"Looking at encounters that can puncture or jolt us, this volume uses art as a lens through which to register and understand exceptional experiences. The volume also includes the fieldworker's experience of unexpected events that can lead to key understandings, as well as revelatory moments that happen during artistic creation and while looking at art. By exploring exceptional experiences through art, the volume asks probing questions for anthropology. In recognizing that art is all-encompassing - including, as it does, narrative, performance, dance and images - Exceptional Experiences situates itself within a number of conversations on methodological and conceptual issues in anthropology and beyond"--
For introductory courses Research Methods in any area of studyfrom Anthropology to Zoology Engaging, cross-disciplinary, practical.Practical Research: Planning and Design is a do-it-yourself, understand-it-yourself manual for planning and conducting research. Suitable for a wide variety of courses in basic research methodology, the text guides the reader, step-by-step, from the selection of a problem, through the process of conducting authentic research, to the preparation of a completed report, with practical suggestions throughout. The authors emphasize the idea that quality research demands planning and design, and they provide what is needed for readers to be able to execute their own research projects effectively and professionally. From reviews of the book: [Practical Research] is written in a very user-friendly style for novice researchers. It gives a good overview of research methodology in a very concise manner. I like the extended examples. Brian Belland, Utah State University The primary strengths are the authors capacity to provide a succinct overview to research in its broadest sense, while offering enough depth to both engage the reader and provoke an interest in further study. For this reason, Practical Research: Planning and Design represents a seminal introduction to the subject of research and remains a helpful reference tool along the way for novice and experienced researchers alike. A Unified Electro-Gravity (UEG) Theory of Nature, by Nirod K. Das, is a research book describing discovery of a new theory of physics, which unifies all known fundamental forces and phenomena of nature. The new UEG theory introduces a general theoretical paradigm, unifying electrical, gravitational as well as mechanical principles, which can self-consistently model all elementary particles, as well as explain currently mysterious astrophysical, cosmological and quantum-mechanical phenomena. The book is presented as a set of articles that focus on specific aspects of the unified theory. The articles are grouped into major themes, starting with an introduction of the basic theory and its gradual development. The UEG theory predicts the value of the fine structure constant of electrodynamics, and the physical structures of the electron, proton, neutrino and other elementary particles. It unfolds the secrets of quantum physics, and explains galaxy rotation and cosmological expansion without need for any hypothetical dark matter or dark energy.
The essential guide to successful ecological research-now updated and expandedMost books and courses in ecology cover facts and concepts but don't explain how to actually do ecological research. How to Do Ecology provides nuts-and-bolts advice on organizing and conducting a successful research program. This one-of-a-kind book explains how to choose a research question and answer it through manipulative experiments and systematic observations. Because science is a social endeavor, the book provides strategies for working with other people, including professors and collaborators. It suggests effective ways to communicate your findings in the form of journal articles, oral presentations, posters, and grant and research proposals. The book also includes ideas to help you identify your goals, organize a season of fieldwork, and deal with negative results. In short, it makes explicit many of the unspoken assumptions behind doing good research in ecology and provides an invaluable resource for meaningful conversations between ecologists. This second edition of How to Do Ecology features new sections on conducting and analyzing observational surveys, job hunting, and becoming a more creative researcher, as well as updated sections on statistical analyses.
This book offers a brief history of how autoethnography has been employed in studies of sport and physical (in)activity to date and makes an explicit call for anti-colonial approaches - challenging scholars of physical culture to interrogate and write against the colonial assumptions at work in so many physical cultural and academic spaces.
