While electoral participation is a traditional topic in political science, voter turnout at the local level is still largely uncharted. There are very few large-N comparative works on municipal turnout and, as a result, a lack of a comprehensive comparative picture of local electoral participation. This book aims to fill that gap by taking an innovative approach to the topic. The volume makes three major advances at the empirical, methodological and theoretical levels. Empirically, it provides a large-N comparison by covering 18 European countries and more than 70,000 municipalities. Methodologically, the book uses the multi-level congruence theory to study municipal turnout in relation to national turnout, exploring the variation between those levels. Theoretically, it bridges the two main (and often mutually exclusive) strands in the literature on local elections ¿ the lower-rank and different-kind approaches ¿ and it assesses the features and mechanisms of local voting.

This text examines the differentiated occupation of administrative posts within the African Union. It starts from the observation that not all states are represented in the same way, despite the principle of sovereign equality that governs international organisations. He explores the hypothesis that the optimal occupation of posts within the African Union can be explained by the military strength of the member states. In other words, the stronger a state is militarily, the more administrative posts its nationals occupy within the African Union. Using both a quantitative and qualitative approach, he demonstrates that military strength influences the appointment and election of officials to this institution. In the light of these results, he validates the realist axiom of international anarchy while celebrating the marriage between realist and constructivist theories often presented as antinomic. Indeed, his results show that if certain states are over-represented within the Union, it is because their military strength gives them the necessary respect and esteem.

However, whilst scholars and commentators alike have heard that complain millions of times, we may not have taken it as seriously as we should. The author takes the concept of democratic frustration literally and puts it under an unprecedented analytical and empirical microscope. She applies insights from the psychology and political science literatures and uses a mixture of panel studies, surveys, interviews, and experiments to understand its sources, nature, dimensions, and consequences. An international group of scholars interrogates how and why populists engage with the past. Twelve case studies focus on uses of history and memory by populist movements across the globe - ranging from Brazil to Bangladesh, from Poland to Tanzania. This book examines the strategies of regional powers in the Middle East regarding their response to cases of state failure in the region, thus connecting the theoretical concepts of statehood, state failure, and revisionist and pro-status quo interventionist behavior. Through a detailed comparative analysis of five case studies of failed states occurring in the region during 1960¿2010s ¿Yemen (1962¿1970), Lebanon (1975¿1989), Iraq (2003¿2020), Yemen (2004¿2020), and Syria (2011¿2020) ¿ the author employs the conceptual theory of balance of power to analyze the behavior of six regional powers in the Middle East: Egypt, Iran, Israel, Syria (pre-2011), Saudi Arabia, and Turkey toward each one of those cases. The book proposes that when states become failed states, regional powers with revisionist strategies expand into them, which in turn induce status quo regional powers to react by imposing balancing action, and that this power struggle turns failed states into battlegrounds for regional power (im)balances. This book offers empirical and theoretical insights into regional politics of the Middle East over the past six decades, contributes to international policy and security studies scholarship from a Middle East regional perspective, and draws attention to the importance of analyzing the destabilizing and historical consequences of state failures for contemporary contexts.

