"Human Nature" is a term most frequently used and yet but little understood. The average person knows in a general way what he and others mean when this term is employed, but very few are able to give an off-hand definition of the term or to state what in their opinion constitutes the real essence of the thought expressed by the familiar phrase. We are of the opinion that the first step in the process of correct understanding of any subject is that of acquaintance with its principal terms, and, so, we shall begin our consideration of the subject of Human Nature by an examination of the term used to express the idea itself. "Human," of course, means "of or pertaining to man or mankind." Therefore, Human Nature means the nature of man or mankind. "Nature," in this usage, means: "The natural disposition of mind of any person; temper; personal character; individual constitution; the peculiar mental characteristics and attributes which serve to distinguish one person from another." Thus we see that the essence of the nature of men, or of a particular human being, is the mind, the mental qualities, characteristics, properties and attributes. Human Nature is then a phase of psychology and subject to the laws, principles and methods of study, examination and consideration of that particular branch of science

Operated on as an infant, without anesthesia, Wendy P. Williams began life at war with her body. "There were tubes everywhere, in and out of every opening," her mother reminded her on every anniversary of her surgery. Autobiography of a Sea Creature takes readers on Williams' difficult sensory journey toward healing, as she communes along the way with horseshoe crabs, dolphins, and other marine life that taught her the restorative power of beauty, resilience, and interdependence. At times luscious and lyrical, at other times analytical and reflective, this literary memoir portrays the dissociative experience of trauma and the roots of self-destructive cycles, as well as the tragic results of medical beliefs at the time that infants could not feel pain. Autobiography of a Sea Creature is both a love letter to the earth and a hopeful testament of humans' capacity to heal our deepest wounds.

Lyle Simpson's "Why Was I Born?" explores the psychology underlying religious belief, through the prism of Abraham Maslow's "Hierarchy of Needs" and the Meyer-Briggs personality typology. Rejecting the easy answers of our society, Simpson addresses profound questions like "Why are we here?", "How Do We Face Our Own Death?", "Why Do We Need Others?", and "How do We Make Our Lives Significant?" from a humanist psychological standpoint, making vastly more sense than anyone who tries to answer these questions through our cultural traditions.

"From the richness of his experience and extensive medical training, Dr. James Dyson has forged an authentic, holistic understanding of the human being into a practical psychotherapeutic discipline. In mid-career, with more than fifty years of deep engagement with the esoteric teachings of Rudolf Steiner, the spirit at work in medicinal substances, and the therapeutic art of eurythmy, Dr. Dyson undertook the study of psychosynthesis psychology, nonviolent communication, and organizational development. This book sets out the resulting synthesis of these paths as a unique and powerful interdisciplinary approach to human health with practical tools for those engaged in healing, health care, counseling, and psychotherapy, as well as for anyone searching for insights to support their own healthy soul life." -- publisher's website

First published in 1943, 'A Theory of Human Motivation' is an article by Abraham H. Maslow, an American psychologist, in which he first introduced his hierarchy of needs, a theory of psychological health predicated on fulfilling inherent human needs in preference, pinnacling in self-actualization. Maslow thereafter expanded the idea to include his observations of humans' inherent curiosity. His theories parallel many other theories of human developmental psychology, some of which concentrate on describing the stages of growth in humans. Maslow explained various needs and used the terms Physiological, Safety, Belongingness, Love, Esteem, Self-Actualization, and Self-Transcendence to define the pattern that human motivations generally move through. Maslow studied what he called ideal people such as Albert Einstein, Jane Addams, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Frederick Douglass rather than mentally sick or unstable people.
