Double-outlet right ventricle (DORV) represents a great challenge for cardiac surgeons due to the absence of standard surgical approach and this book is the first complete manual detailing decision-making in all anatomical types of DORV: subaortic, subpulmonary, subarterial and noncommitted defects. It provides information regarding the molecular mechanisms and clinical consequences of the most important syndromes in patients with cyanotic congenital heart defects, arterial hypoxemia and myocardial remodeling.Double-Outlet Right Ventricle explains the most important operations using real anatomical specimens. This helps readers to understand these surgical principles from a surgeon¿s perspective. All operations are described according to indication, timing, intracardiac revision (structures that should be accessed during an operation), surgical technique, advantages and disadvantages. The book is therefore of importance to all cardiac surgeons and healthcare professionals working with this group of patients.
This atlas provides a comprehensive overview of the current techniques practised in a leading cardiac surgical institution. It offers an up-to-date review of procedures, authored by foremost surgeons in each specialist area. Richly illustrated, its aim is to serve as an appealing ¿go-tö text for training and practising cardiac surgeons.
This is the first of a three-volume project aimed at providing unique case reports (20 cases per volume) of a large number of supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias encountered in clinical practice. The book is focused on the treatment of supraventricular arrhythmias, namely focal atrial tachycardias, typical and atypical AVNRT and accessory pathways (both manifest and concealed). All presented-cases were performed using the CARTO electro-anatomical mapping system, which allows the reader to better understand the arrhythmia features due to the high number of images provided.A large number of high-quality figures, which represent the core of the authors' work, enrich the contents: all cases are built around suggestive figures acquired during the patients' hospitalization, which clearly illustrate important concepts used in catheter ablation of cardiac arrhythmias. The figures are not only related to the catheter ablation procedure, but also to the patient history, thus helping the reader to place the invasive treatment of the arrhythmias into clinical context: electrocardiograms, Holter ECGs, signal-averaged ECGs, chest X-Rays, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography images, MRI, CT scans, coronary angiography images are provided when considered relevant, in order to better present the patient's condition. Short videoclips with activation maps of the atria or the ventricles during the studied arrhythmia complete the information provided.Teaching-oriented, all chapters include questions and answers and key messages at the end of each case. For this reason, it will be an invaluable tool for cardiologists, clinical cardiac electrophysiologists, and interventional cardiac electrophysiologists in training, but also for all those interested in learning more about the subject.
This account of the heroic efforts to operate meaningfully within the deformed heart constitutes one of the greatest stories ever told. The surgeons were deemed psychopaths, the body count enormous. Yet with persistence and innovation those surgeons and their heart-lung machines ultimately triumphed. Professor Stephen Westaby trained with, then worked alongside, these pioneers on both sides of the Atlantic allowing him to write the most accurate, most exclusive, most insightful history of this taxing specialty.
The book covers 75 autopsy-based cases (about 75) of common and uncommon presentations of various cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). It emphasizes the importance of the autopsies, which have played a pivotal role in the understanding of the pathology and hence the clinical manifestations of several CVDs. The book attempts to present the material from the perspective of the autopsy table. It uses the clinical data as the initial framework and the autopsy findings to develop a true understanding of the disease and the associated pathophysiology of the condition with final clinico-pathological correlation. Each case covers a complete journey of the deceased patient concisely under the following headings-title, clinical history, autopsy findings and discussion, which includes a brief review of the literature. The text is accompanied by relevant high-quality macroscopic and microscopic images. The book is relevant for specialists in pathology, cardiology, cardiac surgery, internal medicine, critical care and pediatrics