This book presents a new step farther into the twenty-first century, for the first time truly combining a comprehensive global data analysis with social policy theory development. The theory of global ideal-typical welfare regimes, also known as the ¿Ten Worlds of Welfare Regime Theory¿, as set forth earlier by Christian Aspalter, is now in this book tested empirically using a quantitative global data analysis for the first time. The strong and rich results fully vindicated the Ten Worlds Theory. All in all, about 150 countries are included in this test, measuring numerous variables on two main dimensions, i.e., povertization and inequality. The innovative approach of using a new indicator, Aspalter¿s Standardized Relative Performance Index, is applied, which facilitated the exact measurements of distances between relative performances of each variable, each dimension, each country, and each ideal-typical welfare regime (in relation to one another, respectively). Decidim is the world leading digital infrastructure for participatory democracy, built entirely and collaboratively as free software, and used by more than 500 institutions with over three million users worldwide.The platform allows any organization (government, association, university, NGO, neighbourhood, or cooperative) to support multitudinous processes of participatory democracy. In a context dominated by corporate-owned digital platforms, in the era of increasing social structuring via Artificial Intelligence, Decidim stands as a public or community owned platform for collective human intelligence. Yet, the project is much more than its technological features. Decidim is in itself a crossroad of the various dimensions of the networked society, a detailed practical map of its complexities and conflicts. Le régime féodal de la Chine ancienne est très mal connu. Les documents contemporains sont rares et peu explicites : les inscriptions, difficiles à déchiffrer, et le plus souvent d¿une brièveté qui les rend très obscures, ne sont pas toujours compréhensibles pour nous, lorsqüelles sortent des formules banales et parlent de faits que nous ignorons. Quant aux documents littéraires (101), remontant à l¿époque féodale, Yi-king (Livre de Divination), Che-king (Livre des Odes), Chou-king (Livre des Documents), ils ne mentionnent les institutions qüen passant. Confucius et Mo-tseu ont vu la fin des temps féodaux, mais Confucius n¿a laissé aucun écrit et ses Entretiens (Louen-yu) ont été rédigés par ses disciples un siècle au moins après sa mort ; et quant à Mo-tseu, son ¿uvre a été retouchée par ses disciples pendant les deux siècles suivants. Les textes historiques les plus anciens, Tch¿ouen-ts¿ieou et Tchou-chou ki-nien, sont, au plus tôt des derniers temps de ce régime, alors qüil n¿en subsistait plus guère que quelques formes extérieures ; et d¿ailleurs, ce sont des chroniques très sèches qui ne nous apprennent presque rien. Les livres qui fournissent le plus de renseignements sont les Rituels (Li-ki, Tcheou-li) et les grands ouvrages historiques (Tso-tchouan, Kouo-yu) ; mais ils sont très tardifs (IIIe siècle A. C.) et au temps où ils furent écrits, le régime féodal antique avait entièrement disparu. Le Li-ki (Mémoires sur les Rites) est un recueil d¿opuscules ritualistes confucéens rédigés, les plus anciens, à la fin du IVe siècle, les plus récents, au début du Ier siècle avant notre ère ; les lettrés qui les ont composés ont utilisé les traditions relatives à l¿antiquité pour construire un régime utopique de gouvernement en complétant systématiquement en séries régulières les faits conformes à leurs théories, et en laissant de côté les autres. Le Tcheou-li (Rituel des Tcheou), d¿autre part, est une glorification du pouvoir royal qui lui aussi pousse la systématisation très loin, mais qui a l¿avantage de ne pas avoir fait subir aux faits de déformation confucianiste. Le Tso-tchouan et le Kouo-yu apportent des documents moins travaillés ; ils sont fondés en grande partie sur des ouvrages plus anciens ; et comme ils ne cherchent pas à faire du ritualisme systématique, ils déforment moins les faits que les Rituels. De tous ces ouvrages, le plus facile à consulter est le Li-ki dont certains chapitres, surtout avec leurs Commentaires, sont très clairs et très précis ; aussi est-ce de lui qüon s¿est le plus souvent servi pour décrire les institutions féodales chinoises anciennes. Mais, en dehors des rites et des cérémonies usuels et courants, c¿est la source la moins sûre : s¿il contient certainement des faits vrais, nous n¿avons aucun critérium pour les distinguer des faits d¿imagination. J¿ai donc entièrement laissé de côté ce livre ; je me suis servi avant tout des inscriptions, ainsi que du Che-king, du Chou-king, du Yi-king, documents contemporains des faits étudiés, et même aussi des historiens (y compris le Tso-tchouan, malgré sa date récente), en ne tenant compte que des faits matériels, mais non des interprétations et des explications qüils peuvent donner.
