The Queen of Heaven is extraordinarily difficult to find anywhere in history, but miraculously she is still there. As in the Old Testament where the women of the ancient Jewish settlement on Elephantine island in southern Egypt defended their worship of the Queen of Heaven, when they were dramatically confronted by the exiled prophet Jeremiah, for worshipping 'false' gods in the 6th century BCE. (Jeremiah 45:15-21). Who was this ancient 'Queen of Heaven' resident at this remote outpost of the Jewish faith in Elephantine? In this case, it was the goddess 'Anat', who shared the same Jewish temple as Yahweh. Anat was considered his equal - when not superior - by the Jewish worshippers who offered incense and other offerings to both, which they had been doing for over 200 years in peaceful harmony. Compelling links between ancient Egyptian sources and the Old Testament demonstrate that much of what we read in Genesis and Exodus today has been simply 'pasted and copied' from ancient Egyptian texts and legends. Including the 'Ten Commandments' which were - almost word for word - written down in the Egyptian Book of the Dead and known as the 'Declarations of Innocence', many thousands of years before the time of Moses and the Exodus, and then later copied onto the walls of Edfu temple. It is at this very same Edfu temple - where the Jewish mercenaries were often garrisoned - we find astonishing similarities between the festival of the 'Jewish Passover' and the Egyptian 'Festival of the Beautiful Reunion' where the goddess Hathor was reunited with her consort. We also follow some of the most powerful kings of the region whose devotion to Anat - their Queen of Heaven - was so intense that in response to hostile acts directed against her temples or sanctuaries, they and their massive armies trekked thousands of miles across hostile territory to destroy or subjugate those responsible, and then reinstall their beloved Queen, Anat, on the throne of Heaven.

What happens when we close our eyes for the very last time? The ancient Egyptians provide a fascinating answer to human life’s most enigmatic question. Over three millennia the rich river civilisation along the banks of the Nile develops funerary customs which enable the Egyptians to find their way to eternal life, where everyone who lives and dies is reborn. It all begins in the embalming workshop, where the dead are transformed into mummies. Chapter by chapter, the reader is initiated into how ancient Egyptians achieved immortality. A lost culture’s conception of death and its incredible burial customs are unfolded and explained, revealing a fantastic and compelling universe of myths and rituals. At first glance, it all appears alarmingly alien, but gradually it begins to make sense and speak to us across the many millennia. Published in conjunction with Moesgaard Museum’s special exhibition Ancient Egypt – Obsessed with life, this book can also be read as an independent introduction to the Egyptians’ conceptions of the afterlife. With contributions by Tine Bagh, Paul John Frandsen, Ole Herslund, Rune Nyord, Rune Olsen, Maxime Rageot, Sofie Schiødt, Philipp Stockhammer and Jørgen Podemann Sørensen.

Christianity's engagement with late antique culture. The specific focus is on the intricate relationship, interaction, and sometimes confrontation between Christianity and Hellenism. The chapter's objectives are twofold: first, to examine the reception of the relationship between Christianity and Hellenism in modern scholarship, and second, to assess John Chrysostom's role within this complex dynamic.John Chrysostom lived during a pivotal period when Christianity was gradually emerging as the dominant religion within the Roman Empire. His attitude towards Hellenism has historically provoked diverse responses. On one hand, some scholars view him as a proponent of the fruitful encounter between Christian teachings and Hellenic culture, asserting that he played a significant role in the assimilation of Greek culture into the burgeoning Christianity of his time. On the other hand, there are those who label him as a "champion of anti-Hellenism," a characterization that warrants further exploration.

What can the fall of Rome teach us about the decline of the West today? A historian and a political economist, both experts in their field, investigateOver the last three centuries, the West rose to dominate the planet. Then, suddenly, around the turn of the millennium, history reversed. Faced with economic stagnation and internal political division, the West has found itself in rapid decline. This is not the first time the global order has witnessed such a dramatic rise and fall. The Roman Empire followed a similar arc from dizzying power to disintegration - a fact that is more than a strange historical coincidence. In Why Empires Fall, historian Peter Heather and political economist John Rapley use this Roman past to think anew about the contemporary West, its state of crisis, and what paths we could take out of it.In this exceptional, transformative intervention, Heather and Rapley explore the uncanny parallels - and productive differences - between the two cases, moving beyond the familiar tropes of invading barbarians and civilizational decay to learn new lessons from ancient history. From 399 to 1999, the life cycles of empires, they argue, sow the seeds of their inevitable destruction. The era of western global domination has reached its end - so what comes next?

Heraldry & Faith is a magnificent work that provides great insight into the foundations of the art and history of heraldic representations. Heraldry is as ancient as the days. It is the system by which coats of arms and other armorial bearings are created and regulated. Lineage and faith are key factors in the creation of unique bearings. Many modern heraldic emblems, especially those in Freemasonry, have evolved from the ancient empires and maintain similar meanings to their ancient predecessors. The monuments which still survive to this date bear witness to this effect.

Ralf wanted to release himself from his past but had two problems. Firstly, he didn't know what that problem was and secondly, he didn't know how to get rid of whatever was holding him back. It was driving him to despair. After being introduced to The Instructor, Ralf, with his new friends, Steve and Maria, learnt how to release the past bounds, giving them mental freedom. They were introduced to the Minor and Major Mysteries, Hermeticism and Stoicism the Greeks developed and used for several thousand years. Doing something specific doesn't guarantee our wants in life but doing nothing usually ensures us less in return. The choice we have is whether we decide to take responsibility for the consequences we create or to let them take control of us through unregulated thoughts and fantasies. If that is the case, wouldn't it be better to act and influence ourselves accordingly and be selective in which way we want our life journey to go instead of reliving past events that no longer exist? Easier said than done. What would you do if you were in Ralf's situation?

What is the role of religious aspects in legitimizing or delegitimizing violence? The articles of this volume provide an important contribution to this crucial social and scholarly debate. Analysing a broad spectrum of case studies from antiquity, they focus on religious justifications or evaluations of recommended, performed, or forbidden acts of violence - regardless of the question of their historicity. Not only late antiquity and Christianity are considered, but also pre-Christian Greek and Roman civilizations, Judaism, literary myth, and atheism. The case studies cover the period from the fifth century BCE to the fifth century CE and a broad geographical scope extending from Gaul to Israel and Egypt. This volume offers new insights into a highly topical issue.
