Humans greatest strength is our ability to adapt to our surroundings, but what if those surroundings are unhealthy? What is the conditions we are growing accustomed to are not fit for our own habitation? What if the very places we find ourselves living are making us sick? The places we shape, in turn, shape our lives. We are a product of our environment and our environment has degraded to the point of having severe consequences for our personal health. As we have experienced decline all around us, we can't help but follow suit internally. Our places dictate the people we become, the friends we will make, and our health and happiness. Food has become an obsession in our culture, yet we only eat three times a day. We are shaped by our places 24/7 and it is time we flip the table and give as much thought to the places that shape our lives as we do the ingredients we consume. Ultimately, it is the places in which we exist in that will dictate the people we will be. In understanding this, we can begin to grasp how important it is to shape those places accordingly.

This book opens up a critical dimension of energy transition taking in account multidimensional challenges on economic, social and environmental fields. The book discusses the trends in the field of energy transition and evolving practices adopted by public authorities and companies for betterment of environment and society. The editors (4) identify directions and challenges involved in the energy transition. The novelty of this book is the multidisciplinary approach, being presented the economic, social and environmental challenges involved in the energy transition. The energy transition is accompanied by a complex process of changing attitudes and behaviors of energy consumers and producers. The consequences are profound not only economically and environmentally but also socially, renewable energy being a solution for energy poverty reduction and development of rural communities. Therefore, certain social and environmental problems generated by energy poverty are solved by using renewable energy. Moreover, the complexity of the phenomenon is presented not only in terms of the analysis of the main sources of renewable energy but also the ethical aspects involved in the use of sources such as biofuels. In the case of this source, the main problem is whether the use of certain agricultural products for the production of biofuels threatens food security, especially in rural areas. All categories of stakeholders must show responsibility and get involved in this complex process which requires a remarkable technical and financial effort. The energy transition can offer innovative solutions through which the impact of economic activity on the environment is minimized, and in this way, industrial ecology achieves its objectives to support sustainable development. The demands imposed by industrial ecology must shape not only the behavior of oil and gas companies but also of entities involved in the production and consumption of renewable energy. Given the negative externalities generated, companies in the fossil fuel sector have become increasingly socially responsible, their social and environmental performance (non-financial) being presented in detail in the annual sustainability reports to inform stakeholders. Therefore, this book is an important read not only for scholars, but also for those who are interested in ensuring an environmentally sustainable future taking in account energy transition challenges.

A unique journey around the UK's National Cycle Network and one journalist's quest to investigate the state of our country's cycling. At 42, the National Cycle Network (NCN) is just a few years older than cycling journalist Laura Laker. Half of the UK population live within a mile of the 16,000+ mile-long network but many of us don't even know it exists. Post-lockdown Laura sets off around the NCN on her pink e-bike to determine the state of the nation of the country's unifying cycling network. Despite the threat of carbon emissions, our roads are still geared to drivers and it remains a challenge to navigate the UK on two wheels. What has gone right - and wrong - with this piece of national infrastructure? Why is it run by a charity whose CEO once admitted it's 'a bit crap'? Could it be because it is dependent on the mercy of landowners, councils and, in one case, a caravan park proprietor outside of Oban? Laura lifts the lid on this maddening, patchy, and at times dangerous cycle infrastructure, and the similarly precarious politics and financing that make it what it is. Along the way she includes visits to the Lakes, heads down to Cornwall via her hometown of Wiveliscombe in Somerset, travels from Bristol to Bath and along the Thames Path, and makes trips to Scotland and Wales. On her mission to pin down what the NCN is and what it means to those she meets en route, she also speaks to high-profile travelling companions, including Chris Boardman and Ned Boulting. The NCN could be our salvation, but right now it can't even save itself. Join Laura as she experiences the NCN first-hand to understand how it came to be and explores the future of our nation's cycling.

This book presents ¿An Integrated Methodological Framework for Spatial Planning and Environmental Management of Coastal Wetlands¿ to achieve sustainability. However, it represents the main parts andscientific contribution of academic research on which the author got PhD at the University of Liverpool with a high recommendation for publication. So, this book, in your hands, could be a good reference not only fortopics of wetlands, coastal areas, environmental management, and spatial planning BUT also for building novel methodological frameworks in related fields. Its novel methodology was discussed stage by stage, and supported with enough evidence, until forming the complete image. It does not stop at this point BUT its applicability was explored through a rich study of the Egyptian coastal wetlands. This research work was awarded for excellence in academic studies and participated in two international conferences: Planet Under Pressure in London in 2012; and the 2nd European Conference in Sustainabilityand Environment in Brighton in 2014. Also, this work added enough records to the author to be officially nominated for RAMSAR¿s international scientific research Prize in 2012.

