  • - Post-Heroic Reimaginings of the Warrior
    af Brad West
    1.575,95 kr.

This edited book demonstrates a new multidimensional comprehension of the relationship between war, the military and civil society by exploring the global rise of paramilitary culture. Moving beyond binary understandings that inform the militarization of culture thesis and examining various national and cultural contexts, the collection outlines ways in which a process of paramilitarization is shaping the world through the promotion of new warrior archetypes. It is argued that while the paramilitary hero is associated with military themes, their character is in tension with the central principals of modern military organization, something that often challenges the state's perceived monopoly on violence. As such paramilitization has profound implications for institutional military identity, the influence of paramilitary organizations and broadly how organised violence is popularly understood

The book that has been waiting to be written - how Ireland's housing policy has locked an entire generation out of the housing market and what we should do about it. Millennials are the first generation in Ireland to be worse off than their parents. Trapped in a game of rental roulette, stuck living at home as adults, and many on the brink of homelessness, the Irish housing crisis has defined the lives of an entire generation - and it is set to continue. With housing costs in Ireland the highest in the EU, the property ladder has been kicked from under thousands. So how did we get here ... and how do we break the cycle? In Gaffs, housing expert Rory Hearne urges us to think about the people behind the statistics, and shows us that there is a way towards a future where everyone has access to a home.

Recent research on singlehood shifts from the previous concentration of negative life outcomes of single status towards a concentration on positive outcomes. Further, most studies concerning singlehood have been performed in North American countries. Therefore, exploring factors related to single people's happiness and the specificity of singlehood in other than North American countries is becoming increasingly important. The authors utilize the data collected in the European Social Survey (ESS) in the period of 16 years (2002-2018) to determine the shares of never-married single adults in Europe and explore various factors associated with the happiness of single adults across 33 European countries. This monograph shows the review of definitions of singlehood, the rates of single individuals in each of the 33 European countries and across nine ESS rounds, and the socio-demographic profile of singles. It also presents the results of the analyses concerning the subjective well-being and general health of single people, basic human values, and religion.

    af Jun Fu
    1.091,95 kr.

By focusing on Chinese young adults' everyday online practices, the book offers a unique treatment of the topic of young people and the Chinese Internet that navigates between the dominant focus on censorship on the one hand and protest and politicized action on the other. The book brings the focus of research from highly visible or spectacular forms of collectivity, belonging, and identification exhibited in young people's online practices to young people's everyday social and cultural engagement through new media. It brings new insights by understanding the meanings of young people's mundane and everyday online engagement for their citizenship learning, identity performance, and their formation of political subjectivity. Readers will gain insights into citizenship in China, and young people and the Chinese Internet.

"During the pandemic, the focus has been on how education and social interaction with peers were integral to children's functioning. However, very little regard was given to another very important question- how do our children feel about the pandemic and how do they process this experience? Why is it assumed that cognitive functioning and social interaction are the most significant areas of child development? What emotional factors are at play? Are the children alright? How are their families coping and does this have an impact on the children? What I hope to achieve by compiling this edited collection is to bring awareness to the child's perspective, within the family unit, in addition to addressing other contributing factors that had an impact on their coping mechanisms. This collection will hopefully inform whether the choices, that were made and should be made related to children, have been sound ones and perhaps should be re-examined as a result of this book's findings, conclusions and speculations."--
