Victims of sexual assault and sexual harassment often experience a variety of psychological outcomes and mental health symptoms related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, substance abuse, suicidal ideation, and self-harm. Sexual trauma also might affect careers. Despite a need to address these harms, some service members have reported that connecting to health care or mental health services following sexual assault or sexual harassment can be difficult-in part because of a lack of leadership support. Given these persistent challenges, the Psychological Health Center of Excellence identified an urgent need to better understand research that is pertinent to sexual assault and sexual harassment during military service so that the U.S. Department of Defense and the military services can improve the health care response for service members. RAND researchers investigated and synthesized relevant research in three topic areas: (1) the effectiveness of psychotherapy treatments designed for adult victims of sexual assault or sexual harassment in military settings; (2) barriers faced by U.S. military members to accessing and remaining in mental health care settings; and (3) associations between sexual assault or sexual harassment and mental health conditions.
This report summarizes a review of clinical practices and TRICARE requirements for intensive outpatient programs to treat active-duty members affected by the mental health consequences of sexual harassment and sexual assault while in the military.
After years of alcohol abuse, Raldo Cisneros, a former Marine, is desperate to rekindle his strained relationship with his young daughter. He gets back on his feet and begins working security for a billionaire financier only to discover a dark secret that he feels may cost him his soul. Through the help of his former Navy chaplain - a suffering soul in his own right - Raldo comes to face-to-face with the decision of his life and will be forced to risk it all for those he loves most.
This report presents an analysis of the implications of flexible spending accounts for active-duty service members and their families that would allow pre-tax payment of dependent care expenses, insurance premiums, and out-of-pocket medical expenses.
After serving a 1 1/2 year tour in Vietnam with the 1st Cavalry Division and surviving a total of 8 years, 9 months and 21 Days in the US Army, Russ Warriner learned he had PTSD. Dealing with the Combat Memories he calls Combat Demons is a lifelong struggle. Writing about my combat life and the aftermath has become one of his outlets. Becoming a life member of many veteran groups as well as starting a group that served in my type of unit and starting a POW/MIA weekend event has served me well to deal with the demons. Everyone who has PTSD deals with these demons in their own way. If this book can help at least one person to understand PTSD or help them deal with their demons, I feel it was worth the effort I put into writing it.
On Valentine's Day 1968, Kilo Company 3/9 left Ca Lu Combat in Vietnam on a combat patrol mission. Suddenly, as the Marines scaled the ridge in search of the enemy, chaos erupted. During a ferocious fiery attack from the North Vietnamese Army, ten Marines and Senior Corpsman HM2 Larry Jo Goss were killed. Two more Marines died later. While Larry's body lay in the humid jungle for twenty-one days, his young wife, Marty, was only told that her husband was "MIA" and possibly taken by hostile forces. Desperately hoping and praying that Larry was still alive. Marty waited in agony with their six-month-old daughter, Lori Jo, for the good news that would never come.As she grew into adulthood, Lori Goss began a decades-long search for her father's comrades and the truth about her father's death. It would take her two trips to Vietnam and many long conversations with veterans of the battle to finally piece together the puzzle she had been aching to complete her whole life.
Dog Tag Inc. is a nonprofit organization that seeks to help veterans, their spouses, and those who serve as their caregivers reintegrate into civilian life. The organization runs the Dog Tag Inc. Fellowship Program, a five-month entrepreneurial fellowship program designed to enhance reintegration into civilian entrepreneurial and employment opportunities. This report describes research to help Dog Tag Inc. better understand how its fellowship program shapes the careers and life trajectories of its alumni. The authors first conducted focus groups and interviews with program alumni to better understand their experience with the fellowship. Using this information, as well as existing quantitative data on Dog Tag Inc. alumni outcomes, the authors worked with Dog Tag Inc. to revise the organization's existing alumni survey to more adequately and meaningfully capture the longitudinal impacts of the Dog Tag Inc. Fellowship Program at scale. They then fielded two waves of the revised survey in 2020 and 2021, the results of which are presented here and complemented by qualitative data. In addition to providing valuable information to Dog Tag Inc. as the organization continues to expand and refine its programming, these findings are likely to be of interest to other organizations serving veterans, spouses, and caregivers.

So Help Me God presents twenty-one realistic combat accounts shared from the vivid memories of heroes who lived to tell them. Yet, deep from the memories of each hero we have the rare privilege to experience what they saw, said, and did each time the "death angel" knocked on their doorstep. From gripping details mixed through tears and painful memories, we "feel" the anxiety Doc felt as he frantically tries to save the life of an innocent child, wounded by the savagery of hidden bombs. We gasp in horror as Khmer Rouge goons torment Chou Te's humble, innocent family. We feel the tension in Leo as German boots walk within mere inches of his hidden hand, hiding from them in moments of darkness. Visually swim underwater with Don, approaching the shores of Iwo Jima. Learn of Betty Lynn's (Thelma Lou of the Andy Griffith show) heroic service during WWII. Be inspired by these heroes, touched, led, and protected by the hand of God. It is a rare talent where an individual, through his own military experiences, can recognize and illuminate another veteran's honor to serve his country. Jerry Barnes possesses that God-given talent. -Edwin N. LeGard, Commander, United States Navy, (Ret)
