"At the start of the twentieth century, the first quantum revolution upset our vision of the world. New physics offered surprising realities, such as wave-particle duality, and led to major inventions: the transistor, the laser, and computer's integrated circuits. Less known is the second quantum revolution, arguably initiated in 1935 during a debate between giants Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr. This revolution is still unfolding. Its revolutionaries--including the author of this short accessible book, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Alain Aspect--explore the notion of entangled particles, able to interact at seemingly impossible distances. Aspect has investigated entangled particles since the beginning of the 1980s and has helped to show how entanglement may both upend existing technologies, like cryptography, and usher in entirely new ones, like quantum computing. Explaining this physics of the future, this work tells a story of how philosophical debates can shape new realities"--

Due to the increase in population worldwide, there is an urgent need to estimate natural hazards more efficiently. A crucial aspect of this challenging task is the mitigation of the risk of earthquakes. The occurrence of earthquakes is an inherently complex phenomenon that is manifested in the nonlinear dynamics that form the process of earthquake generation. Earthquakes interact over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales to generate new events; meanwhile, the coupling of stress interactions with other aseismic processes, such as fluid flow, poroelastic effects, and aseismic slip, may further reduce the frictional strength of faults, triggering more earthquakes. As such, earthquakes are considered a critical phenomenon, exhibiting nonlinearity, self-organized criticality, scaling, clustering, fractal/multifractal structures, and long-range interactions. The analysis of earthquake phenomena in the light of complexity theory is thus ubiquitous, and mathematical tools arising from statistical physics offer a consistent theoretical framework with which to better understand the occurrence of earthquakes. With the significant generation of new data in recent years, these modern tools may provide novel and substantial insights into the physics of earthquakes, with the ultimate aim being to mitigate the risk of earthquakes more effectively.

Tangled in Vow & Beseech vows to remember what we lose and beseeches us to embrace every moment. Throughout, McCabe Johnson writes intimately about family, nature, and animals, while also protesting the violences of religion, patriarchy, and racism. The lyricism of these poems carries the speaker into the "clear slipstream of memory" to "river me home. River me home."-Craig Santos Perez, author of from incorporated territory [åmot], winner of the National Book Award for PoetryThrough an array of poetic forms, Jill McCabe Johnson explores a deep sense of interconnectedness. These lyric tangles help us grapple with a life where the ugliest abuses of person and planet occur alongside a mother's love for her son, the grace of childhood innocence, the anniversary of a first kiss, and the understanding that "in this land" of "dogwood blossom, swordfern and fen" is "everything" we need to "believe." -Derek Sheffield, author of Not for Luck, co-editor of Cascadia Field Guide: Art, Ecology, Poetry, and Poetry Editor of Terrain.org

The origins of the Olympics date back to Ancient Greece as a festival to the god Zeus but remarkably the four year cycle established then is still integral more than 2000 years later. After setting the scene in Olympia, Joanne traces the evolution of the modern games prompted by the endeavours of a Shropshire doctor William Penny Brookes and taken on by Frenchman Baron Pierre de Coubertin. He steered the modern Olympics through their formative and rocky early editions under his famous mantra " it's not the winning but the taking part". There's the one legged gold medal gymnast, the athlete whose fame persuaded a town to change their name to his and the novice swimmer who'd never seen a full size pool till he made his debut, the Olympics never fail to surprise and enthral. With more than 100 images the book focuses on people and events, the great, the good and the bad over more than a century, revealing some unusual backstories plus many heartwarming and heartbreaking outcomes that linger long in the memory. It's little wonder as we approach Paris 2024 that the Olympics still attract even the most armchair fans worldwide.

Do you think you know the purpose of the universe, and why it exists? Do you think all of life throughout the cosmos will eventually die a cold, meaningless death? Or, do you think what we see in the "sky above" will somehow endure into eternity while you end up sitting on a heavenly cloud singing hymns into the hereafter? This short, fast paced history sets the record straight about the profound "reality" of our universe's physical and spiritual existence. But even more than that, it will challenge everything you think you know, and especially what you think you believe. Written as a novella, it is a concise account of history: past, present and future. A history that will not leave your understanding of reality the same as when you began. Frank Kacer has been a biblical worldview, political activist for almost thirty years; mentoring Christians to engage politics in a Christ-honoring, biblically balanced manner. Author of numerous columns on Biblical Politics for Christian publications and the online Washington Times "Communities," Frank is founder of the Christian Citizenship Council, the Director for Research, Content and Curriculum for Well Versed, a ministry bringing biblical principles of governance directly to government leaders, and a teaching professor at Chula Vista Christian University. Fatfoot: Encounters with a Dooligahl is a quintessential cryptozoology investigation.Neil Frost has spent decades investigating and interacting with the phenomenon of the Australian Hairy Man, developing an intriguing thesis regarding the mammalian identities behind Yowie encounters. Based on observed behavior and biology (both personal observations and those of his community network, nicknamed The Octopus), the author reasons that there are three distinct species involved, all as-yet-undescribed marsupials. Fatfoot introduces us to the Dooligahl, the aggressive Quinkan, and the monkey-like Junjudee. The author's thesis asserts that 'manlike' or 'apelike' characteristics are due to evolutionary convergence, noting that similar biological parallels are found with many other Australian marsupials and their placental lookalikes. In an eminently readable history of his growing awareness of these mystery animals, the author lays out the evidence he has obtained, discusses the issues with gathering evidence (especially at a time when technology was expensive and difficult to obtain), and builds a foundation for future investigation. As a personal record of the author's coming to terms with an inexplicable animal in his own backyard, and ongoing search for scientific answers, Fatfoot serves to inspire both zoological and indigenous anthropological research.
