"When we think of the Roaring 20's -- that decade of gangsters, jazz, Prohibition, and flappers -- most of us think of Chicago, Al Capone, and the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. The Windy City has become famous for its one-way-rides and violent shootouts, but author Troy Taylor presents another part of Prohibition-era Illinois that not only outgunned and outdrank Chicago but has just as many ghost stories left lingering behind from those turbulent days. Southern Illinois -- or 'Little Egypt' as some call it -- not only had just as many gangsters and just as much booze and bloodshed, but it also had aerial bombings, homemade military tanks, dirty cops, unsolved murders, attacks on hospitals, and gun battles with the Ku Klux Klan! Take a trip back in time to the days of the explosive Southern Illinois gang wars, when Charlie Birger, the Shelton Brothers, the Ku Klux Klan, and a bunch of wild card gunmen wreaked havoc, created mayhem, and carried out countless murders as they fought for control of the liquor trade. And it was all happening at the same time Al Capone was the biggest mob boss in that city by Lake Michigan. Maybe the gangs of Southern Illinois didn't wear fancy suits or drink their bootleg liquor in fancy glasses on Lake Shore Drive, but they were just as deadly as their counterparts -- maybe even more so!"--

This book takes an organizational sociological perspective on the systematically carried out mass murders in the context of Nazi euthanasia in Hadamar. On the basis of numerous theoretically elaborated as well as empirically proven organizational mechanisms, it is shown how these illegal practices were "normalized" in an extraordinary way by and for the personnel, who were not trained or otherwise predisposed to murder. The acts thus became a legitimate expectation of action, while at the same time the organizational integration had a desolidarizing, demoralizing, and responsibility-relieving effect. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

This book addresses one of today's most urgent issues: the loss of wildlife and habitat, which together constitute an ecological crisis. Combining studies from different disciplines such as law, political science and criminology, with a focus on animal rights, the chapters explore the successes and failures of the international wildlife conservation and trade treaties, CITES and the BERN Convention. While these conventions have played a crucial role in protecting endangered species from trade and in the rewilding of European large carnivores, the case studies in this book demonstrate huge variations in their implementation and enforcement across Europe. In conclusion, the book advocates for a non-anthropocentric policy approach to strengthen wildlife conservation in Europe.

From the Introduction:This book contains my older writings (1998-2008) about the activities of Western security intelligence organizations (secret agents representing "national security") and what happened in my life during these years. The book also includes my 1991-1992 experiences with KGB agents. These old writings have grammatical mistakes. I am sorry about this. All chapters of this book were written before 2009, while this introduction was written many years later, in 2023. The largest article of this book (Chapter 1), together with other articles and documents present in this book, was also sent by me in numerous letters to various officials who deal with human rights located in Canada, the USA, and various European countries.Because of the activities of Canadian secret agents during those years, especially snap-type noises (including noises at night) in rooms where I stayed, as well as other harassment techniques, in the following years, starting from 1998, I, as a Canadian citizen, 13 times applied for political asylum in 7 Western countries. Also, years later, in December of 2019, I finally discovered the root of my numerous serious physical, emotional, and cognitive problems that suddenly started, as out of nowhere, in 1998. The hair analysis test for heavy metals done by a German lab showed that my mercury level was 10 times above the upper limit. That explained why in 1998 I suddenly developed numerous health problems which later resulted in kidney failure, liver failure, serious GI problems (IBD, gastroparesis, etc.), and declining health for over 20 years. This condition is also known as "mad hatter syndrome".In 2.5 years of more targeted treatment, in June 2022, the mercury level in my hair dropped 50 times, to 5 times below the upper limit, and now I am dealing with over 20 years of mercury poisoning. As for the mental or cognitive effects of mercury, I can certainly claim that I remember my personal life events from the 1980s until 1998 much better than events that took place with me from 1999 until about 2021.Since 2009 and during the following years, there were many changes in national security organizations, while certain principles of their function remain unchanged. One of my greatest discoveries of the last decade was that when some secret agents use poisons and/or destroy the health of the target and/or are involved in activities that are criminal in the normal world, other secret agents are obliged to remain silent about wrongdoings of their colleagues in their special security intelligence world.Again, my sincere apologies for grammatical mistakes in these old documents written by me over 15 years ago.

Michael Plante, a low-level Hells Angels dogsbody in Vancouver, is arrested for extortion in 2003. Coincidentally, police intercept a boat carrying cocaine from Colombia to Vancouver, a shipment arranged by the East End chapter of Vancouver's Hells Angels. The cops need to send someone inside to gather evidence that can be used to arrest and convict the gang. Plante does not want to go to jail, so he cuts a deal, beginning his descent into the nightmare of going undercover in the Hells Angels. The stakes are high-the East End chapter of the Hells Angels is one of the richest in the world.Plante soon learns how slowly the justice system moves as it prepares to prosecute the arrested Hells Angels members. The high-profile and highly paid defence lawyers win their applications to sever the indictment into a number of trials, meaning that Plante will face months on the witness stand under heavy grilling.Much is riding on the trials: Plante's life and livelihood; the federal government's legislation on gangsterism that could dismantle the Hells Angels; and the freedom of the accused-all high-ranking and enormously wealthy Hells Angels. The judge's final ruling shocks the court.

