George Whitefield was a popular Calvinist circuit preacher of England and frontier America who along with John Wesley, Charles Wesley, and Jonathan Edwards was very influential in the American Great Awakening of the mid-18th century. In a brief life of fifty-seven years, Whitefield shared Jesus and the Gospel with more messages to more people than any other minister of his day. This excellent summary of his life brings the reader to a crossroads between total commitment to Jesus or a compromised life with the things of self and the world. This is not a research work, but a defense of Whitefield's ministry, which suffered unduly harsh criticism from the so-called "old lights," those Anglican and Congregational clergymen who thought the Great Awakening, and Whitefield's ministry, to be steeped in hyper-emotionalism and experience-based religious effects. In this still relevant book, J. C. Ryle goes to work defending Whitefield in terms of the substance of Whitefield's preaching, which he contends was Scriptural to the core.
"The Christian faith is a call to adventure. Be inspired by these thirty-two saints and give thanks for their faithful stories. Now go and do likewise where God has put you. For two thousand years, Christians have accomplished glorious things. Dr. Glenn Sunshine has compiled story after story of faithful men and women of the faith. These mothers and fathers of our faith laid the foundations for science. Some were Political figures who promoted Christianity in hostile societies. Several stories include opposition to racial oppression and a few heroes who helped Jews escape the holocaust"--
What are the Ashes Crying For?In Auschwitz, Treblinka, Sobibor, Majdanek, Babi Yar, Ukraine, and in many more locations, the blood of the Jewish people was either spilled or became ashes. This blood and these ashes went into the ground wherever they fell. But the soil never remains in one place; it migrates with the winds, rain, geological activity, and the passing of the years. These ashes, now mingled with the soil, have been scattered all over the world, bringing the essence of their poignant cry into your world, church, community, city, and nation. About what did the blood of Abel cry out to the creator? About what are the blood and ashes of the Jews exterminated during the Shoah (Nazi Holocaust), Russian pogroms, the Spanish Inquisition, Christian crusades, Islamic terror, and much more crying to the God of the universe? And why should it matter to you, the reader? This is what you will find out in the pages of this book.
Uses the intellectual encounter between Islam and modernity to explore the nature of culture, civilization, religion, and tradition.
"Alexandria was the epicenter of Hellenic learning in the ancient Mediterranean world, yet little is known about how Christianity emerged in the city. M. David Litwa employs the Nag Hammadi codices and early Christian writings to demonstrate how the earliest followers of Jesus navigated Jewish traditions and developed distinctive identities"--
The CAGED EAGLEInspiration for the Journey, A short story series Triumphant victory overcoming life's suffering, injustice and loss. Entrance into the new decade has been a series of solemn plateaux, encompassing deserts of confusion, and valleys of heartbreak, and loss...Yet, dichotomously of introspection, redirection as well as reconnection to what matters most in this life, God and oneself and family and friends. Excerpt of Foreword by Author The CAGED EAGLE is a message of hope and inspiration for everyone who has experienced the harmful impact of social injustice, unexpected suffering and loss. This short-story is based upon true events of an American family growing up in an era when the "Land of the Free" was crying out for Freedom. Its storyline paints a portrait of allegorical prose interplaying the life of the family's eldest son and the long-term effects of racial and social injustices with the anomaly of an Eagle the son later witnessed being kept in an open cage. The author presents a message of ultimate victory through biblical references enabling every sufferer to triumph in every aspect of life including death through the power of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in eternal life.
