This book deals with important topics of current interest, such as climate change, floods, drought, and hydrological extremes. The impact of climate change on water resources is drawing worldwide attention in these days; water resources in many countries are already stressed and climate change along with burgeoning population, rising standard of living, and increasing demand are adding to the stress. Further, river basins are becoming less resilient to climatic vagaries. Fundamental to addressing these issues is hydrological modelling which is covered in these books. Further, integrated water resources management is vital to ensure water and food security. Integral to the management is groundwater and solute transport. The books encompass tools that will be useful to mitigate the adverse consequences of natural disasters. This book is useful for those working in river and coastal engineering. River Engineering is important for fluvial hydraulics, sediment transport, morphometry, desilting, trap efficiency, silting and desilting process. Coastal engineering includes storm surge forecast, optimization of harbour, wave modelling, and shoreline changes.
A revised and updated comprehensive examination of the supervolcanic eruption of Toba in Sumatra, Indonesia over 75,000 years ago, and how it changed human genetic history by causing a population bottleneck, written by best-selling author Marie D. Jones and her father, the late geophysicist Dr. John M. Savino, Ph.D. The book describes what a supervolcano is, how they form, where they are located across the globe, and which ones may be ready to erupt. Will Yellowstone be next? Features a fictional scenario of an actual eruption at the Long Valley Caldera in California, and what happens in the days, weeks and months to follow. Are we prepared for the apocalyptic devastation known as a supervolcano?
This book presents an in-depth review of El Hierro Island, the youngest and most southwesterly volcano of the Canary Islands. In October 2011, a submarine eruption started offshore El Hierro Island. The 2011¿2012 El Hierro eruption has probably been the best monitored and studied submarine eruption to date and has sparked interest in the study of this young ocean island volcano. During the last decade, multidisciplinary investigations, e.g., on the geological and volcanological character of its past and latest onshore and offshore eruptions, the geophysical and geochemical signatures of its magmatic plumbing system structure and dynamics, as well as the bio-geophysical interactions and consequences of submarine eruptions in the ocean, have been conducted. This book provides an authoritative review of many of these scientific advances as well as multiple remaining unknowns for the study of El Hierro Island and its 2011¿2012 submarine eruption. Such knowledge should be of great interestto specialists not only in the Canary Islands volcanism but also in similar ocean island intraplate volcanoes.
This book focuses on the variety of subsequent consequences that may follow the conclusion of the immediate emergency response effort, consequences that require multi-disciplinary efforts and most likely may require a revamping of the historical interplay of national and other political authorities. The book is essentially a critique of contemporary emergency response which, in both the public perception and, unfortunately, in the mind-set of many practicing professionals emphasizes an emergency as a singular event. It is a mistaken view: an emergency is actually a sequence of multiple, singular events that unfold over time, sometimes measured in days and weeks and, most often, in months, years and decades. This book focuses on the need, in the current and recent past generation to revamp our thinking about planning for and responding comprehensively to those periodic disruptions to daily routine we call "e;emergencies"e;.

A hurricane is a powerful and destructive natural disaster characterized by intense winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges. It is a large-scale cyclonic storm that forms over warm ocean waters in tropical and subtropical regions. Hurricanes are known by different names depending on the region, such as typhoons in the western Pacific Ocean and cyclones in the Indian Ocean.Hurricanes are born from a combination of favorable atmospheric and oceanic conditions. Warm ocean waters provide the energy needed for their formation, while low wind shear and moist air in the upper atmosphere create an environment conducive to their development. As warm air rises from the ocean's surface, it creates an area of low pressure, causing surrounding air to rush in and spiral upward. This upward movement sets the stage for the birth of a hurricane. The anatomy of a hurricane consists of several key features. The eye, located at the center of the storm, is a relatively calm and clear area. Surrounding the eye is the eyewall, where the most intense winds and heaviest rainfall occur. Spiral rain bands extend outward from the eyewall, bringing additional showers and thunderstorms. The size, strength, and duration of a hurricane can vary greatly, with some reaching enormous proportions and sustaining winds exceeding 74 miles per hour (119 kilometers per hour). The impact of a hurricane can be catastrophic. The storm surge, which is a rise in sea level caused by the hurricane's strong winds and low pressure, can inundate coastal areas, causing widespread flooding and coastal erosion. The high winds associated with hurricanes can uproot trees, damage buildings, and lead to widespread power outages. Additionally, the heavy rainfall from hurricanes can trigger flash floods, landslides, and mudslides, further exacerbating the destructive effects.Preparation and response are crucial in mitigating the impact of hurricanes. Early warning systems, meteorological forecasting, and evacuation plans help to protect lives and minimize damage. Government agencies, emergency services, and relief organizations play a vital role in coordinating response efforts and providing assistance to affected communities. The frequency and intensity of hurricanes can be influenced by various factors, including climate patterns, sea surface temperatures, and atmospheric conditions. Climate change is also believed to have an impact on hurricanes, potentially leading to more intense storms and altered storm tracks.Despite the devastation they bring, hurricanes have also shaped and influenced coastal ecosystems and societies. They have contributed to the development of unique natural environments, such as barrier islands and wetlands, and have influenced cultural practices and traditions in affected regions. In conclusion, hurricanes are powerful and complex natural phenomena that pose significant risks to coastal areas. Understanding their formation, behavior, and impacts is essential for effective preparedness, response, and mitigation efforts. By promoting public awareness, investing in scientific research, and implementing resilient infrastructure, societies can strive to minimize the devastating consequences of hurricanes.