"The blistering inside story of a startup that made millions pushing opioids-until its cutthroat tactics were exposed and its executives put behind bars John Kapoor had amassed a small fortune in pharmaceuticals when he conceived of a new product. It was the 2000s, and opioids were big business. If Kapoor, an immigrant and the billionaire founder of Insys, could find a new way to administer the highly potent fentanyl, he could patent his invention and sell it to those in need-at a steep price. The only problem: There weren't enough people in need. Kapoor's drug was approved for breakthrough cancer pain. If Subsys was going to turn a profit, the company would need to persuade doctors to prescribe it "off-label," for other, lesser forms of pain. This is the story of how Insys turned a niche drug into big business. With executives leading the charge, Insys sales reps seduced doctors with charm, money, and sex. Its administrators lied to health care providers, claiming recipients had cancer when they did not. It pushed drugs onto patients that would have benefited from safer options, or no drugs at all. The strategy worked: When Insys went public, it notched the biggest IPO of its year. But several employees reached their limit and quietly blew the whistle, bringing the full force of the justice system upon the drug maker. In The Hard Sell, author and National Magazine Award-finalist Evan Hughes lays bare the pharma playbook. He shows how drug makers like Insys, fueled by greed and a hunger for market share, turn deception into profit. The book represents a stunning vindication, but also a cautionary tale. As Hughes shows, Insys didn't do anything its competitors weren't also doing. It was simply worse at covering its tracks"--

This Element investigates the relationship between the narcotics industry and politics and assesses how it influences domestic political dynamics, including economic development prospects in Latin America. It argues that links between criminal organizations, politicians, and state agents give rise to criminal politics (i.e., the interrelated activity of politicians, organized crime actors, and state agents in pursuing their respective agendas and goals). Criminal politics is upending how countries function politically and, consequently, impacting the prospects and nature of their social and economic development. The Element claims that diverse manifestations of criminal politics arise depending on how different phases of drug-trafficking activity (e.g., production, trafficking, and money laundering) interact with countries' distinct politico-institutional endowments. The argument is probed through the systematic examination of four cases that have received scant attention in the specialized literature: Chile,Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay.

This book focuses on the displacement and convergence of transnational crimes in North Africa and in the area of the Mediterranean Sea, providing empirical analysis of human smuggling and of drug trafficking. It discusses the displacement of crime due to the exploitation of asymmetries in legislation, law enforcement, and other vulnerabilities.Using an innovative multimethodology, this volume describes the evolution of illicit flows related to human smuggling and trafficking of illicit goods. This approach helps to provide critical information such as traffickers¿ modi operandi, most exploited paths, and trafficked goods, that would not be achievable through more traditional methods. The Evolution of Illicit Flows will be a valuable resource for scholars and researchers of criminology and migration studies, as well as for policymakers and law enforcement working in transnational crimes and trafficking.

IT SEEMED THAT VIOLENCE WAS THE ORDER OF THE DAY... "There was a commotion when the big steel door flew open, a huge man stormed in and started screaming at us. Everybody stood up. The girl standing next to me whispered to me, "Suzy, do not speak. Not one word, OK?" I was a little kid in a big kids' prison. All these women were seasoned female warriors. I had not yet learned how to fight this fight. I could feel my heart beating faster as he screamed at us all. Then he rushed over and knocked a fellow female inmate to the floor, screaming at her. She never uttered a word and there was not one tear from her eyes.'Suzy became street-wise from an early age, a fighter for Justice no matter what the cause. Her experiences of living within and on the edge of the criminal world taught her to honour her word. It was her bond, a bond that kept her alive. People may not have always agreed with her but she held onto her integrity above all. Freedom of speech she believed was paramount and precious to her, unafraid of anyone or publicity her voice invoked. She never stopped fighting. She did the best she could with what she had at the time, she was a wife, a mother and a loyal partner. She remains and gives to the best of her ability, genuine friendship to all who know her and have known her over the last fifty, plus years.SHE WAS UNASHAMEDLY HERSELF AT ALL TIMES AND SHE PAID THE PRICE OF SIN.

This book presents the results of an international comparative study on the causes of rule deviation in business and medical organizations. Based on document and interview analyses as well as experiments, the discrepancy between (state) regulations and organizational practice is elaborated and discussed in an interdisciplinary perspective. On the basis of the distinction between organizational and individual deviance, it could be shown across national boundaries that the unwritten rules of the organization make a decisive contribution in explaining organizational wrongdoing, as well as their containment. Implications for effective prevention derived from this are also pointed out.

This book explores and explains how traditional and alternative media have framed the issues of gun trafficking into Mexico, drug-related violence, and spillover violence. It reveals how gun trafficking and drug-related violence are social problems for Mexico, while spillover violence is portrayed as a moral panic for the US.Readers will gain a better understanding of how the media portrays and frames the criminal activity that is occurring in Mexico and how it impacts the US. The book analyzes national newspapers from both sides of the US-Mexico border-The New York Times and El Universal-and draws on a theoretical framework of moral panics, social problems, and cultivation theory. It reveals six framing devices, "the blame game," "worthy and unworthy victims," "positive aspects," "negative aspects of gun trafficking," "indirect mention of gun trafficking," and "direct mention of gun trafficking," which are utilized by The New York Times and El Universal to discuss and frame the issue of gun trafficking into Mexico and its impact on Mexico's border violence.Mexico's Drug-Related Violence will be of great interest to students and scholars interested in the perception of media and crime, as well as those researching the topic of drug cartels and drug-related violence.
