This volume brings together the texts and translations for three Syriac martyr acts, set in Sasanian Persia during the reign of Shapur II (309-379 CE). Miles, bishop of Susa, was a fiery church leader and wandering holy man prior to his arrest and martyrdom in the company of the priest Abursam and deacon Sinai. The story of Zebina and his companions includes the extended interrogation and torture of two monks, Yawnan and Brikishö, who had set out to serve the others in prison. The Forty Martyrs recounts the tragically protracted story of two bishops, nine priests, sixteen deacons, six Sons of the Covenant, and seven Daughters of the Covenant, all of whom suffered unjustly at the hands of corrupt officials. These texts offer compelling witness to the challenges of a community's need to honor memory and experience. They provide evidence towards the formation and sustenance of Christian identity in the midst of Persian society and culture. Above all, each draws upon scriptural and monastic traditions to weave distinctive portraits of notable literary quality.
This book traces changing attitudes towards secrecy in eighteenth-century France, and explores the cultural origins of ideas surrounding government transparency. The idea of keeping secrets, both on the part of individuals and on the part of governments, came to be viewed with more suspicion as the century progressed. By the eve of the French Revolution, writers voicing concerns about corruption saw secrecy as part and parcel of despotism, and this shift went hand in hand with the rise of the idea of transparency. The author argues that the emphasis placed on government transparency, especially the mania for transparency that dominated the French Revolution, resulted from the surprising connections and confluence of changing attitudes towards honour, religious movements, rising nationalism, literature, and police practices. Exploring religious ideas that associated secrecy with darkness and wickedness, and proto-nationalist discourse that equated foreignness with secrecy, this book demonstrates how cultural shifts in eighteenth-century France influenced its politics. Covering the period of intense fear during the French Revolution and the paranoia of the Reign of Terror, the book highlights the complex interplay of culture and politics and provides insights into our attitudes towards secrecy today.
«This collection marks the coming of age of Irish Jewish Studies. Beautifully curated by Zuleika Rodgers and Natalie Wynn, it brings together the best of recent scholarship, covering history, politics, literature and everyday life. Taken together these essays show the complexity of both the Irish Jewish experience and responses to them.»(Tony Kushner, James Parkes Professor of Jewish/non-Jewish relations, University of Southampton)«A refreshingly nuanced exploration of perceptions and self-perceptions of Irish Jews. The authors interrogate political, religious, economic, social and cultural discourses from the eighteenth century to contemporary times to unravel less-familiar expressions of antisemitism, alongside occasional philosemitism, and offer critical insights on the many reimaginations of Christian Ireland¿s long-standing migrant Other minority.»(Guy Beiner, Sullivan Chair of Irish Studies, Boston College)Discourse, both scholarly and popular, around the Jews of Ireland has increased in recent years and this volume of essays takes up the challenge of placing it within the framework of Jewish historiography and the study of Jewish history and culture. The focus of the volume is to provide a critical re-evaluation of the study of Irish Jews looking at key areas such as Irish Jewish historiography, communal traditions, antisemitism, nationalism (Jewish and Irish) and representations in popular media. Underlying the contributions is the desire to reassess the ways in which traditional scholarship and representation of Irish Jews have been shaped by uninterrogated narratives and a lack of understanding and sensitivity to the context of Jewish history and the Jewish experience.
"Sometimes that's all it takes to save a world, you see. A new vision. A new way of thinking, appearing at just the right time." These words were spoken by a fictional character in N. K. Jemisin's 2019 utopian novella Emergency Skin. But the idea of saving the world through utopian imaginings has a deep and profound history. At this moment of rupture-with the related crises of the pandemic, racial uprisings, and climate change converging-Utopian Imaginings revisits this history to show how utopian thought and practice offer alternative paths to the future. The third book in the Humanities to the Rescue series, the volume examines both lived and imagined utopian communities from an interdisciplinary perspective. While attentive to the troubled and troubling elements of different spaces and collectives, Utopian Imaginings remains premised in hope, culminating in a series of inspiring exemplars of the utopian potential of the college classroom today.
Explores the diversity of Jewish approaches to character and virtue, from the Bible to the present day.
The Temple of our Soul is one of the most attractive spiritual texts of the late Middle Ages and early modern period. Written by an anonymous woman, who was also the author of influential The Evangelical Pearl, this masterpiece offers insights into the mystical aspects of Christianity that were widespread in Rhineland and the Low Countries. For political, socio-economic, and geographical reasons, spiritual writings from the Low Countries were highly influential in France, England, and Spain. Language barriers, however, have made the original texts inaccessible to many scholars and students. This bilingual edition offers the first English translation The Temple of our Soul together with the original Dutch text. This edition includes an introduction that provides insights into the text's key themes and the social context in which it was written. In addition to students of medieval mysticism, it will also be of interest to scholars of late medieval and early modern vernacular literature and feminist theology.

