The war in Ukraine has altered the course of global history. These authors explore how. When Vladimir Putin's forces sought to conquer Ukraine in February 2022, they did more than threaten the survival of a vulnerable democracy. The invasion unleashed a crisis that has changed the course of world affairs. This conflict has reshaped alliances, deepened global cleavages, and caused economic disruptions that continue to reverberate around the globe. It has initiated the first great-power nuclear crisis in decades and raised fundamental questions about the sources of national power and military might in the modern age. The outcome of the conflict will profoundly influence the international balance of power, the relationship between democracies and autocracies, and the rules that govern global affairs. In War in Ukraine, Hal Brands brings together an all-star cast of analysts to assess the conflict's origins, course, and implications and to offer their appraisals of one of the most geopolitically consequential crises of the early twenty-first century. Essays cover topics including the twists and turns of the war itself, the successes and failures of US strategy, the impact of sanctions, the future of Russia and its partnership with China, and more.Contributors: Anne Applebaum, Joshua Baker, Alexander Bick, Hal Brands, Daniel Drezner, Peter Feaver, Lawrence Freedman, Francis Gavin, Brian Hart, William Inboden, Andrea Kendall-Taylor, Michael Kimmage, Michael Kofman, Stephen Kotkin, Mark Leonard, Bonny Lin, Thomas Mahnken, Dara Massicot, Michael McFaul, Robert Person, Kori Schake, and Ashley Tellis.

It is my sincere desire in this writing to somehow inspire action by those who read it. At this writing, our nation teeters on the edge of a knife. Elements of destruction from within, I feel, have never been so strong in America's history. We are, I fear, one step from losing the rights and freedoms provided to us by our Founding Fathers. I see the very fabric of our constitution under attack by a government where all power lies in the coercive efforts of the few or just one! This situation should scare any red-blooded American and stir up a righteous anger toward it. Are we to become a nation run by despotic rulers, where the common man is just a subject or a country of nation-states similar to that of old Europe, where we are red versus blue? May God forbid! Here I will attempt to give justice to the subjects covered. My goal is not just to state facts and figures, although these are included, but to draw out and put forward the wisdom of those great men and women who founded this country and wrote its governing edicts. I have found that seldom will a person take the time and put forth the effort to investigate for themselves what really is the truth. I am not judging here, as I was guilty of the same problem. But what I have found out over the years since I took charge of my own inputs is, truth is truth and can never be untruth, no matter what the subject. When I look at our great nation today, I wonder if what it has to offer those who immigrate to it has not diminished. Is there truly an offering of real freedoms, rights, and opportunities, or is this just smoke and mirrors, with the reality being that our nation is headed toward the problems that many are trying to get away from? America is quickly losing its grip on the constitutional framework it was built upon. Our freedoms demand that we all do our part to reestablish it.The question remains: Will complacency prevail, or will America wake up? Choose!

By the winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Economics, an essential and paradigm-altering framework for understanding economic development--for both rich and poor--in the twenty-first century. Freedom, Sen argues, is both the end and most efficient means of sustaining economic life and the key to securing the general welfare of the world's entire population. Releasing the idea of individual freedom from association with any particular historical, intellectual, political, or religious tradition, Sen clearly demonstrates its current applicability and possibilities. In the new global economy, where, despite unprecedented increases in overall opulence, the contemporary world denies elementary freedoms to vast numbers--perhaps even the majority of people--he concludes, it is still possible to practically and optimistically restain a sense of social accountability. Development as Freedom is essential reading.

This book examines the lives of children and young adults living in residential care systems in Zimbabwe and their unique conceptualization of family. While the importance of family for the development and wellbeing of children can't be overemphasized, the questions of what and who counts as family to orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) are under-researched. Gwenzi brings a social constructionist approach to study OVCs in institutional care as well as living with their families in Zimbabwe, finding that they do not have a single definition of family and that they use diverse characteristics to describe what family means to them. With the data suggesting a need for belonging, continuity of relationships, protection, and trust, this study makes recommendations for policy and practice with youth in alternative care in sub-Saharan Africa.

Yorkshire 2035 - The New assembly, is the final book in The Yorkshire Trilogy, completing the journey from feasibility study (Yorkshire, The Case For Independence), through gaining a degree of recognition (Yorkshire 2027, A Strategy For Tomorrow) to finally achieving influence. The book picks up from 2027, a time when the ruling party's majority was slim and they were either over-ruled on new legislation or proved themselves quite incapable of managing a collapsing economy, artificial intelligence and crumbling infrastructure. The political cycle was turning from a period of negative decisions (you can't do that) and excessive documentation (we have a plan - several plans) to a time when experimentation, innovation and novelty at last escaped from the bottle and a new period of positive activity began - and now with Yorkshire at the forefront. The story is of Yorkshire rising above the chaos and ineptitude of Westminster to create its own assembly, a written constitution and a local currency; activities that served as the foundation stones of a system that embraced and developed a vibrant and challenging future. A movement that restored dignity, liberty and freedom to the people of Yorkshire - at last shaking off a detached elite, languishing some 200 miles away in London. Join in. Enjoy.

