Jahrhundert hin.

How many lives can one person live? Shane Phelan has stopped counting. Big Queer Nun is a powerful narrative of trauma, addiction, and recovery, of the search for a God who loves us as we are and invites us into more than we can imagine. From her childhood in an alcoholic home, through jails and hospitals, universities and convents and churches, coming out and living in closets, this memoir traces the winding path of integration. Refusing to settle for less than abundant life, she has been drawn by hope to a place of healing. As we read, she inspires us to keep creating our lives."Shane Phelan's memoir is a love story. She seeks. She perceives hints of the Beloved in unlikely places. She finds, loses, finds again. The reader will not only enjoy a good tale, but recognize in it, the mysterious truth of love." -The Rev. Suzanne Guthrie, author, retreat leader, host of The Edge of Enclosure

«Mount Athos, for over a thousand years a centre for monasticism, has attracted pilgrims for nearly as long. This fascinating collection of essays discusses pilgrimage, the pilgrims, and the monks themselves. The Athonite ban on females has not precluded essays by women, testifying to the Holy Mountain¿s appeal, transcending geography.»(Fr Andrew Louth)Mount Athos is the chief centre of pilgrimage for Eastern Orthodox Christians. As the spiritual hub of the Orthodox world it is also home to more than two thousand monks. Each of its twenty monasteries welcomes thousands of pilgrims every year to venerate its holy icons, to make their confessions, and to listen to the wisdom of its elders. This book delves into the nature of pilgrimage, for both Western and Eastern Christians. It describes the pilgrim experience both from the standpoint of the visiting pilgrim (be it men to the Athonite monasteries or women to their daughter houses elsewhere) and from that of the receiving monk. What is it like to live the life of a monk or nun for a few precious days? And what is it like for the monks (and nuns) to receive literally thousands of pilgrims every year? And are they true pilgrims or are they really tourists? What is so special about Athos? This book will answer these questions.

The emergence of nuns as members or associates or followers of the Cistercian Order is shrouded in uncertainty. They are not mentioned in the earliest document of the White Monks, the Exordium Parvum, compiled by perhaps 1150, nor in the first codification of Cistercian statutes in 1202. Yet, by the year 1200, in France alone some one hundred nunneries claimed to be Cistercian. From the early to mid-thirteenth century there was to be a rapid growth in the number of convents, reminiscent of the speedy advance of the male houses of the Order in the previous century. By the time of the European Reformation the number of convents in Europe and the Near East claiming to be Cistercian has been variously estimated at between five and nine hundred. In this study, David Williams charts the growth of these female houses ¿ their foundation, the different physical locations of the convent sites, their buildings and possessions, the communities and their finances and their daily life ¿ incorporating a wealth of fascinating detail about many of the nuns themselves and of their royal, aristocratic and clerical patrons. It is a significant contribution to an important aspect of women's history in the mediaeval period.

In Mark 9 & 10, Jesus explains to his disciples that they must become like little children to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. How can we grow in childlike trust? We can be generous like the boy in Mark 6, whose food is the means of a miracle. We can be persistent like the mother in Mark 7 and honest about our shortcomings like the father in Mark 9; in both cases, the childlike faith of the parents prompts Jesus to heal their children. Author Sara Beth Meyer and illustrator Allison Hsu, both working mothers, perfect a format and design created in their first book, The Gospel of Matthew for Little Ones. In The Gospel of Mark for Little Ones, readers of all ages are invited to journey with Jesus from the Baptism in the Jordan to the Resurrection on Easter morning. Told in delightful rhyming stanzas and depicted in beautiful watercolor illustrations, the Gospel message comes alive and remains Good News for all to enjoy. May we grow in faith, hope and love each day, trusting in our Father at all times and following our brother Jesus all the way home.

The theme of the third conference, held on the campus of Nashotah House from June 23-25, 2022, was "From Anchorhold to Parish: English Monasticism & Anglican Spirituality." The sixteenth-century Church of England was greatly influenced by late medieval English monastic spirituality. John Bede Pauley and Bede Thomas Mudge have both shown the monastic influence, especially from the Benedictines, on the Book of Common Prayer; and scholars such as Eamon Duffy have demonstrated the continuity between late medieval devotional practices and early Anglican piety. The use of the vernacular and an emphasis on the suffering Jesus, for example, are late medieval themes that recur in early Anglican faith and practice. Thus, the 2022 conference sought to explicate how late medieval English monastic spirituality was resourced by early Anglican Christians in both their personal devotional life and in parish practice.>Dr. Ann W. Astell (Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame) Rev. Dr. Bryan D. Spinks (Bishop F. Percy Goddard Professor Emeritus of Liturgical Studies and Pastoral Theology at Yale Divinity School)
