Someone asked Anba Epiphanius what had changed in him after the abbacy. He replied: The Lord gave me the spirit of Saint Macarius: I see people sin, and it is as if I did not see them.Anba Epiphanius was like Saint Macarius: a monk and a father of monks who made simplicity his daily compass, who refused to judge others, who always considered himself 'on the way, ' showing how mercy was an expression of théosis, while living as an eschatological being in anticipation of the parousía of Christ and the life of the world to come.
Declán of Ardmore (died 5th century), was an early Irish saint of the Déisi Muman, who was remembered for having converted the Déisi in the late 5th century and for having founded the monastery of Ardmore. Like Ailbe of Emly, Ciarán of Saigir and Abbán of Moyarney, Declán is presented as a Munster saint who preceded Saint Patrick in bringing Christianity to Ireland. He was regarded as a patron saint of the Déisi of East Munster.
Saint Savva the Sanctified was born in the fifth century at Cappadocia of pious Christian parents, John and Sophia, and his father was a military commander. Journeying to Alexandria on military matters, John and Sophia left their five-year-old son Savva in the care of an uncle. When the boy was eight years old, he entered the nearby Monastery of Saint Flavian. The gifted child quickly learned to read and became an expert on the Holy Scriptures. His parents urged Saint Savva to return to the world and enter into marriage, but all in vain. When he was seventeen years old he was tonsured as a monk, and attained such perfection in fasting and prayer that God found him worthy of the gift of working miracles. After spending ten years at the Monastery of Saint Flavian, he went to Jerusalem, and from there to the Monastery of Saint Euthymios the Great (January 20). Saint Euthymios, however, sent the young man to Abba Theoktistos, the head of a nearby monastery with a strict cenobitic Rule. Saint Savva lived in obedience at this monastery until the age of thirty.

The word saint refers to all Christians, but this book focuses on Saints with a capital S-those who have been officially recognized by the Catholic Church. To be recognized as a Saint, a few things must happen. First, when a righteous person dies, witnesses provide evidence to the Catholic Church of the person's love for Jesus. The person's letters, diaries, and books are studied. If the Church believes there is evidence to prove he or she lived a holy life, the person is declared a "Servant of God." Then, as more evidence is presented, he or she becomes known as "Venerable," then "Blessed," and finally as "Saint." For clarity, anyone in this book who is in this process is noted as being "on track to become a Saint."Saints may have multiple names, dates, and locations associated with their life. These devotions use only one name to refer to each Saint, include each Saint's approximate lifespan, and mention only the locations relevant to the devotion. Locations are presented as they were known during the Saint's lifetime. A modern name of their location is included if applicable. Many, but not all, devotions are ordered by the Saints' feast days. The devotion dates that do not match the feast days are marked with an asterisk by the devotion date (e.g., January 3*).The life of each Saint inspires us to love Jesus the way that each Saint loved Him. All Saints loved Jesus with everything they had. As you read their stories, remember this: all people (including you!) are called to give Jesus everything.