This book provides a multi-scale reading of the spatial ¿elements¿ in which the extensive urbanity in Yangtze River Delta is constructed, and from there an imagination of a new paradigm of urbanization. The urbanization in Yangtze River Delta today is in need of a new interpretation and paradigm. The delta is a territory with city cores but it also has vast dispersed urbanization where the agricultural and non-agricultural activities and spaces are mixed and interlinked, a desakota (McGee, 1991). This book attempts to answer a basic question: what is the desakota in the Yangtze River Delta made of? The research Horizontal Metropolis led by Prof. Paola Viganò at EPFL, Switzerland focuses on the form of the contemporary city ¿ the fragmentary spatial condition and dispersed urbanity all over the world. The study on Yangtze River delta is part of its research frame.

Dyonelio Machado, author of the novel "Os Ratos", stands out for having broken with the structures of the gaucho literature and abandoned the myth of the hero on horseback to highlight the urban essence of the gaucho capital. The aim of the paper is to discuss the urban descriptions found in "Os Ratos", based on the method of the new Cultural History whose principles, highlight the arguments stating that the world is only perceived as representation through a structure of culturally constructed conventions, schemes and stereotypes. The real will not cease to be real, because it is exactly the fictionality that guarantees identity to social relations, configuring the real and the imaginary not as opposite things, but as indispensable complements to the form of existence of social life.Due to his sensitive vision, several intrinsic aspects of the urban environment, which are intertwined in the transformation and modernization of the city of Porto Alegre, appear in Dyonelio Machado's novel.

A deep exploration on how questions of time and its organisation affect planning practice, this book is aimed at public and private planning practitioners, national and local politicians and policy makers involved in planning, academics and students studying planning and related disciplines. It presents time as a pervasive form of power that is used to shape democratic practices, and questions 'project speed' where time to think, deliberate and plan has been squeezed. The authors demonstrate the many benefits of slow planning for the key participants, multiple interests and planning system overall.

Spatial planning is at a crossroads, with government reform undermining the traditional vision of state-employed planners making decisions about urban development in a unified public interest. Nearly half of UK planners are now employed in the private sector, with complex inter-relations between the sectors including supplying outsourced services to local authorities struggling with centrally-imposed budget cuts. Drawing on new empirical data from a major research project, 'Working in the Public Interest', this book reveals what it's like to be a UK planner in the early 21st century, and how the profession can fulfil its potential for the benefit of society and the environment.

This book seeks to provide a GIS-based analytical approach to identify food deficiency regions using physical accessibility and market location as geo-influencers. To contextualize the idea ,Tharaka constituency is used for its distinct transitional livelihood zones comprising rainfed cropping, mixed farming and marginal mixed farming which offer agro and pastoral livelihood opportunities to the village communities living in this semi-arid rural area of Kenya. A novice approach on how to identify food-deficient areas hereby referred to as ''food desert'' in the constituency is based on village to markets accessibility modeling using Geographic Information Systems. Broadly speaking, this book and its contents thereof is an essential resource for undergraduates studying economic geography, rural sociology, and community development as well as policymakers like the National Drought Management Authority, County governments and NGOs working in the line of community empowerment through food marketing initiatives.

This book offers in-depth ethnographic analyses of key informants¿ interviews on the ecological urbanism and ecosystem services (ES) of selected green infrastructure (GI) in Yoruba cities of Ile-Ife, Ibadan, Osogbo, Lagos, Abeokuta, Akure, Ondo, among others in Southwest Nigeria. It examines the Indigenous Knowledge System (IKS) demonstrated for wellbeing through home gardens by this largest ethno-linguistic group in Nigeria. This is in addition to the ES of Osun Grove UNESCO World Heritage Site, Osogbo; Biological Garden and Park, Akure; Lekki Conservation Centre, Lagos; Adekunle Fajuyi Park, Ado-Ekiti; Muri Okunola Park, Lagos; and some institutional GI including University of Ibadan Botanical Gardens, Ibadan; Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta Botanical Garden, Abeokuta; and University of Lagos Lagoon Front Resort, Lagos, Nigeria. The study draws on theoretical praxis of Western biophilic ideologies, spirit ontologies of the Global South, and largely, Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (2005) to examine eco-cultural green spaces, home gardens, and English-types of parks and gardens as archetypes of GI in Yoruba traditional urbanism, colonial and post-colonial city planning. The book provides methods of achieving a form of modernized traditionalism as means of translating the IKS into design strategies for eco-cultural cities. The strategies are framework, model, and ethnographic design algorithms that are syntheses of the lived experiences of the key informants.
