These contributions offer fundamental insights into how literary works address and reconceptualize issues of nationalism, groupism, belonging and denationalization in selected European contexts. Various critical perspectives are employed here to highlight modern social and political processes as registered and, to a certain extent, also fashioned by contemporary literary discourses. 'Reimagined communities' emerge from literary redescriptions of existing or imaginary sociopolitical configurations in several European states or regions. All the contributions share a heightened sensitivity to the individual as enmeshed in oppressive geopolitical circumstances. Thereby, literary expressions of how individuality is constrained by social pressures may offer inspiring blueprints for emancipation.

"From the author of Cults, Conspiracies, and Secret Societies, a probing exploration of the bizarre and dangerous conspiracies that have roiled America over the past decade and captured the minds of so many Americans. Among the more disturbing recent trends in politics is the unholy marriage of the Republican Party and virulent conspiracy theories. These theories not only contest the outcome of the 2020 presidential election and the allegiance of American officials, but they also claim that the ship stuck in the Suez Canal in 2021 contained children sex-trafficked for Hillary Clinton and that John F. Kennedy Jr. faked his death and will one day make his return. Who is susceptible to such absurdities, and what makes them so politically potent? Investigating recent conspiracy theories and their historical forebears, Arthur Goldwag helps us make sense of the senseless. As he dissects these strange beliefs and answers the broader question of why so many Americans have fallen prey to them, three uncomfortable truths emerge: that the theories espoused by Trump have roots as deep in our heritage as Enlightenment principles, that these right-wing movements and beliefs will outlive the Trump era just as they preceded it, and that the contention that the system is 'rigged' is not altogether false. The real question is: For whom is it rigged, and why? A considered, surprising, and critical examination of America's paranoid style in the modern era, The Politics of Fear delves into the minds of Americans who hold some of the most absurd, confounding, and dangerous beliefs"--

The thin lines dividing Nationalism, Patriotism and Chauvinism are often blurred. We look at the world primarily in terms of diverse nationalities and people we interact with are categorised as 'We' and 'They'. We define friends and enemies and neutral alliance accordingly", is the core of book. In this monograph Yuvraj has made a serious effort to find his way through a bewiildring maze of ideas, historical events, comments made by others scholars to get a grasp of what Nationalism means.

Nationalism has long been a normatively and empirically contested concept, associated with democratic revolutions and public goods provision, but also with xenophobia, genocide, and wars. Moving beyond facile distinctions between 'good' and 'bad' nationalisms, the authors argue that nationalism is an empirically variegated ideology. Definitional disagreements, Eurocentric conceptualizations, and linear associations between ethnicity and nationalism have hampered our ability to synthesize insights. This Element proposes that nationalism can be broken down productively into parts based on three key questions: (1) Does a nation exist? (2) How do national narratives vary? (3) When do national narratives matter? The answers to these questions generate five dimensions along which nationalism varies: elite fragmentation and popular fragmentation of national communities; ascriptiveness and thickness of national narratives; and salience of national identities.

Argues that nationalism and ethnic conflict can be used as strategies to achieve power and influence With a new introductory theoretical chapter, the book collects thoroughly revised nine articles and book chapters based on Pål Kolstø's thirty years of study of nationalism and ethnic conflict in post-Soviet states. Kolstø examines how the drivers behind ethnic conflicts in the non-Russian republics were not only struggle for collective identities but also more mundane interests, such as competition for jobs and positions. He also analyses the transformations of Russian nationalism, both among the ruling elite and in the opposition, with a particular focus on the use of symbolism. Exploring nationalism as a pervasive feature of politics in the modern world, Kolstø argues that both state leaders and 'ethnic entrepreneurs' employ nationalist rhetoric and stratagems to further their political agendas and achieve particular goals. He examines some of the ways this is used as a political strategy and focuses both on nationalism at the societal level and as a state strategy. Pål Kolstø is Professor of Russian and post-Soviet studies at the University of Oslo, Norway.

«An original, personal, powerful book. Anyone interested in contemporary Northern Ireland will gain much from reading it.»(Richard English, Professor of Politics and Director, Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice, Queen¿s University Belfast)«Goldie provides us with a theoretically informed and empirically rich analysis of the fragile dynamics of post-conflict in Northern Ireland. Looking «away from the clean streets and shining glass» she reveals the deep and dark complexity of transitional processes but clearly maps out the need to bring politics, violence, communities and policy into relation in building a more durable and inclusive peace.»(Brendan Murtagh, Professor of Urban Planning, Queen¿s University Belfast)Rioting at Belfast interfaces in 2021 sparked fears of renewed conflict. A tour around these contested places some days later raised fundamental questions about the peace process. Why was violence still erupting here? Weren¿t sectarian interfaces supposed to have gone with the reforms in governance and legal changes enshrined in the Belfast Agreement? The untidy truth about urban development, continuous violent protest and paramilitary activity sits uncomfortably alongside orchestrated protests against the Irish sea border, the legacy of conflict, the abuse of flags and emblems, slow reform of public administration and lack of political leadership necessary to peace-building. This book provides an extensive history of key components of the Northern Ireland peace process, possible answers to long standing vexed questions and some light under dark shadows.

  • af Konstantin Rodzaevsky

Testament of a Russian Fascist contains the collected writings of the obscure and fascinating figure of Konstantin Vladimirovich Rodzaevsky, the leader of the long extinct All-Russian Fascist Party. Born in 1907, Rodzevsky lived through a turbulent time, going through the Russian Revolution as an adolescent and escaping the USSR at the age of eighteen to Manchuria, nominally under Chinese control at the time. There, he and numerous other Russians lived in exile, watching with horror across the border at the transformation of their motherland under the Soviet Union. In his writings, Rodzaevsky offers a rare insight into the mindset and ideology of the Russian far-right during the interwar era and presents a historical account of what he sees as a force that destroyed Russia and, with the Russian people in chains, seeks to dominate the entire world. Drawing on his personal experiences as well as historical events, Rodzaevsky traces the roots of the dark power that first took over the West and then Russia and explores the potential of a global fascist revolution. This book is not just a piece of journalism or even a political manifesto, but it also delves into the personal struggles and tragedies of Rodzaevsky's life and the Russian people, showcasing the complex motivations that drove him to embrace fascism as the future for his people. Antelope Hill Publishing is proud to present Testament of a Russian Fascist translated for the first time into English. Relevant to this day, the obscure memory of Rodzaevsky sheds light on the complex and unique relationship between fascism and Russia.