Vegetation fires are prevalent in several regions of the world, including South/ Southeast Asia (S/SEA). Fire occurrence and spread are influenced by fuel type, topography, climate, weather, and lightning, among others. In S/SEA, human-initiated fires are responsible for most of the incidents in addition to natural factors. Through biomass burning, vegetation fires can emit large quantities of greenhouse gases and air pollutants such as CO2, CO, NOx, CH4, non-methane hydrocarbons, and other chemical species, including aerosols that can affect air quality and health at both local and regional scales. Moreover, biomass burning pollutants can travel long distances and impact regional climate. Therefore, quantifying vegetation fires and their impacts is critical at different spatial scales. This book includes contributions from renowned researchers from the USA and South/ Southeast Asia on various fire-related topics. The contributions resultedfrom several international meetings and workshops organized in Asia as part of the South/ Southeast Asia Research Initiative (SARI) under the NASA Land-Cover/Land-Use Change Program. The book is divided into three sections, each containing multiple contributions: a) Mapping, Monitoring, and Modeling of Vegetation Fires, b) Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Air Pollution, and c) Air Pollution Modeling and Decision Support Systems. These sections are preceded by an introductory chapter by the editors that highlights the latest satellite-derived fire statistics and the current fire situation in S/SEA. This book will be a valuable resource for remote sensing scientists, geographers, ecologists, atmospheric, climate, environmental scientists, including policymakers, and all who wish to advance their knowledge on vegetation fires and emissions in South/Southeast Asia.

This book provides a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to addressing geohazards, with topics such as social vulnerability reduction, risk prevention, institutional preparedness, and community resilience. It also introduces new technologies to study geohazards, which is important since geohazards have caused many casualties, economic losses, and damage to cultural heritage throughout human history. Despite this, the culture of risk prevention is not yet widespread, so Disaster Risk Reduction activities must focus on increasing capacities, strategies, and action plans for prevention and preparedness in local communities.
In March 2011, people in a coastal Japanese city stood atop a seawall watching the approach of the tsunami that would kill them. They believed--naively--that the huge concrete barrier would save them. Instead, they perished, betrayed by the very thing built to protect them. Academics call it maladaptation; in simple terms, it's about solutions that backfire. Over the Seawall tells the stories behind these unintended consequences and the fixes that do more harm than good. From seawalls in coastal Japan, to reengineered waters in the Ganges River Delta, to the ribbon of water supporting both farms and cities in parched Arizona, we visit engineering marvels once deemed too smart and too big to fail. After each we better understand how complicated, grandiose schemes fail. Ultimately, we learn that if we are to adapt successfully to climate change, we must recognize that working with nature is not surrender but the only way to assure a secure future.

The conference proceedings consists of multi-disciplinary topics on the themes. As with every passing day, the climate change impacts are becoming visible, there is a dire need to understand the complex inter-relationships of climate changes, environment, water, and energy nexuses in order to lead to more sustainable solutions for our future generations. Our region is presently suffering from unprecedented heat waves, and prospective readers will be quite curious to know about the latest researches being carried out in this region with regard to environment, climate change, and water in order to reduce the disaster risks the continent is likely to face in near future.
This book introduces a comprehensive understanding in the use of space techniques in natural hazards and risk management in the MENA Region. The book is based on different case-studies from 25 MENA countries, and will be useful in highlighting the issues from all aspects. In recent years the number of natural hazard events has increased in the MENA Region. This is exacerbated by the changing climate and extreme climate events, as well as a large increase in the population in this area. Disastrous events occur on a yearly basis characterized by a vulnerability of physical processes. Floods, earthquakes, and mass movement result in severe damage to property and livelihoods, and have devastating effects upon the environment. These events cause severe financial losses, which on an annual basis, can exceed millions of dollars. The predication, assessment and monitoring approaches remain inadequate in managing these hazards and in mitigating their impacts, but with the development of space techniques and geo-information systems, these situations can now be better managed. The miscellany of satellite images, with different spatial and temporal resolutions, enable the detection of terrain features and provide indications of potential natural risks. This book will of interest to stakeholders, including field experts, academics, researchers and decision makers.

"When Manjula Martin moved from the city to the woods of Northern California, she wanted to be closer to the wilderness that she had loved as a child. ... But the landscape that Martin treasured was an ecosystem already in crisis. Wildfires fueled by climate change were growing bigger and more frequent. ... In 2020, when a dry lightning storm ignited hundreds of simultaneous wildfires across the West and kicked off the worst fire season on record, Martin ... evacuated her home in the midst of a pandemic. Both a love letter to the forests of the West and an interrogation of the colonialist practices that led to their current dilemma, [this book] follows her ... as she seeks shelter, bears witness to the devastation, and tries to better understand fire's role in the ecology of the West"--
This contributed volume analyzes flooding scenarios in Brazilian cities using a geographic and spatiotemporal approach to explore impacts and ways to mitigate future disasters.
