The scale of the crisis demanded new ways of coping and new ideas about the role of government. The ideas that had dominated american thought about the relationship between the economy and government were now viewed to be outdated at best, dangerous at worst. This captivating history book aims to give you a better understanding of a period that contains many tragic stories yet powerful lessons. Discover a plethora of topics such asCauses of the great depressionThe depression and the hoover administrationThe election of 1932 and the rise of franklin rooseveltThe depression and american cultureSetbacks and detractorsLast steps toward recovery-and warAnd much more!As the story unfolds and people, at last, begin to emerge from the gloom of the depression, it portrays in subtle overtones the growing threat beyond our shores which inevitably erupted and lured our society along other roads. No other australian city suffered as much from the impact of world war ii as did brisbane. By the time the war ended the distinctive way of life, portrayed in this book, was gone forever leaving only memories of the depression days and nostalgia for the many blessings enjoyed by the people of the north.
Accounts from the fliers of the First World WarThe author of this book was a prolific writer on the subject of early aviation. As most students of the subject know, only eight years had passed since the Wright brothers had taken to the air before Italy used aircraft in warfare in Libya and less than a further three years before the great nations of Europe began fighting the conflict which became known as the Great War. So, inevitably, Middleton's focus was drawn to activities of the RFC, RAF and RNAS as its airmen fought their German and Turkish counterparts in the skies over the continent and the wider world. The principal book in this Leonaur edition was first published in 1918 and is essentially a collection of word 'sketches' describing the routines, adventures and battles of allied airmen during the war. Whilst it is decidedly partisan in its perspectives, Middleton was able to rely of first-hand experiences and access to recent records, so his work has become part of the invaluable record of that short lived period of aerial warfare fought in simple craft of timber, canvas and wire. The nineteen 'sketches' in the principal book are supported in this Leonaur edition by an extract from E. W Walters book, 'Heroic Airmen and their Exploits', which offers a host of other engaging reports on the fight for the skies from other sources.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

The Battle for Passchendaele on 12 October 1917 was one of the epic struggles of the First World War. British Field Marshal Douglas Haig allocated II ANZAC Corps to capture Passchendaele village, with Major General Monash's 3rd Australian Division and the New Zealand Division leading the attack. For both divisions the battle was a bloody debacle. Monash's division started the battle with 5800 men and, just 24 hours later, could only muster 2600, suffering horrendous losses for a small territorial gain which was later relinquished. The New Zealand Division was trapped in front of the German wire and barely moved from its start line, suffering one of its highest casualty rates of the war. Fought in conditions which seemed to preclude any chance of success, the battle has become a metaphor for pointless sacrifice. After the battle the British and Australian leadership were unanimous in placing blame for the defeat on the all-pervasive mud. Monash, writing to his wife, believed that his plan 'would have succeeded in normal conditions'. Yet, two weeks later, in similar weather and terrain, Lieutenant General Currie's Canadian Corps succeeded where Monash and Godley's II ANZAC Corps did not. The central focus of this book is a detailed analysis of the 3rd Australian Division's plan and execution of the attack on Passchendaele. By examining the differences between the Australian and Canadian plans for the capture of Passchendaele, the author casts this iconic battle in a completely different light. It is a re-examination that is long overdue.

This meticulously researched book provides the first comprehensive study of the employment of artillery and naval gunfire support at Anzac. Faced with huge difficulties on inferior ground the Australian, New Zealand, Indian, and British gunners quickly adapted to a hostile environment, employing innovative techniques to counter superior numbers of Ottoman artillery and provide fire support to their infantry and light horse colleagues. How well they performed is a central theme of The Artillery at Anzac. Using a host of primary sources including official manuals, war diaries, operation orders, letters, and private papers the authors trace the story of this neglected feature of the Gallipoli campaign. Commencing with an evaluation of the nascent pre-war Australian and New Zealand artillery, they take the reader through the testing introduction to the realities of modern warfare, the trials and difficulties the gunners experienced throughout the campaign, to the phased evacuation in December, without alerting the Ottomans to the re-duced number of guns. Along the way, they challenge a long held controversy concerning the light horse charge at the Nek, and evaluate the effectiveness of the fire support provided to the infantry attacks, including that at Lone Pine, the attacks on the Sari Bair Range, and at Hill 60. In doing so, the authors illuminate long-buried information to provide new and penetrating insights into the campaign at Anzac.

This is the wartime diary of 492499 Private Fred Fish, of 60th Division 2/13th London Regiment (2nd Kensingtons) and 179 Light Trench Mortar Battery. Joining the war in June 1916 at the age of 19, Fred served in three theatres of World War I - in France on the Western Front, in Greece on the Macedonian Front, and in Palestine in the Battle of Jerusalem - before being shipped home from Egypt with malaria in October 1918.Fred's daily observations, illustrated with contemporary photographs (including many of Fred) and contextualised with excerpts from the Battalion's official War Diaries, offer a window onto the experiences of an ordinary soldier in the Great War: back-breaking work punctuated with moments of poignancy, comedy and terror.
The Final War of a Great Empire"The official history of the Habsburg empire in the First World War ought to enjoy a better reputation than it does."- Sir Hew StrachanIn August 1914, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in response to the assassination of their heir to the throne, declared war against Serbia. Their army was multi-national and multi-lingual. Backed by Germany and opposed by an alliance between Russia, France, and Great Britain, the conflict would plunge the entire world into five years of brutal warfare.Started just after the Great War ended and completed only one year before the start of the Second World War, this is a comprehensive history of the final conflict of an empire that only half a century prior had been among the most powerful in Europe. With Russia never completing an official history of the Great War, and Italy, Romania, and Serbia's official histories unavailable in English, this is an invaluable and essential resource for any student of the Eastern and Italian Fronts of the First World War.This volume covers the 1914 campaign on the Eastern Front, from Austria's initial mobilization to its first engagements against Russia, Serbia, and Montenegro, culminating in the Battle of Limanowa-Lapanow.
Until recently the military record of Belfast nationalists in World War One was a part of this City's hidden history. The revised edition of this book seeks to assist the renewed and growing interest in this important part of nationalist history that lay for decades in the shaded margins of contemporary historical events.New political circumstances in our society have made it easier to address the questions of why so many young nationalist men of that time enlisted in regiments of the British Army in 1914-1915, hundreds of them in the 6th Battalion of the Connaught Rangers alone.Through researching factual historical accounts of the period, and recalling the human stories of some those who enlisted, a clearer picture of the influences, political and social, that impacted and motivated people of that time is documented.

(Raymond KUNTZMANN, Aquitaine.)- Préface, Cartes, Photos, Dessins, Notes, Gloss., Bibliogr., Index.
