Kongevåbenets fremkomst, udvikling og betydning følges fra det ældste kendte eksempel på våbenet med løver og hjerter eller blade fra ca. 1194 til en komposition med mange felter. Deres betydninger og motiveringen for deres antagelse forklares i lyset af den førte politik. Baggrunden for og opfattelsen af de tre kroner behandles fra før Kalmarunionens dannelse i 1397 og videre til den langvarige dansk-svenske strid om dem i 1500- og 1600-tallet.Våbenerne for kongetitlerne ‘de Venders’ og ‘de Goters’ opfattes som udtryk for prætention. Det gjaldt også i særlige sammenhænge Norges øksebærende løve, der af kongesønner og hertuger blev brugt som prætentionsvåben for titlen ‘arving til Norge’. Digitaliseringen har forbedret søgemulighederne i forhold til både historisk og helt aktuelt materiale, og samarbejdet mellem folke- og forskningsbiblioteker har gjort information mere tilgængelig for alle.
