Criminal Careers follows the lives and criminal behaviours of 2,397 people in Poland who as juveniles committed a crime and received a form of punishment from the juvenile court between the late 1980s and the year 2000. Through combining quantitative and qualitative research, their criminal careers, the differences between men and women, risk factors, and reasons for nondesistance are analysed.Uniquely, the authors have used an extensive database of former juveniles, in which as many as 40% were women. This book therefore makes a comparison between women and men in terms of their future life paths. Additionally, the researched group consisted of teenagers from two different periods: the 1980s (the transition generation) and 2000 (the millennial generation), which in the context of Central and Eastern European countries means that they entered adulthood in completely different realities. These differences are therefore also explored in depth within the book.By focusing on Poland, the book provides a different perspective to criminal career research, which is generally limited to a few countries in Western Europe and the United States.The book will be of great interest to academics and students who are developing their own research in the fields of criminal careers, juvenile delinquency, and antisocial behaviours by young people. Terrorism has become one of the central security concerns of our time, presenting governments and citizens alike with a variety of policy and public safety challenges. Yet the subject also presents intellectual and pedagogic challenges for those seeking to study and understand it. Adequately comprehending terrorism requires an inherently multi-disciplinary approach that often does not fit neatly into existing academic disciplines; even when taught through the lens of a particular discipline, such as criminology or political science, it is still necessary for students to engage with a broad array of concepts from behavioral science and humanities fields as diverse as psychology, history, economics, communications, and anthropology. Moreover, as a highly dynamic and protean phenomenon at the forefront of public policy, new concepts and concerns arise regularly, thus necessitating pedagogic materials that keep pace with the latest incarnations of terrorism. To cite just two pertinent examples, merely a decade ago, topics like "homegrown radicalization" and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) did not even exist in the academic or policy lexicon surrounding terrorism; furthermore, these topics, which today are central to understanding the terrorist threat, require knowledge and theories from psychology and chemistry, both of which are beyond the disciplines most commonly associated with terrorism studies, namely criminology, political science, international relations, and history.Unfortunately, extant texts for undergraduates in terrorism-related classes have not adequately met these challenges. First, the vast majority of current texts used in terrorism courses are not true textbooks (see detailed exposition below), but are rather edited volumes or in-depth narratives. With respect to terrorism studies, at least, these are less suitable as introductions for an undergraduate audience because they tend by their nature to focus on only limited aspects of what is a wide-ranging topic and thereby leave gaps that can impair the development of the necessary instructional foundation. Second, many of the (especially older) texts do not reflect the most current subtopics or research in terrorism, since both the phenomenon itself and scholarship thereon have evolved rapidly in the past decade. Third, existing texts tend to place most of their emphasis on a single facet of terrorism (such as its historical development), with negligible attention paid to equally important aspects (such as the sociological context of radicalization) and thereby lack the balanced approach needed for an introductory text on the subject.Courses on terrorism offered at the undergraduate level have proliferated since 9/11, as well as undergraduate programs of study (including majors, minors, and certificate courses). However, there are few textbooks written for undergraduates that provide good empirical and theoretical foundations for the study of terrorism. The proposed textbook would be more broadly interdisciplinary in scope than existing texts on the market, but at the same time would be configured to satisfy the disciplinary requirements of all of these disciplines.

This interdisciplinary book constitutes the first major and comparative study of resilience focused on victims-/survivors of conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV).

Drawing on in-depth research, including interviews with former and serving detectives, this book explores how homicide investigation in England and Wales has changed since the 1980s and the opportunities and challenges that have arisen as a consequence. The investigation of homicide in England and Wales became subject to significant reform in the 1980s, when the inquiry into the Yorkshire Ripper investigation identified numerous failings in how the hunt for Peter Sutcliffe was conducted. These investigations have been subject to criticism and change from that moment onwards. This book explores how change has shaped every facet of these investigations, with four main areas identified: science and technology; legislation, regulation and guidance; investigative practice; and lastly, detective status and culture. The work shows that change has been the result of four primary catalysts: a growing preoccupation with risk, the changing political landscape, reactions to miscarriages of justice and other cases, and advances in science and technology. What has been lost and gained as a result of change is also explored. It has, in many ways, been positive as scientific and technological advances allow investigators to plot an offender's movements and draw a clearer picture of what transpired. However, change has created today's more risk-averse homicide detectives, who must manage the vast amounts of technological information that modern-day investigations now generate.
