crime, and how the truth was erased for so long Wright Thompson’s family farm in Mississippi is 23 miles from the site of one of the most notorious and consequential killings in American history, yet he had to leave the state for college before he learned the first thing about it. To this day, fundamental truths about the crime are widely unknown, including where it took place and how many people were involved. This is no accident: the cover-up began at once, and it is ongoing.  In August 1955, two men, Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, were charged with the torture and murder of the 14-year-old Emmett Till in Money, Mississippi. After their inevitable acquittal in a mockery of justice, they gave a false confession to a journalist, which was misleading about where the long night of hell took place and who was involved. In fact, Wright Thompson reveals, at least eight people can be placed at the scene, which was inside the barn of one of the killers, on a plot of land within the six-square-mile grid whose official name is Township 22 North, Range 4 West, Section 2, West Half, fabled in the Delta of myth as the birthplace of the blues on nearby Dockery Plantation. Even in the context of the racist caste regime of the time, the four-hour torture and murder of a Black boy barely in his teens for whistling at a young white woman was acutely depraved; Till’s mother Mamie Till-Mobley’s decision to keep the casket open seared the crime indelibly into American consciousness. Wright Thompson has a deep understanding of this story—the world of the families of both Emmett Till and his killers, and all the forces that aligned to place them together on that spot on the map. As he shows, the full horror of the crime was its inevitability, and how much about it we still need to understand. Ultimately this is a story about property, and money, and power, and white supremacy. It implicates all of us. In The Barn, Thompson brings to life the small group of dedicated people who have been engaged in the hard, fearful business of bringing the truth to light. Putting the killing floor of the barn on the map of Township 22 North, Range 4 West, Section 2, West Half, and the Delta, and America, is a way of mapping the road this country must travel if we are to heal our oldest, deepest wound.

This novel, the fourth of the author's Ted Born Classic Courtroom Trialsassociate reveals she has seen a dark, mysterious dream vision about Constance that foretells her tragic demise. Constance hires Ted Born to help her get compensated for the loss, and Ted successfully represents her, though he and Constance both know the former associate has limited ability to pay the true damages she has caused. Thus, crippled financially at the beginning and lacking the personal participation of her former key associate, Constance's enterprise fails to achieve its goals, and the financial situation gets progressively worse. Constance's husband is not supportive of Constance during her difficult times, going from indifference to criticism to hostility and infidelity. Constance continues throughout the story to seek Born's advice series, follows talented Constance Stanfield, young mother of two beautiful children, in her effort to expand the appreciation of beautiful lace, and delicate hand sewing and embroidery within her community and beyond. Steeped in her love of ancient Greek culture, Constance lives in a Greek Revival columned home at what she calls Helicon Heights, commemorating Mt. Helicon in Greece where the winged horse Pegasus touched down and caused springs of water to gush up, which the Muses regarded as sacred - Muses who shared their love of beauty with humanity. Pegasus tried to fly up to Mt. Olympus but never made it and later became the custodian of Zeus' lightning bolts and eventually a constellation. Constance had a crucially important associate in her lace enterprise who abruptly abandons the deal after Constance has sunk a lot of borrowed money in it. After much resistance to explaining why she abandoned Constance, the about problems she faces, both corporate and personal, and their communications provide critical parts of the plot. At one point, Constance tries to salvage her business through an arrangement with a startup venture featuring synthetic or simulated lace, but that initiative proves to be of limited help in the long run. The author lays bare the innermost feelings and thoughts of Constance and the other characters via you-are-there insights provided by dialogue and by their verbatim mental reflections. Mostly, there is sympathy for and empathy with Constance, but the legitimate concerns of her husband and others in the narrative are also treated objectively, and their characters become understandable and relatable. As Constance's circumstances get more desperate, she resorts to a mix of alcohol and pain pills, and finally to unbelievable other measures to deal with her depression, which at times will evoke horror and a variety of emotions. There are ambiguities surrounding the death of Constance, whether it was murder or suicide. It will be up to the reader to resolve this ambiguity based on all the events and clues leading up to the demise of Constance. This novel is somewhat different from the author's previous novels, in that the most suspenseful moments occur after the end of the lone trial in the story, but no trial could be more gripping and horrifying than the events toward the end.
