Democratic planning allows us to effectively address the multiple crises of our time through cooperative modes of collective coordination. Given the destructive consequences of contemporary capitalism, such a structural alternative to market economies is needed more than ever. This accessible work examines various approaches that theorise, practise and nurture a creative construction towards varieties of democratic planning. Drawing from current socio-economic and ecological movements, it explores what future non-capitalist democratic planning could look like. Bringing together important voices in the ongoing debates from scholars to activists, this volume proposes an interdisciplinary and innovative approach to democratic planning in the 21st century and beyond.

Internationale Investoren in Ostdeutschland Die rapide Massenprivatisierung der ostdeutschen Wirtschaft nach der "Wende" ging zu keinem Zeitpunkt allein von der alten Bundesrepublik aus. Keith R. Allen schildert in seiner englischsprachigen Studie das Engagement von Akteuren aus dem Ausland - vor allem aus Westeuropa - als Investoren, als Rat- und Kapitalgeber sowie als Mitentscheider über erhebliche Beihilfen von Land und Bund. Es geht nicht darum zu bewerten, was bei der Übernahme der ostdeutschen Wirtschaft durch die Bundesrepublik falsch - oder möglicherweise richtig - gelaufen ist. Vielmehr zeigt diese Studie, dass die Marktentwicklungen im Deutschland der 1990er Jahre eng mit Akteuren, Ereignissen und Interessen in westeuropäischen Ländern und den USA verknüpft waren. "Structure, Agency and Theory" challenges common readings of Marx' and Engels' historical materialism and argues the necessity of abandoning their conception of the dialectic of forces and relations of production as the motive power of historical development and transformations because of its doubtful validity and deterministic implications. Instead another fundamental conception in historical materialism, the interaction between social circumstances and agency as the motive power of history, is accentuated with an emphasis on agents' experiences as a causal factor, arguing its potential in terms of historical explanation, and attempting to spell out some of its strategic implications for revolutionary socialism.
