How is a changing climate affecting hurricanes, and how are these changes intersecting with our changing exposure and vulnerability in ways that affect tropical cyclone risk? Crucially, how should this understanding be incorporated into risk management practice? This book takes a cross-sectoral look at how damaging tropical cyclone characteristics are changing and presents novel approaches to integrate science with risk assessment. In this new era of tropical cyclone impacts, understanding effective risk management practice in a changing climate is more important than ever. This book details the outcomes of new research focusing on climate risk related to hurricanes in a changing climate. Topics include characteristics of tropical cyclone risk, perspectives on hurricane risk management strategies in the built environment, and implications for commercial risk. Inspired by the Symposium on Hurricane Risk in a Changing Climate, this book brings together leading international academics and researchers, and provides a source reference for both risk managers and climate scientists for research on the interface between tropical cyclones, climate, and risk.8 chapters are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

In 2018, lumps of frozen soil, collected from the bottom of the world's first deep ice core and lost for decades, reappeared in Denmark. When geologist Paul Bierman and his team first melted a piece of this unique material, they were shocked to find perfectly preserved leaves, twigs and moss. That observation led them to a startling discovery: Greenland's ice sheet had melted naturally before, about 400,000 years ago. The remote island's ice was far more fragile than scientists had realised-unstable even without human interference. In When the Ice Is Gone, Bierman traces the story of this extraordinary finding, revealing how it radically changes our understanding of the Earth and its climate. A longtime researcher in Greenland, he begins with a brief history of the island, both human and geological, explaining how over the last century scientists have learned to read the historical record in ice, deciphering when volcanoes exploded and humans started driving cars fuelled by leaded gasoline. For the origins of ice coring, Bierman brings us to Camp Century, a US military base built inside Greenland's ice sheet, where engineers first drilled through mile-thick ice and into the frozen soil beneath. Decades later, a few feet of that long-frozen earth would reveal its secrets-ancient warmth and melted ice.Changes in Greenland reverberate around the world, with ice melting high in the arctic affecting people everywhere. Bierman explores how losing Greenland's ice will catalyse devastating events if we don't change course and address climate change now.

"A passionate, provocative vision for solving our climate crisis from a young, forward-thinking conservative climate activist. Activists, politicians, and pseudo-experts have led us to believe that there are only two viable approaches to climate change: panicked doomerism or flat-out denial. Conservative climate activist Benji Backer argues that both are failing. In The Conservative Environmentalist, he proposes a new strategy for fixing the climate-while serving the American people instead of working against them. Backer makes the compelling case that conservative values are the key to climate solutions that actually work. In this book, you'll visit the country's most diverse ecosystems and consequential manufacturing hubs-from Utah coal mines and Texas oil fields to Louisiana's wetlands and Rhode Island's off-shore wind farms-witnessing the power of individual entrepreneurship and local problem-solving. You'll learn about the inspiring, under-the-radar efforts to improve Earth's ecosystems that big government Green New Dealers don't want you to know about, like partnerships between resource-rich oil and gas companies and environmental nonprofits to preserve thousands of acres of wetlands. Drawing on the most credible science, a deep understanding of local community needs, and his experience rallying politicians on the Left and Right to take action, Backer offers hope for everyone who cares about the planet and the future of America. Fascinating, clear-headed, and full of surprises, this book is the fresh approach we need to create a sustainable future for America and the world"--

Human life is not only dependent on nature but also imagining, comparing and creating things as it exists in nature. What he has found and finds in nature is rhapsodic that one reads a lot of metaphors, and similes in literature. Although human beings are blessed with intelligence and the sixth sense, whatever man sees in nature is more beautiful and powerful than what he invents or creates. Thus nature serves as a source of human imagination and invention and man cannot refrain from glorifying it in life and literature. Ancient literature has described the wild life also. But the development of science and technology has gradually shrunk the space of nature.Meadows and pastures have disappeared; forests have receded, and rivers have dried out. The waterfalls have thinned to nothing. Ponds with flowers like lotus and fishes have been swallowed. The concrete structures have conquered all these marvellous creations of nature. The hazardous chemicals have been mixed in water, water resources, and soil. It has also risen up to cause pollution in air and atmosphere in the form of fumes, smokes and gases. When it has become a threat to human life man has started talking about environmental pollution. It has its impacts in literature also. The writers have started to write about nature oriented and environment related impacts of human action. The present day literature branches out in different genres. Writers focus on ecological themes dealing with the harm done to the environment and polluting the elements of nature. These themes deal with the environmental damage caused by human beings and its impact as a reverse action in human life and all other living beings. Writers have also taken a step forward to observe the changing climatic conditions which deprive the possibilities of living in the already civilised places and regions. It has opened a new avenue of literature and criticism that alludes tochanging climate fiction and criticism and global warming. Before discussing the subject of climate and climate fiction it is necessary to study the history of climate which geologists and scientists have researched.

The monograph is based on the research and training activities in the Western Pacific Ocean Region within the umbrella of UNESCO/IOC-Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific Region. The results of these activities are compared to cases from other tropical and subtropical regions on this planet to make the knowledge applicable to global aspects of sustainability of coral reef ecosystems. In this monograph, we examine the coral reefs from viewpoint of multidisciplinary approaches, including, environmental impacts, coral biology and system ecology, biogeochemical cycles and processes that drive the material and energy flow through the food web, as well as the proxies in geochemistry that have been used to track the responses of coral reefs to the changing climate and human perturbations. Although this study is focused on the Western Pacific Ocean, the Western Pacific Ocean is so large and diverse that most reef environment types on this planet are located within it. Therefore, knowledge gained in this study is relevant to the application of coastal management in practice as well as in the teaching classes on the interactions between coral reef ecosystems with changing environments.

