"Shows historians of philosophy that Aristotle provides an elaborate account of artefacts from which we can extrapolate a new solution to the problem of artefacts' substantiality. The reconstruction of such an account also places Aristotle into communication with contemporary metaphysical debates on ordinary objects"--

The Yellow Cow is a tragic-comic humanist novel about a young man from Ireland (Eire) named Llywelyn O'Dweyer, whose purpose in life is to acquire wisdom. Living in the early years of Christianity, he can see that this religion is just a copy of many others, all much older. He knows that Christ never existed and that his story is mostly copied from the biography of the god Mithras. Llywelyn decides to discover the true history of Christianity, but he has to abandon his purpose of finding out who founded Christianity, and where it happened because Christians are destroying the entire Greco-Roman culture and murdering anyone who dares to denounce their evil plan. When Llywelyn was about to give up his quest, he had a series of dreams that showed him the answers to all his questions. The young man organizes these dreams into four stories, each with a female protagonist, including Hypatia of Alexandria, the smartest woman of classic times. The last story sheds light on Llywelyn O'Dweyer's questions, and the reader will be in for a surprise at what it says about who founded Christianity, why and where this religion came into being.
"Offering the first authoritative analysis of Galen's psychological and ethical works alongside a large number of technical tracts, both medical and philosophical, this book provides a new framework through which we can comprehend Galen's role as a practical ethicist - an aspect of his intellectual profile that has been little understood until now"--
In modern society, can people viably be generalists, who translate information, methods, and techniques from external disciplines to improve their own? This thesis considers arguments from writers in the tradition of social theory like Smith, Hegel, and Durkheim, which claim that professional specialisation is an inherent feature of modern society because of its productivity and its role in socially integrating and developing the personality of individuals. This makes generalist positions appear unviable. Against this, the thesis highlights several issues with specialisation and the arguments supporting it, most notably overspecialisation, which presents specialisation as sometimes harmful to the factors it supposedly benefits, such as productivity, personality, and social integration. A taxonomy of different modes of work is then presented, to analyse potential alternative ways for work to function in modern society. This leads to the presentation of a model of generalism which translates methods and knowledge from one specialisation into another. It is compared to other modes of work and its benefits are highlighted. The thesis concludes with recommendations for how to make this kind of generalism useful within modern society and broaches the normative implications of doing so
Profiles of Power: Philosopher-Kings, Princes, and Supermen examines the concept of ¿power¿ in the form of three iconic personifications: Platös Philosopher-king, Machiavelli¿s Prince, and Nietzsche¿s Superman. It demonstrates how these thinkers¿ response to power was determined by their investigation of the fundamental nature of humankind, the limits of human understanding, and the question of whether the universe is a rationally ordered domain or an unscripted chaos. Given the widely variant settings in which these men lived, their responses are understandably diverse. But author M.A. Soupios suggests that at least one concern unites their thoughts and purposes: that dangerous times necessitate the services of rarefied human types, and that charismatic leadership is a necessary countermeasure against the dissolute tendencies of culture and community. As Soupios argues, it is specifically in these salvational terms that the celebrated power archetypes advanced by Plato, Machiavelli, and Nietzsche must be understood.
"Offers intermediate Greek students a reliable, up-to-date introduction to Plato's most influential work. Plato's Greek is not difficult, but his ideas have generated considerable controversy. Book I serves as a dramatic introduction to them, with its memorable confrontation between Socrates and the sophist Thrasymachus over the nature of justice"--
In this book, philosopher Jean W. Rioux extends accounts of the Aristotelian philosophy of mathematics to what Thomas Aquinas was able to import from Aristotle¿s notions of pure and applied mathematics, accompanied by his own original contributions to them. Rioux sets these accounts side-by-side modern and contemporary ones, comparing their strengths and weaknesses.

This is a critical edition of a newly discovered Greek manuscript: a full commentary from Codex 199, Metochion of the Holy Sepulchre, Constantinople, entitled ¿Wisdom of Solomon¿an interpretation of Solomon¿s Book of Wisdom, by Origen, as they say¿. The book includes critical apparatus, commentary, and English translation. The Introduction acquaints readers with the text, as well as its late Byzantine context. In the manuscript both the Biblical text (quoted lemma after lemma) and the commentary are presented in full, which makes the document a valuable one for Old Testament scholars, since it contains not only the full commentary, but also the entire text of the Book of Wisdom, which at points has some interesting variations from all extant codices of the Septuagint.Intriguingly, Origen's name is on the rubric, but as author Panayiotis Tzamalikos demonstrates, the most likely author is Nikephorus Gregoras. Study of Gregoras¿ predecessors, architects of the Palaelogean Enlightenment such as George Acropolites, Theodore Metochites, and George Pachymeres, as well as Gregoras¿ contemporary John Kyparissiotes, sheds further light on how Christian and Greek thought were received and interpreted in the East. This book marks a major contribution to the field of Greek and Byzantine philosophical exegesis, and will be valuable for postgraduate classes on patristics, Biblical exegesis, and Byzantine and Greek philosophy.