Climate Liberalism examines the potential and limitations of classical-liberal approaches to pollution control and climate change. Some successful environmental strategies, such as the use of catch-shares for fisheries, instream water rights, and tradable emission permits, draw heavily upon the classical liberal intellectual tradition and its emphasis on property rights and competitive markets. This intellectual tradition has been less helpful, to date, in the development or design of climate change policies. Climate Liberalism aims to help fill the gap in the academic literature examining the extent to which classical-liberal principles, including an emphasis on property rights, decentralized authority and dynamic markets, can inform the debate over climate-change policies. The contributors in this book approach the topic from a range of perspectives and represent multiple academic disciplines. Chapters consider the role of property rights and common-law legal systems in controlling pollution, the extent to which competitive markets backed by legal rules encourage risk minimization and adaptation, and how to identify the sorts of policy interventions that may help address climate change in ways that are consistent with liberal values.

A fast-paced account of America's plunge into simultaneous cold wars against two very different adversaries - Xi Jinping's China and Valdimir Putin's Russia.New Cold Wars - the latest from Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and bestselling author of The Perfect Weapon David E. Sanger - tells the riveting story of America at a crossroads. At the turn of the millennium, the United States was confident that a democratic Russia and a newly wealthy China could gradually be pulled into the Western-led order. That proved a fantasy. By the time Washington emerged from the age of terrorism, the three nuclear powers were engaged in a high-stakes struggle for military, economic, and technological supremacy - with nations around the world forced to take sides.Interviewing a remarkable array of top officials in the United States, world leaders, and tech companies thrust onto the front lines, Sanger unfolds a riveting narrative spun around the era's critical questions. Will Putin's ill-considered invasion of Ukraine prove his undoing, and will he reach for his nuclear arsenal? Will China strike back at the US chip embargo, or seize Taiwan, the world's semiconductor capital?Taking readers from the battlefields of Ukraine - where trench warfare and cyberwarfare are fought side by side - to the back rooms and boardrooms where diplomats, spies, and tech executives jockey for geopolitical advantage, New Cold Wars is an astonishing first-draft history chronicling America's return to superpower conflict, the choices that lie ahead, and what is at stake for the United States and the world.

This Compendium was conceived as a ¿pocket compass¿, a practical guide that may help readers to orientate themselves while they explore global affairs and attempt to make sense of the highly interconnected, multidimensional challenges of contemporary human development. The book is intended to be an accessible, concise, yet comprehensive reference for anyone who hopes to better understand today¿s world and its dramatic complexity. The aim is to highlight a relevant selection of the demographic, socio-economic, geo-political, and environmental macro-dynamics that define our time, and to explore in a practical way the indicators that can be used to monitor their evolution over time.  In general, this project stems from the need to apply ¿systemic thinking¿ to the study of the world and to develop a holistic perspective that can bridge the gap that for too long has existed across academic disciplines and their respective focuses. The macro-trends featured in the book shed light, in particular, on the change that has been occurring over time in the vast Global South ¿ a portion of the globe that accounts for over 80% of the world¿s total population. The book¿s ultimate ¿ although not exclusive ¿ target audience is undoubtedly composed of undergraduate students of subjects such as political science, international affairs, international development, human geography and the like. In addition, the Compendium may benefit professionals in both public and private organisations as well as members of the general public seeking to acquire "global development literacy" in manners that are academically sound, but also accessible and concise.

To get ahead today, you have to be a jerk, right?Divisive politicians. Hateful pundits. Angry campus activists. Twitter trolls. Today in America there is an ?outrage industrial complex? that prospers by setting American against American, creating a ?culture of contempt??the habit of seeing people who disagree with us not as merely incorrect, but as worthless and defective. Maybe, like more than nine out of ten Americans, you dislike it. But, hey, either you play along or you'll be left behind, right?Wrong. In Love Your Enemies, the New York Times bestselling author and social scientist Arthur C. Brooks shows that abuse and outrage are not the right formula for lasting success. Brooks blends cutting-edge behavioral research, ancient wisdom, and a decade of experience leading one of America's top policy think tanks in a work that offers a better way to lead based on bridging divides and mending relationships.Brooks's prescriptions are unconventional. To bring America together, we shouldn't try to agree more. There is no need for mushy moderation, because disagreement is the secret to excellence. Civility and tolerance shouldn't be our goals, because they are hopelessly low standards. And our feelings toward our foes are irrelevant; what matters is how we choose to act.Love Your Enemies offers a clear strategy for victory for a new generation of leaders. It is a rallying cry for people hungry for a new era of American progress. Most of all, it is a road map to find the happiness that comes when we choose to love one another, despite our differences.
