For at least two decades, major cities in Turkey have been subjected to endless waves of urban development that has left scores of building demolitions in its wake. The construction waste produced is immense but its removal or abatement is completely ignored by the state. Who will deal with all this waste? Enter the reclaimers (çkmacs), an informal network of building salvagers, who have stepped in to create a new form of assemblage that fills this gap. Erdogan Onur Ceritoglu makes an in-depth ethnographic study of the under-the-radar livelihood of the reclaimers long-term. He also focuses on incremental architecture through the reuse of second-hand building elements.

The approach to waste management in African cities is essentially curative, despite the fact that many of them, particularly Douala and Yaoundé, have the potential to guarantee sustainable urban waste management. The aim of this book is to analyse the current structure of the waste sector and to understand the informal management approach as a lever for effective waste management. In a context where the waste sector is characterised by institutional weaknesses, organisational shortcomings and a lack of funding, this book shows that it is possible to establish an intelligent waste management system by creating the National Agency for the Environment and Intelligent Development, introducing a mechanism for billing all users of the public waste service, setting up the Cameroon Federation of Eco-Recoverers, and finally designing a digital platform: e-waste, modelled on the informal model. The development of transportation policy in Los Angeles is a history of extremes: in the 1920s, the city had the largest regional rail network in the world, which was completely abolished 40 years later. In its place, a vast network of freeways was built in the metropolis with a car-focused mobility pattern. Los Angeles became a symbol of car-oriented mobility with all the negative ecological and social side effects. Since the 1990s, Los Angeles has been rebuilding its public rail transport - with little success so far.This book examines the history of Los Angeles' development and identifies the key drivers that have shaped the metropolis' extreme transport policies. With other cities facing similar - albeit less extreme - transportation issues, they can learn from how Los Angeles had responded and continues to adapt to its considerable transport policy problems, especially in order to avoid the mobility experiences faced by the American city.But, to do so, it is necessary to abandon the prevailing perspective, which is largely limited to evaluating transport modes ("road versus rail"). A sustainable solution to the problems of metropolitan areas will only be possible if the origins of transport with their spatial, social and economic interdependencies are understood and integrated into transport policy action.

City visions represent shared expectations about our urban futures. This book explores the history and evolution of city visions, placing them in the wider context of art, culture, science, foresight and urban theory.

The book discusses how division affect the fabric of cities, and people¿s sense of identity and agency, and are reflected in physical features, architecture, and urban planning. The question of divided cities represents a complex and multistranded urban Ecology¿at once both social and spatial; it cannot be limited to a single science or discipline, such as social or spatial fields. This suggests integrated and cross- disciplinary understandings, as well as integrated or parallel approaches and solutions. Urban ecologies of division manifest in multiple forms. One of their most palpable expressions is conflict, with parallels around the world, and often with correlations in the spatial fabric. Violence in such contexts is often a surface expression of deeper socio-economic or ideological differences. Whether as a result of intervention by authority or by dissent between groups, a divided city inevitably becomes a place of conflict in various forms andintensity, eroding the joy of living and sense of collective belonging to the detriment of all. In effect, it erodes the collective advantage of being part of a more unified society.A city exists in collections of social structures which mutually form a society. A divided city implies divided social structures and, in consequence, a divided society. The papers compiled in this book present many case studies of divided cities, discussing the different causes of divisions and their effects on societies. Some of the causes can be linked to conflicts, wars, colonialism, or legislative political systems. In response to the serious challenges resulting from these divisions, the book aims to provide opportunities for new approaches and possibilities for new interventions and solutions, making it significant to urban planners, architects, and policymakers.

The population growth observed in the commune of Lokossa in recent years has not always been followed by effective sanitation measures. The aim of this study is to examine rainwater and wastewater sanitation infrastructure in the commune of Lokossa in relation to population growth. The methodological approach used includes data collection, processing and analysis of the results based on the PEIR model. The results show that the rate at which hygiene and sanitation infrastructure is being installed in Lokossa is not keeping pace with population growth. The population rose from 3,4959 in 1979 to 5,460 in 1992, then to 77,065 in 2002 and 1,044,28 in 2013. The measures taken by the population to deal with this problem are purely traditional, and the authorities are making little effort to improve the situation. To remedy the situation, there needs to be real awareness among the population and the implementation of preventive and forward-looking measures by the authorities.

Our cities, and the systems that support them, have not been designed to address the FWE nexus. There exist gaps in awareness of the role and impacts of climate change. Improving communication among stakeholders with the support of scientific evidence is the key to narrowing the gaps. This book approached this issue with a multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary moveable nexus approach through the lens of FEW nexus under the project of the Sustainable Urbanization Global Initiative of Belmont Forum. It presents a collection of evidence/science-based planning decisions and participatory practices by using Tokyo as the focal area. It visualizes the stock and flow of the Food-Water-Energy (FEW) supporting the world¿s largest metropolitan area, explores how the actors have worked together to secure the resilience and sustainability of resources, and demonstrates the potential of resources in making the city adaptive to climatic and social changes. It is designed for researchers in urbanization, nexus research, urban design research, environment, disaster risk reduction, and climate change studies, and can be used as a textbook for university courses. It is also a useful tool for practitioners and policymakers in applying collective knowledge to policy and decision-making.

1960 wurde in Brasilia die Verwirklichung einer städtebaulichen Vision nach Entwürfen von Lúcio Costa und Oscar Niemeyer gefeiert, gleichzeitig wurde nach Plänen von Le Corbusier die Sektoren-Stadt Chandigarh gebaut. Der Export der Moderne, die Retorten-Stadt, entsprang einer westlichen Planungseuphorie mit utopischen Zügen. In beiden Städten ist die fremde Architektur mit den einheimischen Kulturen in Einklang gekommen und eigenständige Identitäten haben sich gebildet. Das Buchprojekt geht der Frage nach, wie in den beiden Städten die Aneignung der Moderne erfolgt ist, wie die Menschen damit leben und umgehen. Es werden Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede aufgespürt und ein Bild des urbanen Alltags gezeigt. Auf Initiative des Verlegers hat der junge Fotograf Iwan Baan eine aktuelle Bestandesaufnahme des Lebens in den beiden Städten vorgenommen.
