To the unstudied eye, St. Matthew's gospel can seem a terse narrative, almost a historical document and not the tremendously spiritual (and doctrinal) storehouse that it is. In his third volume of meditations on Matthew (chapters 19-25), Erasmo Leiva continues to show Matthew's prose to be not terse so much as economical--astoundingly so given its depth. The lay reader can derive great profit from reading this. Each short meditation comments on a verse or two, pointing to some facet of the text not immediately apparent, but rich with meaning. Leiva's work is scholarly but eminently approachable by the lay reader. The tone is very much of "taste and see how good the Lord is" and an invitation of "friend, come up higher!." The goal of the book is to help the reader experience the heat of the divine heart and the light of the divine Word. Leiva comments on the Greek text, demonstrating nuances in the text that defy translation. He uses numerous quotes from the Fathers and the Liturgy of the Church to demonstrate the way the Tradition has lived and read the Word of God. His theological reflection vivifies doctrine by seeking its roots in the words and actions of Jesus.

We want to love God with all our hearts, but we often find ourselves striving in our efforts to please Him, acutely aware of our weaknesses. As our failures pile up, we become frustrated and discouraged. Have we missed the essence of the gospel? Is there a simple but true way to serve God that can fill us with joy and peace rather than fear and discouragement? St. Thérèse of Lisieux faced similar struggles. As a young woman who desired to abandon herself to God, she felt daunted at the thought of climbing "the steep stairway of perfection." Thérèse searched the Scriptures until she discovered a path to freedom she called her "little way." This is "the way of spiritual childhood, the way of trust and absolute surrender." It is a recognition that while we are small and imperfect, we have a mighty God who reaches out to us with infinite love, grace, and strength to take care of all our needs. As Thérèse followed this new path, she considered herself a "little flower" in Jesus's garden. She understood that she was beloved by her heavenly Father and delightful in His eyes. And she could bloom right where He planted her as she daily demonstrated His unconditional love to others in small but meaningful acts of kindness and interceded on their behalf. This beautiful book highlights St. Thérèse's deep insights into faith and devotion, while visually capturing, through simple floral illustrations, the theme of simplicity that permeated her life. As you read excerpts from St. Thérèse's autobiography, poetry, and letters--tracing such themes as "littleness," God's immense love for us, our devotion to God, loving others, prayer, humility, surrender, sacrifice, trust, and the joys of heaven--you will learn to rest in the loving arms of your heavenly Father, allowing your own faith to grow and flourish.
Back in the first century CE, the famous Christian apostle Paul wrote a topical occasional letter, by no means a systematic theology, to Jesus-following Gentiles and Jews in Rome. Paul was concerned that they would be able to mix together graciously in community - a community that would accede to the teachings of Jesus as interpreted by Paul himself, and, in so doing, bring glory to the name of God. Since Paul's own conversion and call on the road to Damascus, he believed that he had a unique mission to bring grace to the Gentiles and see them unequivocally included in the collective of God's contemporary children. With all of Paul's experience on the journey from place to place - in successful church planting, in responding to practical theological matters, and through difficulties and opposition - he was certainly able to offer clear advice on how to live well in freedom and joy. Let us not mistake Paul's emphasis on making the message of Jesus and his grace available to all without putting roadblocks or hindrances in anyone's way! Chapter 8 of Paul's letter to the Romans covers many important themes pertaining to our faith, while chapter 12 moves such insights into areas of ethics and credible interpersonal and community living. Here we learn how to live a good life! In this commentary, there are 82 daily readings each with a brief principle to take forward. This is the third in a series of books by this author, each with daily studies on various scriptures - the others cover the Gospel of Mark from a missional perspective and the broad theme of the Kingdom of God.

Pauses - they are a part of life. You may know them by other labels: interruptions, nuisances, calamities, or even victories that force us to slow down and think about where we are going and where we have been. Many of the writers of the Psalms experienced pauses similar to yours, often on a magnitude most of us have never imagined. These struggles or celebrations are expressed in the songs they wrote and some of those psalms are peppered with invitations to stop, stay a while, and ponder their words more deeply. Those pauses are called "Selahs." Dave Cook's fascinating book, Selah - Pauses for Life: Exploring the Selahs of the Psalms, helps the reader probe these Selahs. One part biblical study, one part devotional, this illuminating, close examination of the Selahs of the Psalms brings fresh insights to readers about -- not only the book of Psalms and its authors -- but the many Selahs found in our lives as well. Dave and his wife, Wendi, have been blessed with five amazing children and nine wonderful grand-children. They served as missionaries in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, Philippines for 20 years. While there, he worked with national pastors and helped to found a three-year on-campus Bible Institute. After returning to the States, he has served as a Christian school principal and, later, as pastor of a church in upstate New York. Dave has been through numerous Selahs of his own which God has used to help him grow. Visit Dave's blog "Musings of a Follower" at www.christfollower.net.

Mission trips have included France, South Korea, Egypt, and Israel where we worshipped and ministered to those who joined our teams in churches, camps, and homes. This book Palms, Passion, and Resurrection: Holy Week According to Mark's Gospel, is designed to be a devotional resource for those seeking a deeper connection to God in the Lenten season. In each chapter, we journey with Jesus through the events of Holy Week according to the Gospel of Mark. There are many reasons for using the Gospel of Mark as the primary source for this study. It is the earliest and shortest of the four Gospels and is believed to be a source used by both Matthew and Luke. Mark's Gospel is set apart due to its portrayal of Christ as a suffering servant. Furthermore, the crucifixion is described in bloody and brutal detail.[i] Mark's Gospel moves rapidly, but then slows down during the Passion narrative, devoting six chapters to the last week of Jesus. Mark's account also chronicles Jesus' last week in the greatest detail, giving a day-by-day account. As we walk alongside Jesus during Holy Week, we bear witness to the passion story. We join the crowd's praises during Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. We witness Jesus cleansing the Temple, overturning the tables, and driving out the money changers. We listen to Jesus' teachings in the Temple as he addresses some of the religious leader's questions. We smell the oil that is poured on Jesus' head during his anointing. We sit with Jesus at the table, alongside the disciples, in the Upper Room during the Last Supper. We pray with Jesus as he agonizes in the Garden of Gethsemane where he is betrayed and arrested. We watch helplessly during Jesus' trial, crucifixion, and death on the cross. Ultimately, we celebrate Jesus' victory over death through the resurrection.
