    288,95 kr.

The New York Times bestseller is now available for the first time in hardcover. Thomas C. Foster's classic, a lively and entertaining introduction to literary basics, including symbols, themes, and contexts, is an indispensable guide for instilling a love of reading and unlocking the hidden treasures of literature. While many books can be enjoyed for their basic stories, there are often deeper meanings interwoven in these texts. How to Read Literature Like a Professor helps us to discover those hidden truths by looking at literature with the eyes?and the literary codes?of the ultimate professional reader: the college professor. What does it mean when a hero is traveling along a dusty road? When he hands a drink to his companion? When he is drenched in a sudden rain shower?Ranging from major themes to literary models, narrative devices, and form, Thomas C. Foster provides us with a broad overview of literature?a world where a road leads to a quest; a shared meal signifies a communion; and rain, whether cleansing or destructive, is never just a shower?and shows us how to make our reading experiences more enriching, satisfying, and fun. With wit and charm, Foster makes the modes and meanings of authors from Shakespeare and Woolf to Steinbeck and Faulkner accessible. Whether it's Hamlet delivering a soliloquy or the glorious Twelfth Night feast in Joyce's ?The Dead,? in Foster's capable hands the joys of reading are opened. Foster spent his career teaching literature and now puts the tools into your hands.

The focus of this study in comparative criticism is close analysis of Dostoevsky's first literary publication-his 1844 translation of the first edition of Balzac's Eug nie Grandet (1834)-and the stylistic choices that he made as a young writer while working on Balzac's novel. Through the prism of close reading, the author analyzes Dostoevsky's literary debut in the context of his future mature aesthetic style and poetics. Comparing the original and the translation side by side, this book focuses on the omissions, additions and substitutions that Dostoevsky brought into the text. It demonstrates how young Dostoevsky's free translation of Eugenie Grandet predicts the creation of his own literary characters, themes, and other aspects of his literary output that are now recognized as Dostoevsky's signature style. It investigates the changes that Dostoevsky made while working on Balzac's text and analyzes the complex transplantation of Balzac's imagery, motifs, and character portraiture from Eugenie Grandet into Dostoevsky's own writing later on.

This is the first study to examine the Arabic translations of a number of major modern poems in the English language, in particular T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land and Walt Whitman's Song of Myself. With case studies dedicated to the Arab translators who were themselves modernist poets, including Badr Shakir al-Sayyab and Saadi Yusuf, Ghareeb Iskander brings a reading of the translations as literary works in their own right. Revealing why the Arab modernists were drawn to these poems through situational context, Iskander shows that the influence exerted by the English originals stems from the creative manner in which the Arab poet-translators converted them into their own language.

205 Thoughts from the Heart of a Man, is a collection of poetry for encouragement and guidance from a Mans prospective. The content of this book is from the brokenness of a man who has accepted his mistakes and successes. In our quest for peace, a person wants to be sure that there is hope. Suffering will come to us all but we must endure till the end. Since I'm open about loving me for who I am and not for what I'm worth then I have succeeded in expressing the feelings of most of my audience. Therefore expressing my thoughts openly to my audience I gain joy in knowing that others actually feel the way that I do about life. Some may be afraid that others might judge them for saying what's on their heart. When you read my poetry keep in mind I have opened my heart up to you the reader. Make no mistake of my motive. My sole purpose is to be transparent so that others can see they're not alone. Remember, I have fallen several times as we all do- but I will get back up so others may learn from my love to preserve. Love is the core of the book, that's why I exist. Enjoy with hope and thanksgiving. Love and blessings to you Sincerely. Alan Alston Sr.

With the great Renaissance voyages to the New World came the popularity of Wunderkammern, or cabinets of wonders, in which newly discovered monsters and marvels could be displayed. Like such a cabinet, this collection of essays surveys the monstrous and the marvelous—as transmuted in the alembic of Rikki Ducornet's open-hearted vision—in literature, art and film. For her, excess anomaly, and heterodoxy entice the imagining mind to embrace "otherness," enlarge the world and regenerate Eden.

A Gate Enables passage between what is inside and what is outside, and the connection poetry forges between inner and outer lives is the fundamental theme of these nine essays.Nine Gates begins with a close examination of the roots of poetic craft in "the mind of concentration" and concludes by exploring the writer's role in creating a sense of community that is open, inclusive and able to bind the individual and the whole in a way that allows each full self-expression. in between, Nine Gates illumines the nature of originality, translation, the various strategies by which meaning unfolds itself in language, poetry's roots in oral memory and the importance of the shadow to good art.A person who enters completely into the experience of a poem is initiated into a deeper intimacy with life. Delving into the nature of poetry, Jane Hirshfield also writes on the nature of the human mind, perception and experience. Nine Gates is about the underpinnings of poetic craft, but it is also about a way of being alive in the world -- alertly, musically, intelligently, passionately, permeably. In part a primer for the general reader, Nine Gates is also a manual for the working writer, with each "gate" exploring particular strategies of language and thought that allow a poem to convey meaning and emotion with clarity and force. Above all, Nine Gates is an insightful guide to the way the mind of poetry awakens our fundamental consciousness of what can be known when a person is most fully alive.

  • af Cristina Peri Rossi
    198,95 kr.

The Ship of Fools has established Cristina Peri Rossi, author of a dozen other books of poetry and prose, as a leading writer in Europe and Latin America. This is her most important work in English and is recognized as a modern classic. The Ship of Fools subverts and reinvents the novel form, its characters, genders, and language, mixing fantasy and reality, medieval and modern. The wandering hero refuses to conform to an established order that can descend to the depths of militarism and machismo. The relationship between power and sex is posed in a series of ever more ambiguous events, dreams and riddles. All is resolved in the stunning climax that wittily overturns the traditional novel's progress of man and woman towards the marriage bed."A glorious mess, baffling and alluring . . . [an] exercise of mind and emotion that can make sense of the universe without reducing its complexity. That's hard to do, and that's what she's done." -The Village Voice"A journey around the world as kaleidoscope, ever changing, inquisitive." -El Pais (Madrid)"Biting satire . . . worthy of Gulliver's Travels." -Women's Review of Books
