Den Rahmen dieser Arbeit bildet die Frage nach der Bedeutung der sozialistischen Schriften Oscar Wildes und John Stuart Mills für aktuelle gesellschaftspolitische Debatten. Die sozialistischen Positionen Wildes und Mills werden dargestellt und anhand einiger konkreter Konzepte wie Bildung und Individualismus auf Ähnlichkeiten im Verständnis untersucht. Dabei zeigt sich, dass beide konforme Denkweisen aufweisen und Oscar Wilde maßgeblich vom Werk Mills, insbesondere von seiner Freiheitsschrift, beeinflusst wurde. Eingeordnet werden beide Denker schließlich in den sozialistischen Diskurs des 19. Jahrhunderts, worin sich ihre persönliche Vorgehensweise widerspiegelt.

Mitte der achtziger Jahre begannen erste Bestrebungen, die Tönnies-Forschung zu institutionalisieren, als die Ferdinand-Tönnies-Gesellschaft e.V. in Kiel und am Institut für Soziologie der Universität Hamburg die spätere Ferdinand-Tönnies-Arbeitsstelle sich der Erschließung und Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Werkes des Nestors der deutschen Soziologie annahmen. Auf der Grundlage der geleisteten Vorarbeiten wurde eine Tönnies-Gesamtausgabe (TG) in 24 Bänden entworfen. In dieser kritischen Gesamtausgabe werden die veröffentlichten authentischen und autorisierten deutschen und fremdsprachigen Texte sowie Werke aus dem Nachlass, sofern sie die Form literarischer Selbständigkeit haben, aufgenommen. Die ersten 22 Bände der TG beinhalten die veröffentlichten Texte Tönnies', der 23. Band enthält Schriften aus dem Nachlass, der letzte Band die Gesamtregister und -verzeichnisse. Neben den edierten Texten enthalten die Bände Inhaltsverzeichnis(se), ein Abkürzungs- und Siglenverzeichnis, einen Erläuterungs- und Variantenapparat sowie Personen-, Literatur- und Sachregister. Der editorische Bericht gibt knappe Auskunft über die Quellenlage, die Materialbeschaffenheit, den Autorisierungsgrad und die Autorenkorrekturen.
