This book chronicles his adventures and misadventures as he discovers that life in the United States for an immigrant like him is more complicated than he imagined. So, one day he begins writing the chronicles of his life, hoping to give recently-arrived and would-be immigrants an accurate tale of life in America. Interestingly, the author arrived in the U.S. when the 1993 World Trade Center bombing occurred, just to witness the effects of the September 11, 2001 attacks from a distance and then live through the COVID-19 pandemic in the NYC area. His personal story thus incorporates his account of these historical events and others. Un inmigrante astrólogo en Nueva York, Un relato verdadero de la vida en Estados Unidos (An immigrant astrologer in New York, A true account of life in America) presents the story of Carlos Anaya Mantilla (Peru, 1967) as he goes from job to job, and eventually establishing as a cook in the restaurant industry. He discovers more talents when he becomes a guest opinion writer for a Spanish newspaper, a background cast member playing a small role in a feature movie, an actor in other roles in theater plays, and a member of a Peruvian cultural NYC-based group. Carlos also entered the field of astrology by taking classes with a renowned Latina NYC astrologer, later becoming a known astrologer in the area, hosting an astrology radio show, and appearing on a T.V. Spanish show to share his knowledge on the subject. The author published his first book in 2013.

In the year 1908 four families from East Frisia, which lies on the coast of northern Germany and close to the Dutch border, decide to emigrate to North America. This open access book examines the impacts and experiences of family separation on forced migrants and their transnational families. On the one hand, it investigates how people with a forced migration background in Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America experience separation from their families, and on the other, how family and kin in the countries of origin or transit are impacted by the often precarious circumstances of their family members in receiving countries. In particular, this book provides new knowledge on the nexus between transnational family separation, forced migration, and everyday (in)security. Additionally, it yields comparative information for assessing the impacts of relevant legislation and administrative practice in a number of national contexts. Based on rich empirical data, including unique cases about South-South migration, the findings in this book are highly relevant to academics in migration and refugee studies as well as policy-makers, legislators and practitioners.

This book investigates the role and influence of non-state actors (NSAs) and local authorities in the process leading to the adoption of the 2018 Global Compact for Migration (GCM), the first intergovernmental negotiation of its kind at the UN. The research draws upon methods initially applied to assess global climate negotiations, and for the first time analyzes the influence of NSAs and local authorities in an international negotiation on migration. It builds on an assessment of the state of the art on global migration governance, adding new perspectives and insights. The analysis of the influence of NSAs and local authorities is backed by an online survey of participating stakeholders, interviews with key actors, and hundreds of other primary sources obtained from the process. The author finds that the UN system¿s willingness to onboard NSAs was key to creating the GCM as it stands today. While the research finds little direct influence from NSAs during the negotiations, the first draft of the GCM was very much informed by their input. Local authorities, still new to the global stage, made the case for their further inclusion in global migration governance.

This book explores the criminalisation of irregular migration in Europe. In particular, it investigates the meaning, purpose, and consequences of criminalising unauthorised entry and stay. From a theoretical perspective, the book adds to the debate on the persistence of irregular migration, despite governments¿ attempts at deterring it, by taking an interdisciplinary approach that draws from international political economy and criminology. Using Italy and France as case studies, and relying on previously unreleased data and interviews, it argues that criminalisation has no effect on migratory flows, and that this is due to factors including the latter¿s structural determinants and the likely creation of substitution effects. Furthermore, criminalisation is found to lead to adverse consequences, including by contributing to vicious cycles of irregularity and insecurity.

In der Untersuchung werden subjektive Deutungen des Trennungs- und Scheidungsprozesses wie auch die Auseinandersetzungen mit den Scheidungsfolgen aufgedeckt. Diese Analyse bezieht erstmalig Männer mit türkischem Migrationshintergrund im Trennungs- und Scheidungsprozess ein.

This book departs from existing studies by focusing on the impact of international influences on the society, culture, and language of both North and South Korea. Since President Kim Young Sam¿s segyehwa drive of the mid-1990s, South Korea has become a model for successful globalization. In contrast, North Korea is commonly considered one of the least internationally integrated countries. This characterization fails to account for the reality of the two Koreas and their global engagements. The opening essay situates the chapters by highlighting some significant contrasts and commonalities between the experiences of North and South Koreäs history of engagement with the world beyond the Peninsula. The chapters explore both the longer-term historical influence of Koreäs international contacts as well as specific Korean cultural, linguistic, and social developments that have occurred since the 1990s demise of the global Cold War and greater international integration.