This book provides essential information on the role of phytonanotechnology in the removal of environmental pollutants and covers recent advances in experimental and theoretical studies on plant-derived nanoparticles. It also discusses their current and potential applications and challenges. The combination of nanotechnology and phytoremediation, which is called phytonanotechnology, have the potential to remove contaminants from the environment or degrade them. The efficiency of contaminant removal can be improved by combining both methods as they are complementary to each other.Phytonanotechnology offers the advantages of increased bioavailability, prolongation of heavy metal absorption time, and multiple metal removal, all contributing to improved efficacy and decreased toxicity in plants and surroundings. Therefore, there is immense scope for nature-derived molecules to be formulated into nanotechnology-based phytoremediation approaches targeting the specific heavy metal removal from effluents and surroundings. This encourages research initiatives to synthesize more phytonanotechnology based uptake plant systems with high efficiency. Efficient formulation targeting strategies and the evaluation of targeting efficiency of phytonanotechnology, conforming to international standards of their toxicology and biocompatibility, could pave the way for heavy metal uptake and removal by plant-based systems. This book serves as a valuable resource for postgraduate students, environmental scientists and materials scientists in academia and corporate research.

This book contains a set of papers which explore the subject matter of human and planetary health at various anglesThe year 2015 was a special year in the field of human and planetary health. In that year, the report, produced by the Rockefeller Foundation and the journal The Lancet, called "e;Safeguarding human health in the Anthropocene epoch: report of The Rockefeller Foundation-Lancet Commission  on planetary health"e; was launched. Also in 2015, the World Health Organization and the Secretariat of the Convention on  Biological Diversity published the report "e;Connecting global priorities: biodiversity and human health:  a state of knowledge review"e; with over 100 contributors, meant to guide future joint actions. Both documents comprehensively address the need for a better understanding of the connections between human health and ecosystems and the risks associated with damages to the integrity of the planet. The period in which humanity finds itself right now, the Anthropocene, is a risk one since mankind is putting the planet under considerable pressure. These elements have led to the emergence of a new field of research, namely planetary health. Planetary health seeks to address a very concrete and urgent contemporary problem, namely the need to understand, quantify, and act in order  to reverse the effects of human population growth and the acceleration of socioeconomic activities  on the environment and, inter alia, the disturbances in the Earth's natural ecosystems and how these, in turn, impact human health and well-being. Anthropic disturbances in natural ecosystems are characterized by changes in climate, land use, changes in the nitrogen and phosphorus cycle, chemical pollution of soil, water and air, reduction in the availability of drinking water, loss of biodiversity, destruction of the ozone layer, and ocean acidification, among others. In all these areas, there is a perceived need to document and promote examples of initiatives and good practice, which may change current trends. This book addresses this need. It documents experiences, case studies, and projects which explore the connections between human and planetary health and illustrates examples which show the consequences of ecosystemic disturbances to the health and well-being of humanity, with the emergence of new diseases, worsening of infectious diseases and increase in chronic non-communicable diseases related to the deterioration of the current food system, hyper-urbanization, microbial resistance, climate-led migration and zoonoses, among others.  Planetary health is a new effort to deal with the question of sustainability and human life on the planet under an increasingly integrative, transdisciplinary, and global perspective, since the problems of this planetary crisis cross geopolitical borders and academic boundaries and affect humanity as a whole. This book provides a contribution to this emerging field. Thanks to its design and the contributions by experts from various areas, it provides a welcome contribution to the literature on planetary health, and it inspires further works in this field.

As far back as the 1990's, two of our Board members, Randy Beers and Dave White, took Dave's RV to Mount Hood Meadows Ski Resort every Friday evening in the Oregon winter. They'd open a single malt scotch bottle and sit around the fire debunking everything they'd heard about global warming and, later, climate change. Randy has a degree in physics and Dave is a chemical engineer with post-graduate study in advanced statistics. Randy would say things like the warming was due to sun spots and Dave would respond with something like atmospheric carbon dioxide doesn't freeze in the atmosphere. As a result of all this collegial prognostication, in 2016 Dave launched Climate Change Truth, Inc. (cctruth.org), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit research corporation. When he realized that virtually nothing had been accomplished by controlling emissions of carbon dioxide to lower atmospheric carbon dioxide, he set about gathering all the data. His statistical analyses demonstrated conclusively that carbon dioxide emissions are not the cause of the rise in carbon dioxide levels. Then what is?Atmospheric carbon dioxide is a binary system statistically. The two causal factors are carbon dioxide emissions and loss of photosynthesis. Since carbon dioxide emissions are clearly not the cause, then there must exist a loss of photosynthesis cause and solution. This book explores the profound implications of these findings for climate change policy at every level of government. Moreover, it demonstrates the relative ease by which the climate crisis may be resolved and the important steps already underway to resolve it by collaboration with nations around the world. China, India, Pakistan, and Peru are leading the way. The solution is hiding in plain sight. The book is designed as a College textbook for sophomore students and above. Prerequisites are Statistics, Chemistry, Calculus, and General Science.

  • - En realistisk utopi der kan løse krisen
    af Ruud Koopmans
    228,95 kr.

Men hvordan?

As climate change becomes an increasingly important part of public discourse, the relationship between time in nature and history is changing. Nature can no longer be considered a slow and immobile background to human history, and the future can no longer be viewed as open and detached from the past. Times of History, Times of Nature engages with this historical shift in temporal sensibilities through a combination of detailed case studies and synthesizing efforts. Focusing on the history of knowledge, media theory, and environmental humanities, this volume explores the rich and nuanced notions of time and temporality that have emerged in response to climate change.
