The focus of this study in comparative criticism is close analysis of Dostoevsky's first literary publication-his 1844 translation of the first edition of Balzac's Eug nie Grandet (1834)-and the stylistic choices that he made as a young writer while working on Balzac's novel. Through the prism of close reading, the author analyzes Dostoevsky's literary debut in the context of his future mature aesthetic style and poetics. Comparing the original and the translation side by side, this book focuses on the omissions, additions and substitutions that Dostoevsky brought into the text. It demonstrates how young Dostoevsky's free translation of Eugenie Grandet predicts the creation of his own literary characters, themes, and other aspects of his literary output that are now recognized as Dostoevsky's signature style. It investigates the changes that Dostoevsky made while working on Balzac's text and analyzes the complex transplantation of Balzac's imagery, motifs, and character portraiture from Eugenie Grandet into Dostoevsky's own writing later on.

This is the first study to examine the Arabic translations of a number of major modern poems in the English language, in particular T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land and Walt Whitman's Song of Myself. With case studies dedicated to the Arab translators who were themselves modernist poets, including Badr Shakir al-Sayyab and Saadi Yusuf, Ghareeb Iskander brings a reading of the translations as literary works in their own right. Revealing why the Arab modernists were drawn to these poems through situational context, Iskander shows that the influence exerted by the English originals stems from the creative manner in which the Arab poet-translators converted them into their own language.

Suffering will come to us all but we must endure till the end. Since I'm open about loving me for who I am and not for what I'm worth then I have succeeded in expressing the feelings of most of my audience. Therefore expressing my thoughts openly to my audience I gain joy in knowing that others actually feel the way that I do about life. Some may be afraid that others might judge them for saying what's on their heart. When you read my poetry keep in mind I have opened my heart up to you the reader. Make no mistake of my motive. My sole purpose is to be transparent so that others can see they're not alone. Remember, I have fallen several times as we all do- but I will get back up so others may learn from my love to preserve. Faszination, Inspiration und sexuelle Freiheit - ein neuer Blick auf englische Autor*innenund ihr Berlin der Goldenen Zwanziger.John Chancellor stellte 1929 in seinem Reiseführer »How to Be Happy in Berlin« eine Frage, die englische Autor*innen insgesamt seit mehr als hundert Jahren beschäftigt - mit unterschiedlichsten Antworten und weitreichender kultureller Wirkung. Neben W. H. Auden, Christopher Isherwood und Stephen Spender, dem berühmten Dreigestirn, das mit seinen Texten und deren Verfilmungen den Grundstein für den Mythos Berlins legte, spielten dabei auch unbekanntere Stimmen eine Rolle: Die Übersetzerin Freuds, Alix Strachey, die aus Berlin eine Fülle lebendiger Briefen an ihren Ehemann James in London schrieb. Die Botschaftergattin Helen D`Abernon, die in ihren Memoiren das soziale Elend Berlins nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg ebenso beschreibt wie die rauschenden Feste in der britischen Botschaft. In diesem Open-Access-band geht es um die Thematisierung des Verhältnisses zwischen den gegenwärtig getrennten "Zwei Kulturen" und Umrisse ihrer neuen Synthese in Richtung auf eine zeitgenössische, auf Interdisziplinarität gegründeten "Dritten Kultur" als Zusammenschau von Literaturwissenschaft, Philosophie und Naturwissenschaft. Dabei wird Kafka als ein Autor ernst genommen, dessen Nähe zu Autoren der Romantik (Kleist etwa als einer seiner "Blutsbrüder") ihn dazu bestimmte, deren zentrales Interesse an der Elektrizität (in Form des Mesmerismus beispielsweise) zu teilen. Als eine Weiterführung hinein in die neueste Moderne gelangt Kafkas besondere Begegnung mit Einstein und dessen Relativitätstheorie zur Darstellung, deren Einwirkung insbesondere auf Kafkas Spätwerk dargelegt wird. Als moderne Spielform solch "electrisch"- transdisziplinär orientierten literarischen Schreibens wird diesen Ausführungen Botho Strauß` gegenwärtiges Novellenwerk zur Seite gestellt.