Perhaps no single institution commands the devotion of more believers than the Papacy. Many believe the Pope of Rome possesses an infallible authority instituted by the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. But, is this indeed the case? Engaging for scholars and laymen alike, The Rise and Fall of the Papacy is a groundbreaking analysis of the origin and ecclesiastical transformation of the pre-schism Church of Rome. Century by century, author Patrick Truglia combs through an array of sources spanning the entire first millennium, including the Talmud, Holy Scriptures, Oecumenical Councils, and new translations of Papal correspondence. Uncovering the jurisdictional subterfuge of the Easter Controversy, the untold story of the Church of Rome reforming Pope Stephen's sacramentology, the depositions and anathematization of Popes, and much more, one discovers the macrohistorical importance of Anastasius the Librarian. Once shrouded in mystery, this backroom actor rises from the status of laicized cleric to anti-Pope and finally to the puppet-master behind the most influential Papal chanceries of the 9th century. Due to this one man's extensive work, the Papacy was reinvented and western Christianity has never been the same since.
This book acknowledges that there is not one simple formula for forgiving. It offers no checklist to pursue freedom from bitterness or resentment. Nor does it rely on an ultimatum that God will not forgive you unless you forgive others. Instead, it encourages you to understand your own heart and the obstacles that make forgiveness difficult. Through exposition of Scripture and compelling real-life examples this Book extends God's invitation for you to come to him. Bring him your burdened heart and take his powerful and loving hand. He will compassionately journey with you on a path that you find or construct with his help. It is a Book about forgiveness, but it is also a Book about trust and grace and hope for a closer walk with God. Some of the things that this Book will teach you are how to:See what forgiveness is and is notAnalyze an offenseDiscern pettinessMake amendsRespond to persistent offensesForgive the most profound hurtsGain perspectiveConfront your offenderForgive yourself and Godand much more...
This volume examines questions concerning the construction of gender and identity in the earliest days of what is now Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Methodologically explicit, the contributions analyze textual and material sources related to these religious traditions in their cultural contexts. The sources examined are predominantly products of patriarchal elite discourses requiring innovative approaches to unveil aspects of gender otherwise hidden. This volume extends the discussion represented in the volume Gender and Second-Temple Judaism (2020) and highlights the fruitfulness of interdisciplinary research beyond anachronistic discipline distinctions.

Progressive movements have rooted themselves in the Bible as much as conservative.

The reader will gain a wealth of knowledge about the nature of God and about the way we need to relate to the people around us. By looking at how Jesus was with people, we will see in memorable ways what our purpose in this life is and how we can fulfill it.
This book illuminates important issues faced by Orthodox Judaism in the modern era by relating the life and times of Rabbi Yudel Rosenberg (1859-1935). In presenting Yudel Rosenberg's rabbinic activities, this book aims to show that Jewish Orthodoxy could serve as an agent of modernity no less than its opponents. Yudel Rosenberg's considerable literary output will demonstrate that the line between "e;secular"e; and "e;traditional"e; literature was not always sharp and distinct. Rabbi Rosenberg's kabbalistic works will shed light on the revival of kabbala study in the twentieth century. Yudel Rosenberg's career in Canada will serve as a counter-example to the often-expressed idea that Hasidism exercised no significant influence on the development of American Judaism at the turn of the twentieth century.
The Homilies of Pope Clement I are classic early Christian writings, vividly depicting the philosophical and religious discussions of the early church fathers. This lengthy and elaborate narrative is in the format of an address given in the voice of Clement I to the James the Just, the Bishop of Jerusalem in the mid-1st century. The topics range between belief in the Lord God, the nature and existence of immortality, and various religious questions and philosophic ideas. Later, we hear of Clement's activities spanning Rome, Palestine, Egypt and elsewhere, the spiritual events he officiated, and sermons he delivered to early believers.Modern theologians and scholars do not generally consider the Clementine Homilies to have been penned by Pope Clement I (c. 35 - 99 AD) himself. Instead, they are attributed to a "Pseudo-Clement" who lived sometime between the 2nd and 4th centuries A.D. Nevertheless, the works are valuable both as a manner of biographical study, and for their insight into early Christian history and culture. A multitude of references to important events which combined depict an evolution of the church from small, localized groups of adherents into an organized and cohesive whole remains of great interest.
A pioneering study of a formative chapter in Middle East intellectual history, examining the historical myth that underlies the "Canaanite" brand of Israeli nationalist anti-Zionism.
"This book analyses the so-called sacralisation of the Holy Roman Empire during the reign of Frederick Barbarossa in the twelfth century, when the Empire's most commonly known name became popular. Innovative and comprehensive, it will interest scholars of the Middle Ages, specifically those interested in art, political, and ideological history"--
If the prophets prophesied that the Son of God was to appear upon the earth, and prophesied also where on the earth and how and in what manner He should appear, and all these prophecies the Lord fulfilled, our faith in Him is well-founded, and the tradition of the preaching is true-that is, the testimony of the apostles.-IrenaeusMessianic prophecies-the Old Testament predictions of the coming of Christ-are powerful evidence that Jesus of Nazareth was, indeed, the Messiah sent by God. The Apostles used these prophecies to convince the Jewish people that Jesus was Christ. In the following centuries, Christians continued to study Old Testament prophecies of Christ. In the late second century, Irenaeus of Lyons-who had been taught by Polycarp, a disciple of the Apostle John-wrote Proof of the Apostolic Preaching, explaining how the prophets had foretold the life of Christ and the teachings of the Apostles. This new edition of Irenaeus's work is presented in a readable translation with explanatory notes and references. Reading this treasure of ancient Christianity will strengthen your confidence in the historic Christian faith.
Many people in the civilized world would agree that mankind is facing a time of enormous crisis, with a situation that is unprecedented in its history. We are experiencing not only the decline of Western civilization, but possibly the end of history as we know it. What are the causes of our plight? Many historians profess to be puzzled about the events which occurred at the end of the eighteenth century, events which must be interpreted as a discontinuity with respect to previous history, and which form the gateway to the modern era. In this book an attempt is made to explain this predicament by examining Western history with regard to its Christian aspects. The narrative runs from the 'decline and fall' of the Roman Empire to the apostasy of the modern age. Its centrepiece is the thousand years of Western history from the Carolingian Renaissance of the ninth century to the French Revolution. This millennial period is compared to the thousand years described in the Book of Revelation, otherwise known as the Christian Apocalypse, and strong parallels are drawn between actual historical events and the prophecies in this Book. If the reader accepts the validity of the thesis, the inevitable conclusion must be that Providence has indeed guided history.
