For hvert navn er oplistet de ældste staveformer og et udvalg af yngre former, fulgt af en identifikation af de enkelte navneled og en tolkning af deres betydning.Udvælgelsen af navne som behandles, er foretaget efter principperne i de foregående bind af Danmarks Stednavne som primært har til formål at beskrive landets bebyggelsesnavne fra det gamle bondeland, dvs. fra tiden før udskiftningen. På Læsø fandt udskiftningen sted omkring 1850.Bebyggelsesnavnene omfatter navnet på det enkelte sogn og den bebyggelse som har navn efter sognet, samt navne på gårde, huse, møller og kroer som kendes fra skriftlige kilder før år 1850.Stednavnebrugen på Læsø er kompleks og navnene er – i forhold til i resten af Danmark – sent overleveret. Derfor er der benyttet yderligere kriterier for udvælgelsen af de bebyggelsesnavne som består af en præpositionsforbindelse eller et personnavn. Her er udvælgelsen for præpositions-navnenes vedkommende foretaget ud fra et forsigtighedsprincip da denne type navne oftest indgår i en personbetegnende sammenhæng hvor det ikke fremgår eksplicit at der er tale om et bebyggelsesnavn. Af disse navne er kun medtaget dem der er entydigt overleveret som bebyggelsesnavne. Når bebyggelsesnavne er identiske med personnavne, er disse kun medtaget hvis det fremgår eksplicit af overleveringen at der er tale om et bebyggelsesnavn, og at ingen ejer eller andre personer i den enkelte kilde benævnes med det pågældende navn.Afvigende kriterier foreligger ved de navne som er behandlet i kapitlet Andre navne på Læsø som hovedsageligt udgøres af naturnavne. Her findes alle naturnavne som er belagt før 1513, samt naturnavne som findes på Videnskabernes Selskabs konceptkort fra 1786, Stednavneudvalgets retskrivningslister fra 1966 og 2020 samt Trap Danmark Topografisk Atlas fra 2017.Hvor der foreligger en moderne form af navnene, er denne i almindelighed opslagsform.
